6 Absolute Tracker
1 Description of the system

1.1 System Components

Introduction This chapter describes the various parts of the Leica Geosystems Abso-
lute Tracker system, which consists of:
• Sensor Unit
• Base (Stand)
• Base Extension
• AT Controller 900
• Application Processor
The terms “Absolute Tracker” and “Laser Tracker” will be used as
synonyms for all types of the Leica Geosystems Absolute Tracker. The
term “AT Controller” is used as a synonym for the Leica AT Controller 900.

Absolute Tracker The table below shows a list of available Absolute Tracker models. It
Models provides an overview of the measurement ranges and upgrade feasibility
to T-Products.

Sensor Unit The sensor unit measures raw angles with the angle encoders and
distances with the Absolute Interferometer module (AIFM). The AIFM is a
combined module of an Interferometer (IFM), heterodyne type and an
Absolute Distance Meters (ADM). Both modules can work independently
from each other.
The laser beam sent out by the Laser module is deflected by the Tilting
Mirror to the target reflector. The laser beam of the Interferometer also
functions as collimation axis of the Laser Tracker. The reflected beam is
read by the receiver and the biaxial Position Sensing Device (PSD). The
changes in the PSD values enable the tracking capability of the Laser
Tracker.

Home Point/ Initial The Home Point on the tube of the sensor unit is used to set the initial
Distance distance of the Interferometer. The initial distance must be re-deter-
mined when the laser beam gets interrupted. This can either be done by
returning to the Home Point and setting the initial distance by the IFM or
alternatively using the Absolute Distance Meter (ADM). In this case the
initial distance is determined by the ADM.

Tracking Head The Tracking Head has two orthogonal, rotating axes. Each axis has a
direct, brushless drive DC motor and an angle encoder. During the initial
phase-in process of the motor, the Tracking Head shows some small
oscillations, especially the transit axis, this is a normal behavior during the
initialization.

Laser Status The Laser Status LED on the body of the sensor unit indicates the
following states:

Color Pattern Status

LED OFF None AT Controller power off or Laser

Red Static Laser Controller Processor (LCP)
firmware lost
Red Flashing Laser could not stabilize
Green Short flashes Laser heating up, initial phase
(Interval 1.5 sec.)
Green Medium flashes Laser heating up, second phase
(Interval 1.5 sec.)
Green Long flashes (Interval Laser heating up, final phase
1.5 sec.)
Green Static Laser stable and ready
Yellow Flashing (Interval 1.5 Laser turned off to stand-by
sec.) mode
Red/Green One short red flash Laser temperature regulation at
and green static limit. Tracker should be re-initial-
(Interval 1.5 sec.) ized.

Stand-by mode To prolong the lifetime of the HeNe laser tube, the tube’s high voltage
power supply can be switched off separately when the Laser Tracker is
not in use. During the stand-by mode the internal heating system main-
tains the stabilization temperature of the AIFM module. The Smart warm-
up process re-activates the system within a short stabilization time of
approximately 3 minutes. If the AT Controller is switched off while the
system is in stand-by mode, and switched on later again, the regular
warm-up process will engage automatically.
Refer to “Base User Interface” in emScon Reference Manual for detailed
information how to operate the stand-by mode.

AT Controller 900 The AT Controller consists of two parts, the Tracker Processor (TP) and
the Tracker Server. The Tracker Server hosts the emScon system and
interfaces to the Tracker Processor.
Refer to “emScon Basics” in emScon Reference Manual for detailed infor-
mation about the Tracker Server and emScon system.
The Tracker Processor consists of the following components:
• Power supply
• Two motor amplifiers
• Dual channel encoder interpolation
• CPU board (Tracker Processor), incl. Flash disc, which calculates the
servo loop to apply corrections to the angle and distance values
measured by the encoders and AIFM module.
• A/D board, which digitizes data from the photo sensor (PSD).

