Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001), who performed under the mononym Aaliyah
(/ɑːˈliːə/), was an American recording artist, dancer, actress, and model. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, and
raised in Detroit, Michigan. At the age of 10, she appeared on the television show Star Search and performed in
concert alongside Gladys Knight. At age 12, Aaliyah signed with Jive Records and her uncle Barry Hankerson's
Blackground Records. Hankerson introduced her to R. Kelly, who became her mentor, as well as lead songwriter and
producer of her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number. The album sold three million copies in the United
States and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). After facing
allegations of an illegal marriage with R. Kelly, Aaliyah ended her contract with Jive and signed with Atlantic
Records.
Aaliyah worked with record producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott for her second album, One in a Million; it sold
3.7 million copies in the United States and over eight million copies worldwide. In 2000, Aaliyah appeared in her
first major film, Romeo Must Die. She contributed to the film's soundtrack, which spawned the single "Try Again".
Aaliyah 2
The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 solely on airplay, making Aaliyah the first artist in Billboard history to
achieve this feat. "Try Again" earned Aaliyah a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female R&B Vocalist. After
completing Romeo Must Die, Aaliyah filmed her part in Queen of the Damned. She released her third and final
album, Aaliyah, in July 2001.
On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah and eight others were killed in a plane crash in The Bahamas after filming the music
video for the single "Rock the Boat". The pilot, Luis Morales III, was unlicensed at the time of the accident and had
traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system. Aaliyah's family later filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Blackhawk
International Airways, which was settled out of court. Aaliyah's music has continued to achieve commercial success
with several posthumous releases. Aaliyah sold 52 million records worldwide. She has been credited for helping
redefine contemporary R&B and hip hop, earning her the nicknames "Princess of R&B" and "Queen of Urban Pop".
She is listed by Billboard as the tenth most successful female R&B artist of the past 25 years, and 27th most
successful R&B artist in history.
Early life
Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born on January 16, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York. Born of African American descent,
with Oneida heritage from her grandmother, she was the second and youngest child of Diane and Michael Haughton.
At a young age, Aaliyah was enrolled in voice lessons by her mother. She started performing at weddings, church
choir and charity events. When she was five years old, her family moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she was raised
along with her older brother, Rashad. She attended a Catholic school, Gesu Elementary, where in first grade, she
received a part in the stage play Annie. From then on, she was determined to become an entertainer.
Aaliyah's mother was a vocalist, and her uncle, Barry Hankerson, was an entertainment lawyer who had been
married to Gladys Knight. As a child, Aaliyah traveled with Knight and worked with an agent in New York to
audition for commercials and television programs, including Family Matters; she went on to appear on Star Search
at the age of nine. She auditioned for several record labels and at age 11 appeared in concerts alongside Knight.
Career
In 1996, Aaliyah left Jive Records and signed with Atlantic Records. She worked with record producers Timbaland
and Missy Elliott, who contributed to her second studio album, One in a Million. The album yielded the single "If
Your Girl Only Knew", which topped the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for two weeks. It also generated the
singles "Hot Like Fire" and "4 Page Letter". The following year, Aaliyah was featured on Timbaland & Magoo's
debut single, "Up Jumps da Boogie". One in a Million peaked at number 18 on the Billboard 200, selling over 3.7
million copies in the United States and over eight million copies worldwide. The album was certified double
platinum by the RIAA on June 16, 1997, denoting shipments of two million copies.
Aaliyah attended the Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts, where she majored in drama and
graduated in 1997. Aaliyah began her acting career that same year; she played herself in the police drama television
series New York Undercover. During this time, Aaliyah participated in the Children's Benefit Concert, a charity
concert that took place at the Beacon Theatre in New York. Aaliyah also became the spokesperson for Tommy
Hilfiger Corporation. She contributed on the soundtrack album for the Fox Animation Studios animated feature
Anastasia, performing a cover version of "Journey to the Past" which earned songwriters Lynn Ahrens and Stephen
Flaherty a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Aaliyah performed the song at the 1998
Academy Awards ceremony and became the youngest singer to perform at the event. The song "Are You That
Somebody?" was featured on the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack, which earned Aaliyah her first Grammy Award
nomination. The song peaked at number 21 on the Hot 100.
Aaliyah released her eponymous album, Aaliyah, in July 2001. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200,
selling 187,000 copies in its first week. The first single from the album, "We Need a Resolution", peaked at number
59 on the Billboard Hot 100. Aaliyah was engaged to co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records Damon Dash at the time of
her death and had plans to marry him after the premiere of The Matrix Reloaded.
The week after Aaliyah's death, her third studio album, Aaliyah, rose from number 19 to number one on the
Billboard 200. "Rock the Boat" was released as a posthumous single. The music video premiered on BET's Access
Granted; it became the most viewed and highest rated episode in the history of the show. The song peaked at number
14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It was also included
on the Now That's What I Call Music! 8 compilation series; a portion of the album's profits was donated to the
Aaliyah Memorial Fund. Promotional posters for Aaliyah that had been put up in major cities such as New York and
Los Angeles became makeshift memorials for grieving fans. "More than a Woman" and "I Care 4 U" were released
as posthumuous singles and peaked within the top 25 of the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified double
Platinum by the RIAA and sold 2.95 million copies in the United States. "More than a Woman" reached number one
on the UK singles chart making Aaliyah the first deceased artist to reach number one on the UK singles chart. "More
than a Woman" was replaced by George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" which is the only time in the UK singles chart's
history where a dead artist has replaced another dead artist at number one.
