SFU13 Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)
Single Fiber Unit

Introduction
The SFU13, Fig. 1.1, is installed at the Optical Network Unit (ONU) for
transport of ISDN Basic Rate Access service (2B+D) through the system. The
SFU13A channel unit can be used in 12-channel ONU applications, but if used
in a12/24-channel ONU, the SFU13 must be at the B revision level, SFU13B,
or later.

ISDN transport over the system uses Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
technology. The DSL signal consists of 144kB/s of bidirectional data (2B+D),
4kB/s of overhead in support of network operations, and 12kB/s for framing
and timing functions. Using 2B1Q line coding, the DSL line rate is 80kHz. The
DSL transceiver incorporates a hybrid with an echo canceller to achieve
bidirectional signal transmission.

363-252-722, Issue 7 Applications

The SFU13 can be configured as a Line Unit Loop Termination (LULT). In the
LULT mode, the SFU13 connects to subscriber ISDN-compatible equipment.
Depending on the service option selected, the SFU13 could require one, two, or
three timeslots.

Applications
A common timing source must be used by the switch and transmission
equipment so that synchronization exists throughout the ISDN circuit. The
composite clock (64kHz) must be used to time the transmission equipment.

The SFU13 channel unit can be used in the Universal and Integrated Network
Access (INA) modes only. 3DS-0 ISDN service cannot be integrated.
Provisioning configurations involving INA DS-1s with fixed digroup
assignments are not supported unless the INA DS-1s are in Special Services
shelf digroup assignments.

Note: Manual provisioning of the SFU13 is recommended in all

cases. Automatic provisioning of this channel unit should be avoided.

Installation
SFU13 installation procedures are presented in this section. There are several
restrictions on the installation of the SFU13.

Definitions
If the SFU13 is provisioned for 2B+D service, three timeslots are required.

Channels

The term channel describes bandwidth used in the ONU channel shelf.

A channel is referred to either as a shelf-slot such as 1-1, 2-3, or 7-96, or as a

pair gain cable address such as PG99, 1, or EPG5301A, 23. Pair gain cables
are denoted as F1 for the COT, INA, and F2 for the ONU.

Timeslots

The term timeslot refers to the DS-0 contained in the feeder DS-1. Timeslots
are always referred to as riding on a DS-1.

Channel Unit Positions 363-252-722, Issue 7

Channel Unit Positions

Timeslot Position Descriptions

Provisioning ISDN channel units, especially when using the Timeslot
Interchanger (TSI), varies as to whether the channel unit is in the Right or
Left slot position.

A Left position channel unit has access to both channels associated with its
physical slot. A channel turned up as 2B+D without another ISDN card in the
slot to the immediate left is always a Left position. A channel unit positioned
in a DISC★S Fiber-In-The-Loop (FITL) 12/24-channel ONU is always
considered to be a Left position.

For example, consider a dual-mode, 12-channel ONU with channels 1-1, 1-3,
and 1-5 to be provisioned as 1B+D service. Since all three ISDN channel units
require only two channels, all the channel units are using channels that are
associated with its physical slot. Therefore, all three units in this situation are
Left channels.

As another example, consider the same ONU with channels 1-1 and 1-3 both
to be provisioned for 2B+D service. Since channel 1-1 is located to the left of
channel 1-3, and channel 1-1 uses 2B+D service, channel 1-3 is the Right
channel. Channel 1-1 requires both timeslots and does not have a channel to
its left which uses 2B+D service, then channel 1-1 is therefore a Left channel.

For another example, consider a quad-mode, 12/24-channel ONU provisioned

for 12 DS-0s. This ONU allows four channels of service for each of the first
three slots on the ONU, numbered 1-1,1-5, and 1-9. Since each physical slot
has enough timeslots to support 2B+D, all three channels are considered Left
channels. The same holds for a 12/24-channel ONU provisioned for 24 DS-0s.

Channel Allocation
Whether the Left or Right slot is used determines which channels the ISDN
card uses out of the distribution bandwidth.

Three channels can be used by the ISDN channel unit, one representing the
cable pair used to carry the ISDN circuit, and the other two representing dead
pairs whose distribution bandwidth is used by the ISDN circuit to provide
more than one timeslot.

363-252-722, Issue 7 Channel Availability

The three possible channels used by the SFU13 are termed the primary,
secondary, and third channels. Each channel has a specific function depending
on the service option for the channel unit. Table 1.A shows the distribution
bandwidth allocation.

Table 1.A: Channel Allocation by Virtual Position

Slot Position Primary Channel Secondary Channel Third Channel

An example of how Table 1.A is used is that a Left channel in slot 1-1 would
use 1-1 as its primary channel, 1-2 as its secondary channel, and 1-4 as its
third channel.

