Peeta Character Analysis

Peeta Mellark is complicated character in The Hunger Games. He goes through a

lot of changes. Peeta's journey throughout the book changes who he is as a person.
He goes through different kinds of emotions, like love, fear, anger, and sadness,
giving his character strength. Peeta's courage comes from his motivations like his
love for Katniss, Rebellion against the districts and the capitol and his survival
instincts in the hunger games

Peeta works with his family at a bakery and is a talented baker. He makes unique
designs for cakes. This shows his artistic side and how his skill for designing thing
will come to use later on in the story.

At the beginning of the book Peeta and Katniss have their first experience where
Peeta sees Katniss suffering and starving so he burns some bread for her but
Peeta’s mom gets mad at Peeta for that and hits him. Peeta then gives the bread to
Katniss. This shows how Peeta cared for Katniss at the very beginning of the story
and how Peeta felt bad for Katniss.

During the reaping they both get chosen on stage as tributes and they meet each
other. Peeta interacts with Katniss on the train while on their way to the capitol but
Peeta and Katniss are kind of timid. The characters do not interact much.

When Peeta and Katniss are dressed in their fire suit they go out to their carriage
together. Peeta insists on holding Katnis’s33 hand so the people will like it.
“Come on, hold my hand the crowd will love it”. But in reality, he did it because
he has feelings of love for Katniss. In addition, the Peeta was very popular with
crowd and game makers not only because of his affection with Katniss but because
of the pride for his district which would gain him sponsors.
One-night Katniss tries to go to sleep but she can from the nervousness of the
upcoming hunger games. She ends up going to the roof and finding Peeta there.
Peeta expresses that he has no hopes of winning the hunger games or does not
think he will survive. He also talks about his fear of the capitol changing who he is
and wants to prove the hunger games will not change him to the capitol. “I just
don’t want to be another piece in their game”, he says.

That is when Katniss and Peeta start to build a deeper connection with each other
and Peeta gets to know Katniss a lot better. Finally, as The Hunger Games start to
get nearer Peeta has an interview where he talks about Katniss and reveals that he
has a crush on Katniss but Katniss did not notice him. “There’s this one girl that I
have had a crush on forever”, he says. Now that Katniss knows about how Peeta
feels about her they act different around each other.

When the actual hunger games start Peeta tries to tell Katniss to run away from the
middle which shows that Peeta cares about Katniss’s safety and will show this
throughout the rest of the hunger games. Peeta forms an alliance with one of the
most competitive and dangerous people which is strategic because they would be
targeting Peeta if he was not, they would target him. Also, Peeta does not fully
commit to killing anybody because as he said he does not want the hunger games
to change him.

Peeta later finds Katniss trying to ambush the other tributes and ends up getting a
chance to run away while all the other tributes get injured. Peeta and Katniss later
have an encounter and decide to form and new alliance together. Both Katniss and
Peeta are injured. Peeta is the one who needs the most help so Katniss uses her
medicine to heal Peeta. They end up falling in love with each other and end up
kissing. Because of how much the audience likes them they get new medicine from
there sponsors.

Peeta had an advantage because he does cake designing in his family’s bakery
which helps him in his survival skills. For example, he painted himself in the same
color and design as the grass and the rocks so he could blend In and nobody would
find him. This shows how he has strategic thinking in the hunger games and also is
willing to be patient as he was sitting in the same position for about a day.
When there are only a couple people remaining left in the hunger games Peeta and
Katniss end up going to the middle where they fight the last tributes. When it is
just Peeta and Katniss left since Peeta loves Katniss so much they both decide to
take a deadly blueberry at the same time so there will be no winner. Because of
this the crowd found it heartwarming and decided to make them both winners.

Throughout the book, Petts shows his willing to sacrifice himself to protect
Katniss. Peeta's love for Katniss is selfless and unwavering, even when faced with
the possibility of losing her. His love becomes a motivation for his decisions and
actions throughout the book. Another motivation Peeta has is how he wants to
rebel against the capitol for their unfair ways.

He becomes a proponent for people who reject the brutal Capitol rule. Peeta
actively wants to weaken the power of the Capitol and cause rebellion, once his
actions give the districts hope and unity. He expresses his feeling to Katniss about
this on the rooftop and also says how it is changing the people
Peeta is courageous because he stands up to the capitol and refuses for the hunger
games to change him like they wanted him to.

Peeta starts as a likeable character. He has shown strategic thinking and the ability to
change people's mindsets over the hunger games. He has to gain the attention of the
game makers and Peeta uses her charm and grace to impress sponsors and viewers,
basically helping Peeta survive in the arena.
