for developing those first generation entrepreneurs who on their own account cannot become
successful entrepreneurs. In this unit, we will discuss about meaning and importance of EDP,
course contents and curriculum of EDPs.There are several organisations engaged in conducting
EDPs in India. In the last portion of the unit, we will cover the institutions providing EDPs.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME - Meaning and Importance

Meaning
Entrepreneurial Development Programme means a programme conducted to help a person in
strengthening his entrepreneurial motive and in acquiring skill and capabilities required for
promoting and running an enterprise efficiently. A programme which is conducted with a motive
to promote potential entrepreneurs, understanding of motives, motivational pattern, their impact
on behaviour and entrepreneurial value is termed as entrepreneurial development programme.
There are a number of programmes which give information to the prospective entrepreneurs
regarding new business idea, how to set up a new venture, how to prepare a project report,
sources of finance etc. These programmes should not be confused with EDP; these are all a part
of EDP. EDP is primarily concerned with developing, motivating entrepreneurial talent and
understanding the impact of motivation on behaviour.

A well designed EDP envisages three tiered approach:

1. Developing achievement motivation and sharpening entrepreneurial traits and behaviour.
2. Guidance on industrial opportunities, incentives, facilities and rules and regulations.
3.Developing managerial and operational capabilities.
Importance
Entrepreneurs are considered as agents of economic growth. They create wealth, generate
employment, provide new goods and services and raise the standard of living. EDP is an
effective way to develop entrepreneurs which can help in accelerating the pace of socio-
economic development, balanced regional growth, and exploitation of locally available
resources. It can also create gainful self-employment. An EDP equips entrepreneurs and makes
them competent to anticipate and deal with a variety of problems that any entrepreneur may have
to face. It gives confidence to the entrepreneur to face uncertainties and take profitable risks. It
prepares them to deserve and make good use of various forms of assistance.
EDP can be beneficial in the following ways:

 Economic Growth: EDP is a tool of industrialisation and path to economic growth

through entrepreneurship.
 Balanced Regional Development: EDP helps in dispersal of economic activities in
different regions by providing training and other support to local people.
 Eliminates Poverty and Unemployment : EDPs provide opportunities for self-
employment and entrepreneurial careers.
 Optimum use of Local Resources : The optimum use of natural, financial and human
resources can be made in a country by training and educating the entrepreneurs.
 Successful Launching of New Unit : EDP develops motivation, competence and
skills necessary for successful launching, management and growth of the enterprise.
 Empowers New Generation Entrepreneurs : EDP, by inculcating entrepreneurial
capabilities and skill in the trainees, create new generation entrepreneur who hitherto
was not an entrepreneur

Area of Entrepreneurship Development

MCED has been a pioneer in espousing social and economic entrepreneurship since
1988.It is atraining institute in the core area of entrepreneurship development. It works as a
facilitator and guide for the creation and cultivation of the entrepreneurial spirit and the concept
of ‘self-employment’ in a nation that is largely driven by third party employment.

At MCED, there is always the hummable buzz of people discussing, brainstorming,

making plans and revamping shelved ideas. The thrum of work and the exciting buzz of activity
is an indelible part of the work culture. MCED is also an incredibly technology savvy
organization which, not surprisingly, is amongst the few offices to enforce the paperless office
concept. This relaxed and fertile office environment has been nurtured by the lack of a formal
overseer as is the case in other organizations. The Governing Council is the policy making
authority of this premier organization and Executive Committee is looking after day-to-day
administration of the Centre.

Entrepreneurs can change the way we live and work. If successful, their revolutions may
improve our standard of living. In short, in addition to creating wealth from their entrepreneurial
ventures, they also create jobs and the conditions for a flourishing society.

He said, a decade ago, I helped found a business dedicated to helping entrepreneurs bring
their business ideas to fruition. I've mentored and coached hundreds of entrepreneurs since.
Many of my students have licensed their ideas to powerful companies or brought them
to market themselves through venturing. I've often wondered what differentiates successful
entrepreneurs from their peers. Are there certain qualities they share? I think so. But I also think
it's important to acknowledge that timing, luck and simply being in the right place at the right
time play a part in many success stories.

Small Scale Industries are those industrial undertakings having a fixed investment in
plant and machinery, whether held on an ownership basis or a lease basis or a hire purchase basis
and not exceeding Rs.1 crore. It has a larger contribution to the growth of an economy. However,
this investment money is varied by the Government from time to time

A small scale unit is normally a one-man show and even in the case of a partnership the
activities are mainly carried out by the active partner and the rest are sleeping partners. The area
of operation of small units is localized, catering to the local or regional demand. Small industries
are fairly intensive with comparatively smaller capital investment than the larger units.
Therefore, these units are more suited for economics where capital is scarce, and there is an
abundant supply of labor. The Ministry of Small Scale Industries has now merged with the
Ministry of Agro and Rural Industries to form the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium
Enterprises (MSME).

financial years has exceeded INR 25 crore or it has completed 5 years from the date of

It has been felt that a lot more thrust is required to ensure e-Governance in the country
promote inclusive growth that covers electronic services, products, devices and job opportunities.
Moreover, electronic manufacturing in the country needs to be strengthened.