Aaliyah was signed to appear in several future films, including Honey, a romantic film titled Some Kind of Blue, and
a Whitney Houston-produced remake of the 1976 film Sparkle. Before her death, Aaliyah had filmed part of her role
in The Matrix Reloaded and was scheduled to appear in The Matrix Revolutions as Zee. The role was subsequently
recast to Nona Gaye. Aaliyah's scenes were included in the tribute section of the Matrix Ultimate Collection series.[2]
Personal life
With the release of Age Ain't Nothing but a Number, rumors circulated of a relationship between Aaliyah and R.
Kelly. Shortly after, there was speculation about a secret marriage with the release of "Age Ain't Nothing but a
Number" and the adult content that Kelly had written for Aaliyah. Vibe magazine later revealed a marriage certificate
that listed the couple married on August 31, 1994, in Sheraton Gateway Suites in Rosemont, Illinois. Aaliyah, who
was 15 at the time, was listed as 18 on the certificate; the illegal marriage was annulled in February 1995 by her
parents. The pair continued to deny marriage allegations, stating that neither was married.
Death
On August 25, 2001, at 6:45 p.m. (EST), Aaliyah and various members of the record company boarded a
twin-engine Cessna 402B (registration N8097W) at the Marsh Harbour Airport in Abaco Islands, The Bahamas, to
travel to the Opa-locka Airport in Florida, after they completed filming the music video for the single "Rock the
Boat". They had a flight scheduled the following day, but with filming finishing early, Aaliyah and her entourage
were eager to return to the United States and made the decision to leave immediately. The designated airplane was
smaller than the Cessna 404 which they had originally flown in on, still the whole party and all of the equipment
were accommodated on board. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff, about 200 feet (60 m) from the runway.
Aaliyah and the eight others on board, pilot Luis Morales III, hair stylist Eric Forman, Anthony Dodd, security guard
Scott Gallin, video producer Douglas Kratz, stylist Christopher Maldonado, and Blackground Records employees
Keith Wallace and Gina Smith, were all killed.
According to findings from an inquest conducted by the coroner's office in The Bahamas, Aaliyah suffered from
"severe burns and a blow to the head", in addition to severe shock and a weak heart. The coroner theorized that she
went into such a state of shock that even if she had survived the crash, her recovery would have been nearly
impossible.
Aaliyah 5
As the subsequent investigation determined, when the aircraft attempted to depart, it was over its maximum takeoff
weight by 700 pounds (320 kg) and was carrying one excess passenger, according to its certification. The National
Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report stated that "the airplane was seen lifting off the runway, and then nose
down, impacting in a marsh on the south side of the departure end of runway 27 and then exploding in flames." It
indicated that the pilot was not approved to fly the plane. Morales falsely obtained his Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) license by showing hundreds of hours never flown, and he may also have falsified how many
hours he had flown in order to get a job with his employer, Blackhawk International Airways. Additionally, an
autopsy performed on Morales revealed traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system. The NTSB reported that the
maximum allowed gross weight of the plane was "substantially exceeded" and that the center of gravity was
positioned beyond its rear limit. John Frank of the Cessna Pilots Association stated that the plane was "definitely
overloaded".
Aaliyah's funeral was held on August 31, 2001, at the St. Ignatius
Loyola Church in Manhattan. Her body was set in a silver casket,
which was carried in a glass hearse and was drawn by horse. An
estimated 800 mourners were in attendance at the procession. Among
those in attendance at the private ceremony were Missy Elliott,
Timbaland, Gladys Knight, Lil' Kim and Sean Combs. After the
service, 22 white doves were released to symbolize each year of
Aaliyah's life. Aaliyah was interred in a private room at the end of a
corridor in the Rosewood Mausoleum at the Ferncliff Cemetery in

The day of the crash was Morales' first official day with Blackhawk
International Airways, an FAA Part 135 single-pilot operation. Morales was not registered with the FAA to fly for
Blackhawk. As a result of the accident, Aaliyah's parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company, which
was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount. Barry & Sons, Inc., a corporation formed in 1992 to develop,
promote and capitalize Aaliyah and to oversee the production and distribution of her records and music videos,
brought an unsuccessful lawsuit in the New York Supreme Court against Instinct Productions LLC, the company that
was hired in August 2001 to produce the music video for "Rock the Boat". The case was dismissed because New
York's wrongful death statute permits only certain people in relation to the deceased to recover damages for
wrongful death.
Posthumous career
She won two posthumous awards at the American Music Awards of 2002; Favorite Female R&B Artist and Favorite
R&B/Soul Album for Aaliyah. Her second and final film, Queen of the Damned, was released in February 2002.