Absolute Tracker 9
• Multi functional board with interferometer count, D/A output for
motor amplifiers, filters for PSD signals and power supply for analog
circuits.
• Trigger and synchronization board, which allows to take or send clock
signals and trigger events.
The Tracker Server consists of the following components:
• emScon CPU board in the Tracker Server part with a Windows oper-
ating system.
• Hard drive to store the operating system, emScon system and the
Laser Tracker compensation files.
• Different interfaces (USB port, COM port, parallel port, monitor port,
combined mouse and keyboard port, BNC video output)
• Ethernet type network board (LAN) for data exchange with the Appli-
cation Processor (AP)
• CD-ROM drive for emScon recovery CD.

Firmware The AT Controller firmware (hardware control software) running on the

Tracker Processor fulfills two main functions. Firstly to direct the laser
beam to the target, the firmware uses interrupt control to calculate the
servo loop (3000/sec.) and records the PSD-, encoder- and interfero-
meter values simultaneously. Secondly the firmware handles commands
sent by the emScon server or Application Processor. For example during
data acquisition the raw values of the horizontal and vertical encoders,
the interferometer count and the X and Y values of the PSD are trans-
formed into a single distance and two angles. An offset is added to the
interferometer count, the PSD offset is used to reduce the angle readings
to the reflector center. Further corrections like product compensation
parameters or atmospheric corrections will be applied before passing the
measurement values (distance and two angles) to the Application
Processor.
In case of using T-Products both task are extended to control all addi-
tional functions and steer the complete measurement process. The firm-
ware also includes the internal system synchronization and all additional
calculations to provide the complete 6DOF information.

Compatibility The AT Controller is compatible with all Absolute Tracker models. The
series types of Leica LT(D)600/700/800 or Leica LT(D)640/706,709,840
Laser Trackers are compatible to the AT Controller for 3D measurements
only, usage of T-Products is not supported.

12 Absolute Tracker
Tracker Server The Tracker Server part is a Windows based environment and contains the
embedded system control software (emScon).
Refer to “emScon Basics” in emScon Reference Manual for detailed infor-
mation about the Tracker Server and emScon system.

Application An application processor which runs the actual application software is

Processor (AP) required to operate the Absolute Tracker. The emScon Tracker Program-
ming Interface (TPI) provides an open and flexible interface to third-party
application programs, i.e. Metrolog XG for Leica, PC-DMIS etc.
The use of an Application Processor distributes the workload such as:
• The firmware (hardware control software) runs on the AT Controller
Processor, the emScon software acts as server software on the
Tracker Server and the application software runs on the Application
Processor. The resources of the Application processor are fully avail-
able for data acquisition, handling, calculation and graphical display to
support all user needs. The hardware requirements for the Applica-
tion Processor depend on the specifications of the supplier of the
application software.
• The interface between the embedded software and the application
software is clearly defined, making it easier to maintain both,
embedded and application software.

1.2 Accuracy
The accuracy of measurements with the Absolute Tracker depends on the
individual accuracy of the following components:
• Angle measurements
• Distance measurements
• Reflectors
The distance measurement module is an Absolute Interferometer (AIFM),
which combines the functionality of an Absolute Distance Meter (ADM)
and of an Interferometer in one module. The AIFM module enables a fast
and accurate lock-on process with the ADM. Both modules can still
operate independently and will be treated separately in the following
annotations.

1.2.1 Maximum Permissible Error (MPE)

Accuracy specifications in the technical data of this manual are stated by

means of the Maximum Permissible Error (MPE). The Automotive Society
of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) defines Maximum Permissible Error (MPE)
as the "extreme values of an error permitted by specification, regulations,
etc. ... for a given instrument".
The ASME B89.4.19-2006 standard further expands this definition by
specifying that if during testing a corresponding measurement fails to
meet the MPE requirements, then the failed measurement is allowed to
be re-measured 5 times, with the magnitude of the largets error replacing
the failed position value. If the new value fails to satisfy the MPE require-

Absolute Tracker 13
ment, then the test is allowed to be done a second time (but not more
than twice) with a failed result leading to a failed inspection test.
Typical measurement results of the Absolute Tracker are half of the rele-
vant MPE values.

1.2.2 Angle Measurement

The angular accuracy is a major factor of the overall accuracy of a Laser

Tracker. The Absolute Tracker uses incremental angle encoders for
angular measurements.
Resolution The encoders have glass discs with 18000 radial lines, which are photo-
electrically scanned. The angular resolution is 0.14 arc sec.