Channel Availability
Table 1.B shows how each channel that is allocated according to the rules in
Table 1.A is used for a particular ISDN function.

Channel Grouping 363-252-722, Issue 7

If one or more of the primary, secondary, or third channels is not available for
the SFU13 during a provisioning process, one of two things happens:

• From a menu interface, an error message is displayed stating that one of

the three channels is not available. Table 1.A can then be used determine
the exact channel in question.
• Provisioning menus can be accessed to delete provisioning or to assign
timeslots as necessary for proper operation of the channel unit.

Channel Grouping
2B+D Service

The following rules and restrictions apply to channel slot provisioning and
installation for the SFU13 configured for 2B+D service. 2B+D service is
provisioned through the SS or Narrowband EMS. These rules and restrictions
are valid only for a dual-mode, 12-channel ONU. For both quad-mode
12-channel and quad-mode 12/24-channel ONUs, there are no restrictions.

• A Dual Channel Unit (DCU) must not be placed to the adjacent right of an
SFU13 configured 2B+D. Only SFU3 or SFU4 channel units can be used
adjacent to an SFU13 channel unit configured as 2B+D.
• SFU13s in side-by-side operation must be inserted from left to right. An
SFU13 should not be inserted to the adjacent left of a provisioned SFU13.
• If two SFU13 channel units configured for 2B+D are placed in adjacent
channel slots, the adjoining channel slot to the immediate right of the
second SFU must remain vacant.
• An SFU13 cannot be inserted in a channel slot that has been
user-provisioned for a different type of channel unit.

2B or B+D Service

An SFU13 configured for either 2B or B+D service requires only two channels
and allows side-by-side provisioning and installation throughout the shelf.
Channel services must be entered at the SS or Narrowband EMS TUI.

Restrictions
If an SFU13 is used in a dual-mode, 12-channel ONU, and if the card is placed
in the last slot of the ONU, then it cannot be used for 2B+D operation.

In a 12/24-channel ONU, all slots can be used for 2B+D service in all cases.
There are no restrictions.

In a 12-channel ONU, if a channel unit in the Left position is configured as

2B+D operation, but no other SFU13 is provisioned to the immediate right,
the slot to the immediate right can contain only an SFU3 or SFU4 card if slot
is not vacant. In all cases, all 2B+D ISDN channel unit left of non-ISDN
channel unit must be provisioned first.

August 2004 SFU13 Description, Application, and Installation
363-252-722, Issue 7 Restrictions

In a dual-mode, 12-channel ONU, an SFU13 configured as 2B+D must not be

placed in channel slot 11/12 at the ONU. See Fig. 1.3. If the 12/24-channel
ONU is used and was configured for the 12-channel mode, then the SFU13
cannot be installed in the three bottom slots of the ONU because no service is
provided on those slots.

service, an SFU13 configured as 2B+D in an AB-CD digroup arrangement
must not be placed in channel slots 9/10 or 11/12 at the ONU. Refer to Fig. 1.4.

static charge on the SFU13 and the channel shelf, establish a body path to
ground using a ESD wrist strap connected to the ESD ground jack of the
Common Shelf. If storing or shipping the SFU13 becomes necessary, place
the SFU13 in a conductive shipping container or wrap it in aluminum foil to
prevent static buildup.

ALERT! When unplugging an external cable from any installed circuit pack,
hold the circuit pack in place while removing the cable.

The SFU13 is installed in the non-DISC★S MX ONU channel shelf. Use the
following procedure to install the SFU13.

Note: Manual provisioning should be performed before installing

the SFU13 channel unit. Automatic provisioning of the SFU13 should
be avoided.

1. Verify correct card received for installation. Contact your next level of su-
pervision if card received is incorrect or damaged.
2. Wear an approved ESD wrist strap properly connected to the ESD ground
connection on the lower right front of the common shelf.

ALERT! Channel units are susceptible to damage from ESD. To prevent

static discharge damage, use an ESD wrist strap. An ESD ground
connection is provided on the lower right front of the common shelf.

For first-time installation, go to Step 5. If installation is due to a failed

SFU13, continue with Step 3.
3. Remove the desired SFU13 from the channel shelf.

ALERT! When removing a channel unit, be sure that it does not touch
components on an adjacent unit.

4. Pack the SFU13 in an appropriate ESD-safe container.

5. Remove new SFU13 from shipping container.

ALERT! Channel units are susceptible to damage from ESD. To prevent

static discharge damage, use an ESD wrist strap. An ESD ground
connection is provided on the lower right front of the common shelf.

6. Inspect contacts on new SFU13. Contacts are located on connector and

back edge of card. Contacts should be clean and free from damage.
7. Place latch on SFU13 in open position and insert SFU13 into the slot.
While holding faceplate, position card onto guides and slide card into slot
until firmly seated.