Before its release, Aaliyah's brother, Rashad, re-dubbed some of her lines during post-production. It grossed
US$15.2 million in its first weekend, ranking number one at the box office. On the first anniversary of Aaliyah's
death, a candlelight vigil was held in Times Square; millions of fans observed a moment of silence; and throughout
the United States, radio stations played her music in remembrance. In December 2002, a collection of previously
unreleased material was released as Aaliyah's first posthumous album, I Care 4 U. A portion of the proceeds was
donated to the Aaliyah Memorial Fund, a program that benefits the Revlon UCLA Women's Cancer Research
Program and Harlem's Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. It debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, selling
280,000 copies in its first week. The album's lead single, "Miss You", peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot
100 and topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. In August of the following year, clothing retailer Christian Dior
donated profits from sales in honor of Aaliyah.
In 2005, Aaliyah's second compilation album, Ultimate Aaliyah was released in the UK by Blackground Records.
Ultimate Aaliyah is a three disc set, which included a greatest hits audio CD and a DVD. Andy Kellman of AllMusic
Aaliyah 6
remarked "Ultimate Aaliyah adequately represents the shortened career of a tremendous talent who benefited from
some of the best songwriting and production work by Timbaland, Missy Elliott, and R. Kelly." A documentary
movie Aaliyah Live in Amsterdam was released in 2011., shortly before the tenth anniversary of Aaliyah's death. The
documentary, by Pogus Caesar, contained previously unseen footage shot of her career beginnings in 1995 when she
was appearing in the Netherlands.
In March 2012, music producer Jeffrey "J-Dub" Walker announced on his Twitter account that a song "Steady
Ground", which he produced for Aaliyah's third album, would be included in the forthcoming posthumous Aaliyah
album. This second proposed posthumous album would feature this song using demo vocals, as Walker claims the
originals were somehow lost by his sound engineer. Aaliyah's brother Rashad later refuted Walker's claim, claiming
that "no official album [is] being released and supported by the Haughton family." On August 5, 2012, a song
entitled "Enough Said" was released online. The song was produced by Noah "40" Shebib and features Canadian
rapper Drake. Four days later, Jomo Hankerson confirmed a posthumous album is being produced and that it is
scheduled to be released by the end of 2012 by Blackground Records. The album was reported to include 16
unreleased songs and have contributions from Aaliyah's longtime collaborators Timbaland and Missy Elliott, among
others. On August 13, Timbaland and Missy Elliott dismissed rumors about being contacted or participating for the
project. Elliott's manager Mona Scott-Young said in a statement to XXL, "Although Missy and Timbaland always
strive to keep the memory of their close friend alive, we have not been contacted about the project nor are there any
plans at this time to participate. We've seen the reports surfacing that they have been confirmed to participate but that
is not the case. Both Missy and Timbaland are very sensitive to the loss still being felt by the family so we wanted to
clear up any misinformation being circulated." Elliott herself said, "Tim and I carry Aaliyah with us everyday, like
so many of the people who love her. She will always live in our hearts. We have nothing but love and respect for her
memory and for her loved ones left behind still grieving her loss. They are always in our prayers."
In June 2013, Aaliyah was featured on a new track by Chris Brown, titled "Don't Think They Know"; with Aaliyah
singing the song's hook. The video features dancing holographic versions of Aaliyah. The song is set to appear on
Brown's upcoming sixth studio album, X. In January 2014, producer Noah "40" Shebib confirmed that the
posthumous album was shelved due to the negative reception surrounding Drake's involvement. Shebib added,
"Aaliyah's mother saying, 'I don't want this out' was enough for me [...] I walked away very quickly."
Artistry
Aaliyah had the vocal range of a soprano. With the release of her debut single "Back & Forth", Dimitri Ehrlich of
Entertainment Weekly expressed that Aaliyah's "silky vocals are more agile than those of self-proclaimed queen of
hip-hop soul Mary J. Blige." Aaliyah described her sound as "street but sweet", which featured her "gentle" vocals
over a "hard" beat. Though Aaliyah did not write any of her own material, her lyrics were described as in-depth. She
incorporated R&B, pop and hip hop into her music. Her songs were often uptempo and at the same time often dark,
revolving around "matters of the heart". After her R. Kelly-produced debut album, Aaliyah worked with Timbaland
and Missy Elliott, whose productions were more electronic. Sasha Frere-Jones of The Wire finds Aaliyah's "Are You
That Somebody?" to be Timbaland's "masterpiece" and exemplary of his production's start-stop rhythms, with "big
Aaliyah 7
half-second pauses between beats and voices". Keith Harris of Rolling Stone cites "Are You That Somebody?" as
"one of '90s R&B's most astounding moments".
Aaliyah's songs have been said to have "crisp production" and "staccato arrangements" that "extend genre
boundaries" while containing "old-school" soul music. Kelefah Sanneh of The New York Times called Aaliyah "a
digital diva who wove a spell with ones and zeroes", and writes that her songs comprised "simple vocal riffs,
repeated and refracted to echo the manipulated loops that create digital rhythm", as Timbaland's
"computer-programmed beats fitted perfectly with her cool, breathy voice to create a new kind of electronic music."
When she experimented with other genres on Aaliyah, such as Latin pop and heavy metal, Entertainment Weekly's
Craig Seymour panned the attempt. As her albums progressed, writers felt that Aaliyah matured, calling her progress
a "declaration of strength and independence". Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic described her eponymous
album, Aaliyah, as "a statement of maturity and a stunning artistic leap forward" and called it one of the strongest
urban soul records of its time. She portrayed "unfamiliar sounds, styles and emotions", but managed to please critics
with the contemporary sound it contained. Ernest Hardy of Rolling Stone felt that Aaliyah reflected a stronger
technique, where she gave her best vocal performance. Prior to her death, Aaliyah expressed a desire to learn about
the burgeoning UK garage scene she had heard about at the time.
