English III Summer Reading Assignment 2019-2020

Welcome to English III and the world of American Literature. English III classes are designed to be
rigorous and challenging thus pushing you to a deeper level of analysis and literary criticism. This summer we will
explore the concept of critical consciousness through the novel The Hate U Give. You will be required to read
one book and complete the required assignments. Assignments are due on the first day of class and will count
as a test grade. During the month you will also write an analytical essay; therefore, the reading of this book is
critical and required.

The Hate U Give written by Angie Thomas has been acclaimed as one of the greatest YA novels about the world that
we live in today. Already a New York Times best-selling book, The Hate U Give won a 2018 Coretta Scott King

the Black Lives Matter movement, it involves the police shooting of an unarmed black teen. The book covers topics
of race, interracial dating, political activism, grief, friendship, wealth disparity, police brutality, addiction, and the
ramifications of social media. I hope that you enjoy reading The Hate U Give this summer and I am excited to begin

Assignment # 1: The Dialectical Journal

Guidelines: First and foremost, a response journal is not a summary of what happened in the book. If you merely
summarize plot, you will fail this assignment. Please type the assignment, as you will be submitting it
electronically via Edmodo. At its best, a reader response journal is just what it sounds like: your responses to
what you have read. Read the Dialectical Journal document and use the Dialectical Journal Chart to create your
entry responses. You are required to create 10 journal entries (2 for each part of the book). Follow the steps below:
Column 1: Select a quote from the book (copy the quote directly from the book.)
Column 2: Provide the page number of the quote.
Column 3: Write your response. A minimum of 3-5 sentences is required.

Not sure what to write about? Here are some tips.

 Make connections with your own experience. What does the reading make you think of? Does it
remind you of anything or anyone?
 Make connections with other texts (novels, stories, poems, plays) or contemporary events.
Do you see any similarities between this story and other texts or events? Does it bring to mind other
related issues?
 Try agreeing with Starr, or another character. Write down the supporting ideas. Try arguing with
a character. On what points, or about what issues, do you disagree? Think of your journal as a place to
carry on a dialogue with the character in which you actually speak with him or her.
 Write about a situation where Starr changes what she says or does in order to “fit in”. What does she
change and why does she change? What effect is she trying to have on the people she is interacting
with?
 Evaluate an action or a decision by a character or characters. Do you feel a wise or a poor
decision has been made? Why? What decision would you prefer to have been made? Why?
