Coyotes

By: Elliott Heckard

Coyote History
Coyotes have appeared many times in
American folklore, and are often regarded
as clever tricksters. They are well known
for being in Native American culture, but
also appear elsewhere. Coyotes were also
regarded as a symbol of military might in
Mesoamerican cosmology. To this day
however, coyotes are thought about
negatively. This is largely due to the
European colonization of the Americas.
Coyote Diet-90% Carnivorous
Prey:

Bison, deer, sheep, rabbits, rodents, birds,

amphibians (excluding toads), lizards snakes,
fish, and insects.

Coyotes can be picky about what they eat, and

may prefer certain foods over others. Coyotes
kill rattlesnakes for food, but will also kill them
to protect their pups.
Coyote Communication
At least 11 different vocalizations are known in adult
coyotes. These sounds are divided into three
categories: antagonistic and alarm, greeting, and
contact. Vocalizations of the first category include
woofs, growls, huffs, barks, bark howls, yelps, and
high-frequency whines. Coyotes are called “the most
vocal wild animal in North America.” Coyotes make a
lot of different sounds that have a lot of different
meanings. Group howls are usually for telling a lost
coyote where the group is, and are also for bringing
together packs to hunt. Lone howls are usually meant
to ask for help or directions to the nearest pack.
Coyote Status
Coyotes are regarded as a well-populated
species. They are found in abundance throughout
Canada, The USA, and Mexico. Because of this,
coyote hunting (along with groundhog hunting) is
half-encouraged so that the species don’t become
too populated. As a result of this, coyotes are
often afraid of humans and go out at night.
However, humans still hunt them by rigging traps
and lighting areas up where a coyote pack is
suddenly before the coyotes can react. Coyotes
are a well-populated species and shouldn’t be
going extinct anytime soon.