Legacy
Aaliyah has been credited for helping redefine R&B and hip hop in the 1990s, "leaving an indelible imprint on the
music industry as a whole." Steve Huey of AllMusic wrote Aaliyah ranks among the "elite" artists of the R&B genre,
as she "played a major role in popularizing the stuttering, futuristic production style that consumed hip-hop and
urban soul in the late '90s." Described as one of "R&B's most important artists" during the 1990s, her second studio
album, One in a Million, became one of the most influential R&B albums of the decade. Music critic Simon
Reynolds cited "Are You That Somebody?" as "the most radical pop single" of 1998. Kelefah Sanneh of The New
York Times wrote that rather than being the song's focal point, Aaliyah "knew how to disappear into the music, how
to match her voice to the bass line", and consequently "helped change the way popular music sounds; the twitchy,
Aaliyah 8
beat-driven songs of Destiny's Child owe a clear debt to 'Are You That Somebody'." Sanneh asserted that by the time
of her death in 2001, Aaliyah "had recorded some of the most innovative and influential pop songs of the last five
years." With sales of 8.1 million albums in the United States and an estimated 24 to 32 million albums worldwide,
Aaliyah earned the nicknames "Princess of R&B" and "Queen of Urban Pop", as she "proved she was a muse in her
own right". Ernest Hardy of Rolling Stone dubbed her as the "undisputed queen of the midtempo come-on". Japanese
pop singer Hikaru Utada has said several times that "It was when I heard Aaliyah's Age Ain't Nothing but a Number
that I got hooked on R&B.", after which Utada released her debut album First Love with heavy R&B influences.
Aaliyah was honored at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards by Janet Jackson, Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Ginuwine
and her brother, Rashad, who all paid tribute to her. In the same year, the United States Social Security
Administration ranked the name Aaliyah one of the 100 most popular names for newborn girls. Aaliyah was ranked
as one of "The Top 40 Women of the Video Era" in VH1's 2003 The Greatest series. She was also ranked at number
18 on BET's "Top 25 Dancers of All Time". Aaliyah appeared on both 2000 and 2001 list of Maxim Hot 100 in
position 41 and the latter at 14. In memory of Aaliyah, the Entertainment Industry Foundation created the Aaliyah
Memorial Fund to donate money raised to charities she supported. In December 2009, Billboard magazine ranked
Aaliyah at number 70 on its Top Artists of the Decade, while her eponymous album was ranked at number 181 on
the magazine's Top 200 Albums of the Decade. She is listed by Billboard as the tenth most successful female R&B
artist of the past 25 years, and 27th most successful R&B artist overall. In 2012, VH1 ranked her number 48 in
"VH1's Greatest Women in Music".
Aaliyah's work has influenced numerous artists including Adele, Ciara, Beyoncé Knowles, Monica, Chris Brown,
Rihanna, Azealia Banks, Sevyn Streeter, Keyshia Cole, J. Cole, Kelly Rowland, Zendaya, Rita Ora, The xx,
Omarion, Canadian R&B singer Keshia Chanté who is said to play as her in her pending biopic, complimented the
singer's futuristic style of music. R&B singer and friend Brandy said about the late singer "She came out before
Monica and I did, she was our inspiration. At the time, record companies did not believe in kid acts and it was just
inspiring to see someone that was winning and winning being themselves. When I met her I embraced her, I was so
happy to meet her." Rapper Drake said that the singer has had the biggest influence on his career. He also has a
tattoo of the singer behind his back.
In 2012, British singer-songwriter Katy B released the song Aaliyah as a tribute to Aaliyah's legacy and lasting
impression on R&B music. The song first appeared on Katy B's Danger EP and featured Jessie Ware on guest
vocals.
On June 16, 2014, it was announced that Recording artist and Disney star Zendaya will play Aaliyah in a new
Lifetime TV biopic movie titled Aaliyah: Princess of R&B, the biopic will be shot in Toronto in summer 2014 and
will premiere on Lifetime in fall 2014. [3] [4]

The discography of Aaliyah (1979–2001), an American singer, dancer, actress & model, contains three studio
albums, two compilation albums and 26 singles. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was raised in Detroit,
Michigan. At age 10, she appeared on Star Search and performed in concert alongside Gladys Knight. At age 12,
Aaliyah was signed to Jive Records and Blackground Records by her uncle, Barry Hankerson. He introduced her to
R. Kelly, who became her mentor, as well as lead songwriter and producer of her debut album. Age Ain't Nothing but
a Number sold three million copies in the United States and was certified double Platinum by the Recording Industry
Association of America (RIAA). After facing allegations of an illegal marriage with Kelly, Aaliyah ended her
contract with Jive and signed to Atlantic Records. During her short career, Aaliyah earned 13 top 40 singles as well
as 18 top 40 singles in the UK.
