Government systems: forms of government
Trias politica system:
- Separation of powers in the country.
- Separation of power is important to ensure a
balance of power and responsibility.
- Separation of power ensures that different
branches control each other. (The three
branches being Administration, legislation and
Jurisdiction.)
How are they separated?
Administration/Executive:
- this is the seat of the government which consists
of the King and Queen as well as the ministers.
- These executives are all under the leadership of
the Prime Minister
- Finally the council of Ministers take decisions on
matters that affect the government on every
aspect of life in the Netherlands.
The Judicial branch
- The judiciary in the Netherlands, is in the hands
of the judges.
- The Judges are controlled by citizens in the form
of a jury.
- Their main purpose is to settle disputes based
on the laws of the land.
The legislative branch:
- The government and the state general have
legislative power therefore are able to amend the
laws.
- The state generals represent the first and
second chambers; collectively referred to as
Parliament.
How is this organized?
The Dutch Parliament
- known as states generals, consisting of a house
representative
- Both chambers meet to discuss in the Hague
Why the system matters?
- It ensures freedom of its citizens
- It is a systems which ensures that there be no
arm of government is more powerful than the
other.
- System is set up that it protects the rights and
freedoms of its citizens.
Mixed system:
Presidential system:
- The president is given great authority
- The president is the most powerful elected official
- Is the commander and s-chief in the military
- Has the power to make treaties, which has to be
approved by the chairs
- Can make bills which have to be approved by the
senate.
- Becomes president through voting by the minority
vote.
Shared powers:
- congress and federal courts share the powers
reserved to the national government.
- The federal government shares sovereignty with
the governments.
How it works?
- The president, vice president, and the cabinet are
under the executive branch, which carries out the
laws. And the Supreme Court and other federal
courts are under the
judicial branch, which
evaluates the laws
Parliamentary system:
- Is a parliamentary
democracy with a
constitutional monarch.
- A king or Queen is the head of state
- Prime minister is the head of government
- People vote in elections for the members of
Parliament to represent them.
To clarify:
- Uk does not have a constitution but does have
an unwritten constitution.
- Politics takes place within the framework of a
constitutional monarchy. (the queen is the
head of state and the parliament is the head
of government)
- The cabinet is the main body made up of most
senior government.
- Ministers are chosen by the prime ministers.
- The legislative body has absolute sovereignty
