Grade 5 Science: Light and its properties

1. What is light?
Light is a form of energy that moves in waves and can travel
through space.
2. Which is faster light or sound? Give an example.
Light travels much faster than sound. For example: thunder and
lightning start at the same time, but we will see the lightning first.
3. How does light travel?
Light travels in straight lines
4. How is a shadow formed?
Shadows form when an object blocks light.

5. What are the colors of visible light?

The colors of visible light are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.
6. What is white light made of?
White light is made up of all the colors of light
(red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and
violet)
7. What is black color?
Black is no color because there’s no light
reflected.
8. How do we see objects?
We see things because they reflect light into our
eyes!
9. What are the sources of light?
The sources of light are of 2 types:
A. Natural sources of light:
Example: sun, moon, stars, fire, fireflies, lightening
B. Artificial sources:
Example: lamp, flashlight, glow sticks

10.What are the 3 types of media? Explain and give an example of each.
There are 3 types of media:
• Transparent medium:
o They are materials that allow nearly all
light to pass through.
o They give a clear image.
o Ex: clear glass, glass window, clear water.
• Translucent medium:
o They are materials that allow some light to pass through.
o They give a blurry image.
o Example: frosted glass, tracing paper.
• Opaque medium:
o They are materials that do not allow light to pass through.
o We can’t see through them.
o Example: wall, wood, book etc.

11.What is reflection?
The bouncing of light off an object is known as reflection.
12.What is refraction?
The bending of light as it passes at an angle from one type of matter into
another is called refraction.
13.What are lenses?
Lenses are curved transparent objects that refract light.
Most lenses are circular and are made of clear glass or plastic.

14.What are the 2 types of lenses?

❖ Convex lens:
• A convex lens is a lens that is thicker at the
center and thinner at the edges.
• Ex. Magnifying glass
• Convex lenses converge light at one point.

❖ Concave lens:
• A concave lens is a lens that is thicker at the edges
and thinner at the center.
• Concave lenses spread light waves away from a point.