Aaliyah worked with record producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott for her second album, One in a Million, which
sold three million copies in the United States and over eight million copies worldwide. In 2000, Aaliyah appeared in
her first major film, Romeo Must Die. She also contributed to the film's soundtrack, where "Try Again" was released
as a single. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 solely on radio airplay, making Aaliyah the first artist in
Billboard history to achieve this goal. "Try Again" earned Aaliyah a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female
R&B Vocalist.
After completing Romeo Must Die, Aaliyah filmed her part in Queen of the Damned. She released her third and final
album, Aaliyah, in July 2001. On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah and eight others were killed in a plane crash in The
Bahamas after filming the music video for the single "Rock the Boat". The pilot, Luis Morales III, was unlicensed at
the time of the accident and had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system. Aaliyah's family later filed a wrongful
death lawsuit against Blackhawk International Airways, which was settled out of court. Since then, Aaliyah has
achieved commercial success with several posthumous releases. As of December 2008, she has sold 8.4 million
albums in the United States and over 32 million albums worldwide.

Aaliyah chronology
Age Ain't Nothing but a Number is the debut studio album by American R&B recording artist Aaliyah, released
under Jive and Blackground Records on May 24, 1994, in the United States. After being signed by her uncle Barry
Hankerson, Aaliyah was introduced to recording artist and producer R. Kelly. He became her mentor, as well as the
lead songwriter and producer of the album. The duo recorded the album at the Chicago Recording Company in
Chicago, Illinois. The album featured two hit singles, including the top ten-charting "Back & Forth" and "At Your
Best (You Are Love)"; both singles were certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
One additional single followed in the U.S.: "Age Ain't Nothing But a Number". Two more singles were released
internationally after "Age Ain't Nothing But a Number": "Down with the Clique" and "The Thing I Like".
Age Ain't Nothing But a Number received generally favorable reviews from critics. Many noted Aaliyah's vocal
ability and praised the lyrical content. Aaliyah was credited for redefining R&B by blending her voice with Kelly's
Age Ain't Nothing but a Number 28
new jack swing. The album peaked at number 18 on the Billboard 200 and sold over two million copies in the
United States, where it was certified double platinum by the RIAA. The album was certified Gold in Canada by the
Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) and Silver in the United Kingdom by the British Phonographic
Industry (BPI) to date. The album has sold over six million copies worldwide.
Musical content
Aaliyah sang her songs in a falsetto. She felt that the songs "came at you kind of tough, a bit edgy, hip-hop, but the
vocals can be very soothing". She went on to say, "lyrically I want things to be different."

Age Ain't Nothing But a Number received generally favorable reviews from music critics. Some writers noted that
Aaliyah's "silky vocals" and "sultry voice" blended with Kelly's new jack swing helping define R&B in the 1990s.
Her sound was also compared to that of female quartet En Vogue. Christopher John Farley of Time magazine
described the album as a "beautifully restrained work", noting that Aaliyah's "girlish, breathy vocals rode calmly on
R.Kelly's rough beats". Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic felt that the album had its "share of filler", but
described the singles as "slyly seductive". He also claimed that the songs on the album were "frequently better" than
that of Kelly's first studio album, 12 Play.
Age Ain't Nothing but a Number 29
The album debuted at number 24 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 74,000 copies in its first week. The album

three times Platinum by the RIAA. In 2001, the album had sold 5 million copies worldwide. In Canada, the album
sold over 50,000 copies and was certified gold by the CRIA. It also peaked at number 44 on the Dutch Albums
Chart; it peaked at number 23 on the UK Albums Chart, where it was certified silver by the BPI for sales of 60,000.

Aaliyah chronology
One in a Million is the second studio album by American R&B recording artist Aaliyah, first released on August 27,
1996 by Blackground Records and Atlantic Records, after publicly ending her contract with Jive Records after facing
allegations of an illegal marriage with R. Kelly. The album was recorded from August 1995 to July 1996 with a
variety of producers including Timbaland, Missy Elliott, Carl-So-Lowe, J. Dibbs, Jermaine Dupri, Kay Gee, Vincent
Herbert, Rodney Jerkins, Craig King, Darren Lighty, Darryl Simmons. The album featured several guest vocalists,
including Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Treach, Slick Rick and Tank.
One in a Million received general critical acclaim from music critics, who complimented its "depth" compared to
that of her debut album and Aaliyah's vocal performances, with some critics calling it "smoother, more seductive,
and stronger than before" and praised the "luxurious melodies and dreamy harmonies". Other critics called the album
"one of the most influential R&B albums of the '90s", and it has been recognized by writers and music critics as
redefining the genre coming into the late 1990s and solidifying Aaliyah's position as a key figure in R&B music. The
album was ranked number 90 on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest albums of the 1990s. It was also listed as one of 33 hip
hop/R&B albums in Rolling Stone's "Essential Recordings of the '90s".[1]
One in a Million debuted at twenty on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 40,500 copies in its opening week; twenty-two
weeks later the album peaked at eighteen, being certified Gold by RIAA. Within a few months, the album proved
One in a Million 32
Aaliyah's breakthrough and a major milestone in the careers of Missy Elliott and Timbaland. It was certified double
Platinum on June 16, 1997. The album was also certified Gold by the Canadian recording industry for shipments of
50,000 copies. One in a Million has sold over two million copies in the United States and 10 million copies
worldwide.
