Genre is a term that dates back to ancient Greek literature.

Speaking about its definition, genre is the “term for any category of literature or other forms of art or
entertainment". What is more, this simplest, most practical way to categorize different styles of stories
and content.

In the early days of cinema, genres were much more uniform and defined. The basic genres were
included : action, comedy, drama, fantasy, horror, mystery, romance, thriller, western. As for today,
most of the content is genre hybrids that are created in order to show many unique and different
stories.

First of all, sub-genres were developed to give names and expectations to certain types of films.

On the whole, today we have many subgenres, for example, crime thriller or techno thriller, if we are
talking about the most classic genre - science- fiction, then these are subgenres about space travel or
films about robots and monsters.

Moreover besides, this is a genre remained strong throughout the history of cinema because it could
show the technical advancements of mankind's ,as well as means of fighting aliens and the most
important things is humanity's place in the universe.

In conclusion, genre and subgenre plays a fundamental role in categorizing and understanding various
forms cinema.