Position Sensing During dynamic measurements, the offset of the laser beam on the Posi-
Device (PSD) tion Sensing Device (PSD) increases as the target moves faster or accel-
erates. Dynamic measurements require corrections to the angle readings
using PSD values.

Dynamic Measure- The accuracy of Laser Tracker measurements improves with static targets.
ments
Atmospheric Fluc- Averaging measurements of a static target over a certain time period
tuations minimizes the influence of atmospheric fluctuation. The specified accu-
racy is achieved by averaging ! 100 measurements over 5 seconds.
Refer to "7 Technical Data" for detailed specifications of the product.

1.2.3 Laser Interferometer

General The Interferometer module of the AIFM has the following properties:
• Wavelength of 633 nm
• Resolution of 0.32 Pm
• Stabilized (by hard- and software) wavelength of r 0.5 ppm

Atmospheric Influ- The accuracy of the measured distance is primarily dependent on the
ence accuracy of the determination of:
• The ambient air temperature
• The air pressure
A change or deviation in the atmospheric parameters affects the distance
measurement accuracy as follows:
• r 1°C results in a change in distance of approx. 1 ppm.
• r 4 hPa result in a change in distance of approx. 1 ppm.

Home Point The absolute distance accuracy is also influenced by the accuracy of the
Distance determination of the initial distance of the Interferometer. The initial
distance is generally set to the Home Point on the Laser Tracker tube. A
proper determination of the Home Point distance (IFM Distance) can
ensure an absolute distance accuracy of less than 10 Pm.
Refer to “Full Compensation 3D” of the emScon Reference Manual for
details on the compensation of IFM Distance.
14 Absolute Tracker
 Caution The Home Point is not designed to carry the Cateye reflector.
Precautions:
The Cateye reflector can only be used with the ADM, a Home Point
distance cannot be determined for this type of reflector.

1.2.4 Absolute Distance Meter

Working Principle The Absolute Distance Meter module of the AIFM uses a modularized and
polarized laser beam which operates according to Fizeau’s principle. The
periodic pulse is superimposed on the laser beam by an external modu-
lator. The laser beam passes through an electro-optical crystal, where the
linear polarized beam propagates with different velocities, depending on
the position relative to the optical axes (different refractive indices). The
refractive indices are varied in the crystal periodically by applying an alter-
nating voltage, which causes a continuous change in the elliptical polar-
ization. The modulated frequencies, which create complete waves, repre-
sent the current distance being measured.

Resolution The Absolute Distance Meter has a resolution of 0.1 Pm.

Atmospheric Influ- Air temperature and air pressure have a similar influence on the Absolute
ence Distance Meter as on the Interferometer.

Additive Constant For an absolute distance measurement the following values must be
known:
• An additive constant (ADM Instrument parameter).
• The distance between the tilting mirror and the ADM module of the
sensor unit.
• A scale factor.
In combination with the Interferometer, these parameters can be quickly
and easily determined.

Reflector Constant Glass prism reflectors like Cateye or Tooling Ball (TBR) have an internal
reflector constant, which cause an apparent increase in the distance
measurement. This reflector constant is indicated on the accompanying
Producer Certificate. The constant can also be determined by comparison
to interferometer measurements, after the additive constant (ADM
Instrument parameter) has been determined.
Refer to “Full Compensation 3D” of the emScon Reference Manual for
details on the compensation of ADM parameters.

1.2.5 PowerLock

Working Principle By utilizing an active vision system built into the sensor the Leica Absolute
Tracker can determine where a target is without the need for the laser
beam to be locked on and without operator intervention. This revolu-
tionary vision system works with all standard reflectors and all Leica T-
Products and can lock onto the target as soon as it is within view of the
sensor,

Absolute Tracker 15
Field of View The field of view of the Power Lock vision system is 3.0°, which corre-
sponds to a size of 525 x 525 mm at a distance of 10 meters.

Identification PowerLock ready Absolute Trackers can be identified by the "PowerLock"

logo on the tracker head near the cover glass.