The album produced six singles, "If Your Girl Only Knew", "One in a Million", "Got to Give It Up", "4 Page Letter",
"Hot Like Fire", and "The One I Gave My Heart To", with the last becoming the album's highest-charting single,
peaking at nine on the US Billboard Hot 100. In 2004, the album was re-released in Germany with altered artwork,
and again in 2006. The disc is copy-protected, and therefore will not show up when placed in some PCs, but it will
show up when inserted into a Mac, and it will play in most CD players. It included the standard 17 tracks, plus the
bonus song "Come Over".
Background
After Barry Hankerson, Aaliyah's uncle, signed a distribution deal with Jive Records, he signed her to his
Blackground Records label at the age of 12. Hankerson then introduced her to recording artist and producer R. Kelly.
He became Aaliyah's mentor, as well as lead songwriter and producer of the album. Aaliyah and Kelly began
recording the album in 1993 when she was 14. The duo recorded the first song, "Old School", at the Chicago
Recording Company in Chicago, Illinois. While recording the album, Kelly coached her as they worked several
hours in the studio. She often sang the songs multiple times in order to achieve "excellence". He claimed that
Aaliyah was "one of the best young artists" he had worked with. Aaliyah's debut album Age Ain't Nothing but a
Number, was released under Jive and Blackground Records; the album debut at number 24 on the Billboard 200
chart, selling 74,000 copies in its first week. It ultimately peaked at number 18 on the Billboard 200 and sold over
three million copies in the United States, where it was certified two times Platinum by the RIAA. In Canada, the
album sold over 50,000 copies and was certified gold by the CRIA. Aaliyah's debut single, "Back & Forth", topped
the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for three weeks and was certified Gold by the RIAA. The second
single, a cover of The Isley Brothers' "At Your Best (You Are Love)", peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot
100 and was also certified Gold by the RIAA. The title track, "Age Ain't Nothing but a Number", peaked at number
75 on the Hot 100. Additionally, she released "The Thing I Like" as part of the soundtrack to the 1994 film A Low
Down Dirty Shame. In 1996, Aaliyah left Jive Records and signed with Atlantic Records.

One in a Million was recorded from August 1995 to July 1996. Missy Elliott and Timbaland wrote and produced the
majority of the album. Other producers included Rodney Jerkins, Jermaine Dupri, and Kay Gee. The album was
executive produced by Barry Hankerson and Jomo Hankerson. 57 songs were recorded for the album, but a majority
of them were cut from the final product. One of those tracks included the song, "Sugar & Spice", the first track
Aaliyah did with Timbaland & Missy Elliott; however due to label disagreements with the song, it never made the
final cut of the album. On October 8, 2010, a rare demo version of the song performed by 1990s R&B group, Sugah
(which included notable R&B singer, Tweet) was leaked; reports have also surfaced that the track may have also
been used as a sample for another R&B group, Tha' Truth, for their 1997 song, "Candy". Another track that was
going to be included on the album was "I Care 4 U", but wasn't completed in time for mastering. It was later
included on Aaliyah's third studio album, Aaliyah.

If Your Girl Only Knew was released as the album's lead single in August 1996, it peaked at number 11 on the US
Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week ending October 19, 1996, becoming her third single to reach the top 20. It
reached the top of the Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart for two weeks. "If Your Girl Only Knew" was also a hit in
the UK, peaking in the top thirty of the UK Singles Chart at number 21 when it was originally released by itself. It
was re-issued with "One in a Million" as a double A-side and reached a new peak position of number 15. The
album's second single "One in a Million" was released December 10, 1996, the song was a top twenty hit in the UK,
reaching number fifteen. "4 Page Letter" was released as the album third single on March 11, 1997. "Hot Like Fire
and "The One I Gave My Heart To" were released simultaneously on September 16, 1997. Hot Like Fire charted
poorly unlike "The One I Gave My Heart To" which debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the issue week of October
4, 1997 at number 24 and went on to peak at number 9,[2] making it the highest-charting single from the album. In
the same issue week, the song debuted on the U.S. Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at number 18 and went on to peak
at number 7.[3] The song was certified Gold by the RIAA on October 21, 1997.[4]

In her review for Vibe magazine, music critic Dream Hampton said that Aaliyah's "deliciously feline" voice has the
same "pop appeal" as Janet Jackson's and is complemented by the producers' funky, coherent tracks. Connie Johnson
of the Los Angeles Times found the album's material exceptional, including the "teasingly witchy" "If Your Girl Only
Knew". Q magazine said that, with "her smooth, sweetly seductive vocal firmly to the fore, [Aaliyah] works through
a set of predominantly slow and steamy swingbeat numbers, all clipped beats, luxurious melodies and dreamy
harmonies".[5] Robert Christgau, writing in The Village Voice, was less enthusiastic and cited only "Got to Give It
Up" as a "choice cut", indicating "a good song on an album that isn't worth your time or money".
Since its initial reception, the album has been recognized by writers and music critics as redefining the genre coming
into the late 1990s and solidifying Aaliyah's position as a key figure in R&B music.Wikipedia:Citation needed In a
retrospective review, Slant Magazine said that it is "undoubtedly one of the most influential R&B albums of the
One in a Million 34
'90s," and credited it for establishing "Aaliyah and the Timbo family as undeniable hip-hop forces." Allmusic viewed
it as a significant improvement over her debut album with "greater variety of material" and producers, and called
Aaliyah's voice "smoother, more seductive, and stronger than before". The album was ranked number 90 on Rolling
Stone's 100 greatest albums of the 90s. It was also listed as one of 33 Hip hop/R&B albums in Rolling Stone's
"Essential Recordings of the 90s".
