TOPIC- CONFLICT AND PEACE

RESEARCH QUESTION:
DOES POVERTY CAUSE CRIME?
Poverty is a state of being extremely poor.

CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES

Some causes of poverty are rising living costs, low pay, lack of work and
inadequate social security benefits. This causes some people to not
have enough resources to accommodate their lifestyle I.e., people not
having enough money to get basic human rights e.g., food, shelter, and
clothing. Neither do they can pay for their children's school fees
(cpag.org.uk).
The social consequences of poverty include family issues, impacts on
social and cultural lives, and higher rates of crime and victimization. The
economic consequences of poverty are a lack of social mobility,
problems with housing and homelessness, and a segregated society
(study smarter Uk).

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES
According to (inside time) poverty does directly cause crime, there is a
strong correlation between poverty and criminal activity. The cost of
being unable to afford necessities, combined with the lack of
opportunity for social and economic advancement, creates a breeding
ground for criminal activity.
Additionally, the indirect links between poverty and crime, such as
structural inequality and systemic racism, contribute to the prevalence
of crime in deprived areas.
NATIONAL PERSPECTIVES
• According to (trust for London) 52% more crimes were recorded
in the most income-deprived areas in 2022. Violence, robbery,
and sexual offences are 2.1 times more prevalent in the most
income-deprived 10% of areas compared to the least income-
deprived 10%. Drugs and weapons offences are 2.3 times more
prevalent in the most income-deprived 10% of areas compared to
the least income-deprived 10%.

CAUSE OF ACTION
The government should follow what the supreme court has held; that
no person should be jailed for nonpayment of fines they simply cannot
afford (transforming the system).
They should also take all measures necessary to eliminate legislation
that criminalizes homelessness (ohchr).

PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE
Our group first thought poverty cannot lead to crime, but after writing
and researching criminalization in poverty, our group changed its
perspective to say that poverty does lead to crime. This is because of
the numbers of people causing crime when in poverty.
This research report helped us see the crimes people commit when in
poverty and we think the government must act against this.