1.2.6 Reflector

Hollow corner cube reflectors (RRR and BRR) and glass prisms (Cateye
and TBR) are available with the following tolerances:

Spherity Value
Red Ring Reflector (RRR) r 1.5 μm
Break Resistant Reflector (BRR) r 1.5 μm

) If repeatability of measurements is important, for example the determi-

nation of the Home Point distance, the reflector should always be used

16 Absolute Tracker
with the same orientation. The serial number and Leica logo on the
reflector housing helps to maintain the orientation.

 Caution The Home Point is not designed to carry the Cateye reflector.
Precautions:
The Cateye reflector can only be used with the ADM, a Home Point
distance cannot be determined for this type of reflector.

Absolute Tracker 17
1.2.7 Measurement uncertainty

The measurement uncertainty of a coordinate “Uxyz” is defined as the

deviation between a measured coordinate and the nominal coordinate of
the measured point. This measurement uncertainty is specified as a func-
tion of the distance between the Laser Tracker and the measured point.
The accuracy specified below is achieved with Leica precisions reflectors
and a measurement mode of 1 second per point under stable environ-
mental conditions.

Volume Uncertainty
Uxyz, 0-40 m Range r 15 μm + 6 μm/m
(Full Range Definition: 360° horizontally, r 45°
vertically and up to the maximum distance
range of the sensor)
Uxyz, in 2.5 m x 5 m x 10 m Volume r 10 μm + 5 μm/m
(Prerequisite: The Laser Tracker sensor is
located anywhere inside the defined volume)

2.1 Overview Camera

General The monochrome Overview Camera enables tracing of reflectors. The
camera mounts on top of the Tracking Head, the focus and aperture are
fixed.
The Overview Camera can be used:
• To visually recognize reflectors and to target the laser beam.
• As an intermitting, infrared illumination source. This intermitting illu-
mination is reflected by the reflector and can be seen in the Find
Reflector window.

technical data and installation of the Overview Camera.
Refer to “emScon User Manual” for detailed information on using the
Overview Camera.

2.2 AT MeteoStation
General The air temperature, air pressure and humidity affect the refraction index
of the air, which causes a change in velocity of propagation and wave-
length of the laser beam. These changes influence the values of distance
measurements.
The AT MeteoStation provides environmental information on air temper-
ature, air pressure and humidity, which is used to calculate the current
refraction index of the surrounding atmosphere. The AT Meteo Station
reads the information from an internal probe, optionally two additional
external temperature sensors can be connected, one for the ambient air
temperature and one for the object temperature.

gravity and/or monitor the stability during the measurement process.
Refer to “NIVEL230 for Absolute Tracker User Manual” for further details.

2.4 Reflectors
Reflector Types Leica Geosystems recommends using the following types of reflectors:
• Hollow corner cube (air path) reflector (Red Ring Reflector (RRR),
Break Resistant Reflector (BRR)), consisting of three orthogonal
mirrors. The mirrors are centered in a metal sphere and their reflec-
tive surfaces have a optimized coating.

1) Housing
2) Reflective surfaces
• Small size glass prism (Tooling Ball Reflector (TBR)). For a small size
glass prism, the influence of refraction for small entry angles (r 15°)
22 Absolute Tracker
can be neglected. Glass prism reflectors are recommended for static
points, where it can be pointed towards the sensor unit during the
actual measurement. To impede measurements with large entry
angles of the laser beam, a collar can be mounted on the aperture of
the TBR.

Housing Most reflectors are housed in a metal ball (Spherically mounted reflector
= SMR), with the advantage of a constant offset when measuring
surfaces. A three-point reflector support ensures reliable centering of the
sphere.

Absolute Tracker 23
Reflector Support A reflector support is used, when the reflector needs to be fixed in a
particular stable position. A magnet in the reflector support holds the
reflector in the same position. Various kinds of reflector supports are
available.
Refer to the brochure “Leica Metrology Accessories Catalog” for detailed
information.

Damaged Reflec- A dropped reflector may be damaged, which will affect the measuring
tors accuracy (trueness of the optics and centering). Damages may not be
immediately apparent. Dropped reflectors should be sent to your autho-
rized Leica Geosystems representative for inspection.

 Caution Reflector can cause personal injury and/or mechanical damage, when
dropped.
Precautions:
Secure the reflector with a lanyard when moving the reflector.