Commercial performance
It was an international success for the genre, with worldwide sales being 8 million as of 2008. The album debuted at
number 20 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 40,500 copies in its first week. In its 22nd week on the chart the album
peaked at 18. The album was certified Gold by the RIAA on October 23, 1996; over 500,000 copies shipments. On
February 5, 1997, the album was certified Platinum for shipments of over 1,000,000 units; making it, at the time, her
second platinum album. On June 16, 1997, the album was certified 2× Platinum, with more than 2 million copies
shipments. After Aaliyah's death, One in a Million returned to the Billboard 200, and U.S. Billboard Top
R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. During this time the album also topped the Top Catalog Albums for 12 weeks.

Aaliyah chronology
Aaliyah is the third and final studio album by American R&B recording artist Aaliyah, released on July 7, 2001, by
Blackground Records and Virgin Records. After raising her profile with hit soundtrack singles during the late 1990s,
Aaliyah started working on the album in 1998, but rescheduled its recording around her developing film career. She
resumed its recording in 2000 at Sing Sing Studios in Australia, where she shot her role for the 2002 film Queen of
the Damned during the day and recorded songs at night. Aaliyah worked primarily with Blackground's in-house crew
of writers and producers, including Bud'da, J. Dub, Rapture, and Eric Seats, as well as longtime collaborator
Timbaland.
Aaliyah is an R&B and neo soul album with a diverse musical style that incorporates funk, hip hop, soul, and
elements of electronica. Its songs feature synthesizer melodies, fragmented beats, distorted guitar, eccentricly
manipulated vocals and song structures, and lyrics about the complexities and stages of romantic relationships. Most
of the album was written by lyricist Static Major, who shared a close friendship and strong rapport with Aaliyah. She
viewed the album as a reflection of herself as both a young adult and a matured vocalist.
Aaliyah received highly positive reviews from critics and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, but sold
diminishingly afterwards. Since Blackground and Virgin wanted a high charting single to increase sales, Aaliyah
shot a music video for the song "Rock the Boat" in the Bahamas, but died in a plane crash on a return flight to the
United States on August 25, 2001. After her death, the album's sales skyrocketed and propelled it to number one on
Aaliyah 38
the Billboard 200. Aaliyah was released during a period of peak activity in contemporary R&B and, since its initial
reception, has been cited by critics as one of the best R&B albums of its time.
Background
Aaliyah released her album One in a Million in 1996, and graduated from high school the following year. She gained
further exposure with radio hits from film soundtracks, including her 1998 single "Are You That Somebody?". After
it became the biggest hit of her career at that point, Aaliyah wanted to keep a lower profile and avoid overexposure.
A follow-up album was planned for February 1999, but she postponed its recording to develop an acting career,
which led to a starring role in the 2000 film Romeo Must Die. The film heightened her profile significantly, while the
soundtrack's single "Try Again" became her first number-one pop hit. Her label Blackground Records used the film
and its soundtrack album to set up a distribution deal with Virgin Records America, which would distribute
Blackground's subsequent releases globally, including her third album.
Most of the album's songs were recorded at either Sony Studios in New York City or Sing Sing Studios in
Melbourne, including "Loose Rap", which was done at both studios. Aaliyah recorded "More Than a Woman" at
Manhattan Center Studios, "U Got Nerve" at Soundtracks Studios in New York City, "We Need a Resolution" at
Westlake Studios, and "I Care 4 U" at Magic Mix Studios and Music Grinder Studios in Los Angeles. She had first
recorded "I Care 4 U", written by past collaborator Missy Elliott, in 1996 for One in a Million, but scrapped it after
that album's completion. Aaliyah worked with Blackground Records' in-house crew of musicians, songwriters, and
producers, including novice producers Bud'da, J. Dub, Rapture, and Eric Seats. Music manager Jimmy Henchman, a
friend of Aaliyah's manager Barry Hankerson, helped coordinate the album and arranged for the producers and
writers to work with Aaliyah.
Static from the R&B band Playa wrote most of the album's lyrics. While his band was growing apart, he was invited
by Blackground to be a lead writer for the album after writing "Are You That Somebody?" and "Try Again". Static
was a part of Aaliyah's close group of friends, which included Missy Elliott and Timbaland, and shared an
infatuation with her. He found Aaliyah to be ideal for his songwriting style, while she believed that he could
accurately portray her feelings. A subtly sexual lyricist, he wrote "Rock the Boat" for her in 1999, but Blackground
Aaliyah 39
felt she was not ready for the song. Barry Hankerson said of his songwriting, "We always were protective over every
lyric ... But he did things where you never felt offended. You just felt like you overheard someone thinking ... he was
clever ... Aaliyah depended on him [and] he depended on her." Elliott said that he was "a part of that bridge of
Aaliyah growing up lyrically." While she discussed the lyrics with Static, Aaliyah consulted Bud'da about the sound
and musical direction of the album. She was interested in learning about the UK garage scene at the time.
