2. Distinguish Social and Natural Sciences and Humanities,
3. Compare and contrast the various Social Science disciplines and their fields, main areas of inquiry,
and methods.

LESSON OVERVIEW

In studying Disciplines and Ideas in Social

Sciences the learners will know the disciplines in
Social Sciences that have a great contribution and
impact in the resolving societal issue and problem

sociophysical environment. The term Social
Science implies two important contexts: (1) it
involves the scientific process and (2) it inquires
about the social space. In addition to this, Social
science is a field of human knowledge that deals
with all aspects of the group life of human beings.
So it is subject to change with the changes the

elucidate the rules that govern the natural world by
using the Empirical and Scientific method. Some of its
subject areas are: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth
science, and Anatomy.

Biology - is the study of everything that is, or was once, alive — whether it's a plant, animal
or microorganism.

Chemistry - is a branch of natural science that deals principally with the properties of

MODULE LESSON IN DISCIPLINES & IDEAS IN SOCIAL SCIENCES

Social science helps us to gain knowledge of the society we live in. Generally,
Social Science focuses on the relationships among individuals in society. Even that the
three major disciplines are different in meaning and its focus it is interconnected to
each other, sometimes collaborate with each other. Since the society is constantly
changing the ideas, problems and challenges of mankind adapts and the people
generate solution to each problem in order for the community to progress.

Research Methods in Social Sciences

Methods are grouped according to their research objectives. Inductive research aims to
understand theoretical concepts from available data, while deductive research aims to test
theories using new observed data.

With these two methods, a researcher can choose between two research design strands:
qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative design relies on non-numerical data such as texts and
spoken words as source of information. Quantitative design relies heavily on numerical data.
These research designs require research methods and instruments that would allow for the
acquisition of pertinent data.

The following research methods and instruments are the most prominent:

o A Survey is the process of gathering the responses of a certain number of

participants on a topic. These responses are numerically coded and statistically
analysed for average and correlations.
o A key informant interview is a process of asking individuals a set of questions
face-to-face. The interview guide could be highly structured or semi-structured
depending on the goal of the researcher.
o The participant observation approach enables the researcher to understand a
social phenomenon by immersing in the environment and circumstances of the
people in the study.