8. Position latch on SFU13 in closed position. Verify that card is firmly in

place before closing latch.
9. Update office records. SFU13 installation procedure complete.

Audible and Visual Indicators

When the SFU13 is installed, both the alarm and loopback LEDs shown in
Fig. 1.1 illuminate for approximately one second and then the loopback LED
extinguishes. Should both LEDs remain illuminated, the channel unit is
defective and must be replaced. However, the unit might not be defective if it
is in an alarm state and a loopback or test is being performed on the unit.

If the system detects an error after the SFU13 is provisioned, an audible

alarm sounds and a CU LED lights on the Alarm Unit of the RDT Fuse and
Alarm Panel, indicating a provisioning mismatch only. If the Loopback LED
illuminates, the channel unit has been placed in a test access or loopback
mode.

The Alarm LED lights when trouble is detected on the U-interface. The Alarm
LED also lights when the far-end ISDN card cannot be detected.

Outside Plant Engineering

DSL technology operates over any loop plant using resistance design rules.
The maximum loop length for the SFU13 is 1300W or 42dB at 80kHz.

Provisioning
Provisioning consists of setting the SFU13 options to the desired function(s)
using the Supervisory System (SS) or Narrowband EMS TUI. This section
provides detailed provisioning information for ISDN service over the system.
Two channel units are used to provide ISDN service, the SFU13 at the COT
and the SFU13 in a non-DISC★S MX ONU. The SFU13 is used only in the
FITL system non-DISC★S MX ONU.

Overview
Provisioning Options

The SFU13 has five user-selectable options:

• Card Mode
• Channel Service
• Sealing Current
• Zero-Byte Substitution
• Enable Multi-Point Embedded Operations Channel (MP-EOC)

Card Mode Option

The Card Mode option is set for Line Unit Line Termination (LULT). LULT is
the default setting for RDT operation and is always used with an SFU13.

Channel Service Option

The Channel Service option allows the SFU13 to be provisioned for 2B+D,
B1+D, B2+D, 2B, B1, B2, or D-only operation. The default setting is 2B+D,
which serves most common applications. The 2B+D setting requires three
timeslots; the B1+D, B2+D, and 2B settings require only two timeslots; and
the B1, B2, and D settings require only one timeslot.

ALERT! If a service option other than 2B+D is selected, changing the service
option to the 2B+D setting at a later time could be difficult because of
timeslot allocation. If 2B+D service is anticipated but not initially required,
the ISDN circuit should be turned up as 2B+D to ensure adequate
bandwidth allocation.

Sealing Current Option

The Sealing Current option determines whether the unit will source, or ignore
sealing current. Since the unit is always provisioned for LULT operation,
setting the sealing current option to YES causes a –48VDC sealing current to
be applied to the tip and ring leads of the cable pair leading to the NT1. This
option defaults to YES.

Zero-Byte Substitution Option

The Zero-Byte Substitution option indicates whether a zero byte on one of the
bearer channels (B1 or B2) is allowed to pass through on the DS-1. When the
DS-1 carrying the ISDN circuit is set for B8Zs operation, this option can be set
to NO. When the DS-1 is operating with Alternate Mark Inversion (AMI), this
option must be set to YES. Setting this option to YES causes a bit to be set in
the D channel alerting the far end that a zero byte is to be substituted. In
either case, there is no restriction on the data that can be sent at a 64kbs rate
on either the B1 or B2 channels.

SFU13 Description, Application, and Installation August 2004
Enable MP-EOC Option 363-252-722, Issue 7

Note: A SONET DISC★S system operating in Universal mode does

not have AMI or B8ZS designations because there is no physical DS-1
span. However, for purposes of this discussion, it can be considered to
have a B8ZS designation.

Enable MP-EOC Option

The Enable Multi-Point Embedded Operations Channel (MP-EOC) is used to
select the EOC format for Universal or Non-Universal applications. This
option should be set to YES for Universal or Dynamic Timeslot Assignment
(DTA) applications. The option should be set to NO for INA applications. This
option defaults to YES.

For model SFU13B or later, setting the MP-EOC option to the default YES
makes the SFU13 channel unit compatible with all models of the SFU13.
Choosing NO to the option makes the SFU13 compatible with the U-BR1TE
II™ channel unit, a model SCU13E, and subsequent model SCU13 channel
units with the option also set to NO, or with any 3-DS-0 ISDN channel unit
meeting the requirements of TR-NWT-000397 for D+ channel framing.

Automatic Provisioning Function

The SFU13 has an automatic provisioning function that causes all default
settings to be applied to the channel unit upon insertion into a channel shelf
or ONU if the channel shelf or ONU has sufficient channel space and
timeslots assigned to provide a 2B+D circuit.