2.5 Scale Bar

General The Invar Scale Bar, issued with a Producer Certificate, is used as part of
the field check process to ensure the Laser Tracker fulfills the specifica-
tions. A label on the scale bar states the calibrated length, the expansion
coefficient and the calibration temperature.
Refer to “Scale Bar Check” of the emScon Reference Manual for details of
the Field Check process using the Scale Bar.

24 Absolute Tracker
2.6 Ball Bar
General The Ball Bar is used to determine the behavior of the Laser Tracker during
dynamic measurements. Systematic parameters are determined and
accounted in the Field Check/Compensation process.
The rotating arm has a bracket on one end to hold a reflector support for
a 1.5" RRR reflector. The other end has a counterweight on a telescopic
extension, the length can be adjusted to balance the Ball Bar when
reflector support and reflector are attached.
A DC-motor powered by 9V-battery rotates the Ball Bar. The rotational
speed of the Ball Bar can be adjusted by a potentiometer.
The Ball Bar with motor can be mounted on a tripod (i.e. AT21 or AT28)
with an adapter.

Absolute Tracker system. All components, apart from the Laser Tracker
itself, can be installed or stored inside the cart. The Laser Tracker can be
lifted onto rails on the side of the cart.
The cart has drawers to store reflectors and smaller accessories and a
provision for a power panel.
A rack enables the installation of an Application Computer, the AT
Controller, an UPS-module and T-Scan Controllers.

Absolute Tracker 25
2.8 Versatile Mount
The Versatile Mount allows to mount the Absolute Tracker in vertical, hori-
zontal position or intermediate tilt steps of 20°. This provides additional
versatility in the measurement volume. Typical measurement results in
horizontal setup are within specifications. It is recommended to perform
a full compensation of the Absolute Tracker in the horizontal position.

4 Check & Adjust
General Leica Geosystems products are manufactured, assembled and adjusted to
the best possible quality. Quick temperature changes, frequent move-
ments of the product, shock or stress can cause deviations and decrease
the measurement accuracy.
It is therefore recommended to check and adjust (compensate) the
product from time to time. This can be done onsite by running through
specific field check or compensation measurements. If field checks do not
provide satisfying results repeatedly, a full compensation of the product
is recommended.
The following product parameters can be checked and adjusted electron-
ically to a product specific parameter file:
• Vertical Index Error and Transit Axis Tilt (j)
• Mirror Tilt (c)
• Beam Tilt (Ix, Iy)
• Transit Axis Offset (e)
• Mirror Offset (f)
• Beam Offset (Ox, Oy)
• Cover Glass Offset (O2x, O2Y)
• Horizontal Encoder Eccentricity (Ex, Ey)
• Vertical Encoder Eccentricity (Kx, Ky)
Please refer to “Tracker Compensation” or “Tracker Field Check” in the
emScon Reference Manual for details on the Field Check and Compensa-
tion process.

Measurement To achieve precise measurement results in the daily work, it is important

Precision to check and adjust (compensate) the product from time to time. During
the manufacturing process the product parameters are carefully deter-
mined.
As mentioned above, these values can change and it is highly recom-
mended to check or adjust the product in the following situations:
• Before the first use of the product
• Before taking high precision measurements
• After long transportations
• After long working periods
• After long storage periods
• In a high or low temperature environment

) Before starting to work the product has to become acclimatized the

ambient temperature, especially if the product has been stored under
different temperature conditions. Ensure sufficient acclimatization to the
environment before taking precision measurements.

Laser Classification Class 2 Laser Product in accordance with IEC 60825-1, Second Edition
(2007-03)
Complies with 21 CFR 1040.11, except for deviations pursuant to Laser
Notice No. 50, dated July 26, 2001.
When emitting alone IFM and ADM are a Class 1 laser product. When they
emit simultaneously however the sum of the ratios of the emitted laser
radiation to the AELs of the corresponding wavelengths exceeds unity for
Class 1. Therefore the AELs are determined with the time base for Class
2 (0.25s) because IFM is a visible laser. Each of them is still Class 1 but In
this case the sum of the ratios of the emitted laser radiation to the AELs
of the corresponding wavelengths is less than unity for Class 2 and the
Laser Tracker with both IFM and ADM emitting simultaneously is a laser
Class 2 laser product.