This practice does not use automatic provisioning. If automatic provisioning is

to be implemented, note that the ISDN channel units are sensitive to the
order in which they are inserted into the shelf. Since the ISDN cards use a
complex scheme to determine which three pieces of channel bandwidth and
DS-0 timeslots are used, craft activity on automatically provisioned channel
units can cause provisioning errors. It is recommended that all ISDN circuits
be provisioned manually to avoid these issues.

ISDNL: and ISDNR: and F1:F2 Cross-Connects

The SS (FP-1055 and later) or Narrowband EMS TUI commands ISDNL: and
ISDNR: can be used to simplify the process of entering F1 and F2
cross-connects at the RDT/ONU. The ISDNL: and ISDNR: commands are used
when entering F1 and F2 cross-connects at the RDT/ONU. In a 2B+D system,
the commands precede the first channel identifiers and instruct the system to
automatically assign the appropriate following channels for F1 and F2 per
Table 1.C for INA cross-connects, or Table 1.D for universal DS-1
cross-connects. (Use ISDNL: for SFU13s in left slots and ISDNR: for right
slots.)

Local Tests
Local testing from the channel unit is accomplished using the
faceplate-mounted jacks and indicators. The faceplate test jacks provide
access to the SFU13 Transmit (TX) and Receive (RX) lines for B1, B2, or D
channel testing and access. Testing is performed in both directions using the
KS20908 and KS20909 DDS test sets.

The following paragraphs provide information on determining the timeslots

assigned, connecting channels to the test access jacks, performing loopbacks,
and supporting MP-EOC messages.

Diagnostic Tests
There are no channel unit diagnostic tests available for SFU13 channel unit
testing.

Maintenance
This section gives procedures to determine timeslot assignments, connect
channels to the test access jacks, perform loopbacks, and support MP-EOC
messages.

DS-0 Access
Timeslots assigned to each channel used by the SFU13 are determined by
using the SS or Narrowband EMS TUI. Depending on the service option
selected, the SFU13 uses up to three channels. Refer to Fig. 1.3 for an example
of how channels can be grouped for a 2B+D service option. This information is
provided so that the SFU13 can be examined using a DS-1 test set. Use the
following procedure to determine the channels and associated timeslots for a
specific SFU13.

1. Logon to SS or Narrowband EMS TUI. Main Menu displays.

Loopback Tests Using SS or Narrowband EMS TUI

Loopback tests allow the user to loopback B1, B2, or 2B+D, as shown in
Fig. 1.5.

Figure 1.5: ISDN Loopbacks

Use the following procedure to conduct ISDN loopback tests.

Note 1: The following procedure assumes B1 channel loopback

testing. The B2 or D channel is tested in the same manner by
selection from the menus instead of B1.

Note 2: Typically, these tests are more simply conducted from the
ISDN switch. The switch can command the channel unit to loop back
using the MP-EOC. The following procedure is for cases where the
switch does not have the required equipment or is not available.

The Alarm LED on the SFU13 faceplate (Fig. 1.1) illuminates if the unit’s DSL
is not linked to an ISDN-compatible switch. It is not necessary for the DSL to
be linked to perform this loopback test. To pass this test, an SFU13 ISDN
channel unit must be installed and provisioned as a LULT at the ONU in the
corresponding channel shelf and slot. For other than INA applications, a
LUNT-provisioned SCU 13 must also be installed at the COT. In an INA
application, a U-BR1TE II card must be installed in the terminating 0-4. A
digital data loopback test performed from either end confirms that the ISDN
channel units at both ends are operational.

11. Select (2) Operate B1 Loopback from the menu and press <ENTER>.
The system prompts for the following loopback test directions:
(1) Toward Customer Equipment
(2) Toward Network
(3) Both

Direction (1) Toward Customer Equipment initiates Test Access toward

the network.
Direction (2) Toward Network initiates Test Access toward customer
equipment.
Direction (3) Both causes meaningless data on the Test Access.
12. Select (2) Toward Network from the menu. Press <ENTER> and in-
spect yellow SFU13 faceplate LED.
If the yellow Loopback LED on SFU13 faceplate illuminates within 30
seconds after the system acknowledges loopback toward the network, go
to Step 15.
If the LED remains dark, continue with Step 13.
If installed, the NT1 could be selected also to test the drop and the NT1.
13. Press <ESC> twice to return to Step 10. ISDN Maintenance Menu dis-
plays.
14. Repeat Step 10 and Step 11, verifying that the correct COT identification
number and channel number were entered in Step 10.
If the LED still does not illuminate, continue with Step 14.
If the LED illuminates, go to Step 15.
15. Remove and replace SFU13 in accordance with Installation and return to
Step 4.
Note: Connect test access and loopback information are not
refreshed by the CPU for the SFU13. Once the SFU13 is removed,