Post-production
In March 2001, Aaliyah finished recording the album after having filmed her part in Queen of the Damned for four
months, which ultimately delayed the album's release. In Australia, she also did a photo shoot for the album, with
photographers Jeff Dunas, Jonathan Mannion, David LaChapelle, and Albert Watson. Aaliyah handled five pythons
at the shoot and developed an affinity for snakes, finding them "dangerous, but quite beautiful" and representative of
her on the album. She revisited the snake theme in her music video for "We Need a Resolution" in April and told
MTV, "They live in solitude, [and] there are times in my life [when] I just want to be by myself. There are times I
can't even figure myself out. I feel they are very complex creatures, [but] at the same time, they're sexy, too. That's
why they represent Aaliyah pretty well." She described the album as "a good reflection of [myself] and the person [I
am] today", saying in an interview for Jet magazine, "I am a young adult now, and I think this album shows my
growth vocally." Aaliyah was mastered by Bernie Grundman at his studio in Los Angeles.
with unfaithful cads ('You Got Nerve'), mind games ('I Refuse'), self-impressed hunks ('Extra Smooth'), gossip and
envy ('Loose Rap'), or physical abuse ('Never No More')."
Aaliyah sings with restrained, soprano vocals throughout the album. Vibe magazine's Hyun Kim argued that Aaliyah
drew focus to her singing more than her previous albums, "bringing it to the forefront as opposed to hiding it behind
the layered production." Ballads such as "I Care 4 U", "Never No More", and "I Refuse" are sung emotionally, and
express melancholy qualities and hurt. Music journalist Christopher John Farley viewed that she "emotionally
detail[ed] a song" unlike on her previous albums and that "her gentle voice now seemed like something elemental, a
kindly wind blowing through the branches of a big tree."[4] According to Joshua Clover, Aaliyah pushes "notes into
strange corners of syncopation's shifty architecture" on the more "shape-defying" tracks. He wrote that "she makes
the sonics tell the story, creating meaning outside the lyrics, pleasure beyond the hooks."
Songs
"More Than a Woman"
A dense arrangement of digital strings, synthetic bass, and lissome rhythms backs Aaliyah's promise to be "more than a
woman" to a lover.
"We Need a Resolution" depicts a dilemma between discordant lovers over push-pull rhythms. It leaves its hook
unresolved, plays backwards after Timbaland's rap, and concludes with a reversed loop of the vocal "where were you
last night", which echoes the female protagonist's sentiment. "Loose Rap", which is titled after the slang phrase of
the same name, dismisses romantic admirers who use corny pick-up lines. It features underwater noises, low-key
electronica reminiscent of the Neptunes, and harmonically soft vocals by Aaliyah, who declares, "it ain't just rhythm
and blues." Static mumbles the song's hook. "Rock the Boat" has a slick R&B production, sexual and nautical
imagery, and breathless vocals by Aaliyah, who instructs her lover on how to please her sexually and equates her
erotic high to a drug high.
On the club-influenced "More Than a Woman",[5] Aaliyah sings over harsh-sounding synthesizer and guitar sounds.
"Never No More" mixes classic soul with contemporary hip hop, and live strings by producer Bud'da. It is about a
defiant woman who decides to leave a physically abusive relationship.[5] On "I Care 4 U", the narrator tries to
console a friend who is heartbroken, but finds herself distressed by the unrequited feelings she has for him. The song
features sibilant wind chimes, reverberating synth chords, and vocal percussion. The key-shifting "Extra Smooth"
addresses an enthusiastic courtship, and incorporates hip hop, funk, and drum and bass. It was inspired by a
conversation between Aaliyah and Static about how men try to act suave. "Read Between the Lines", which deals
with infidelity, is a rhythmic digital samba, with Latin percussion.
The funky "U Got Nerve" features multi-layered, staccato vocals, and electronic blips. A baroque romantic concerto,
"I Refuse" incorporates audio recordings of faraway horse hooves and a rainstorm in its opening. Its music also
features melancholy keyboard sounds and ornamental elements, including string instruments, guitars, and minimalist
percussion, all of which lead to culminate dramatically during the song. "I Can Be" is about an adulterous man's
mistress who wants to be his foremost girlfriend. Alex Macpherson of The Guardian wrote that "Aaliyah's blank,
numbed delivery" on the song "makes being the other woman seem like an emotionally masochistic form of
self-medication." "Those Were the Days" dispassionately dismisses a male lover, and "What If" angrily threatens an
unfaithful lover and by extension similar men. Both "I Can Be" and "What If" have 2-step and rock elements. The
latter song draws particularly on Detroit techno and industrial rock.

Upon its release in July 2001, Aaliyah received highly positive reviews from critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a
normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 76,
indicating "generally favorable reviews", based on 14 reviews. Michael Odell of The Guardian felt that it is "as
much a brochure for the current state of R&B production facilities" as it is about Aaliyah's singing. He found the
music's textures "scintillating" and felt that its distinguishing characteristic is "a playful and confident reworking of
the [R&B] canon." In his review for the Chicago Tribune, Brad Cawn viewed that Aaliyah demonstrates Sade's
grace and Missy Elliott's daring, and called its music "cool and glittery neo-soul ... equal parts attitude and harmony,
and all urban music perfection." Simon Price, writing for The Independent, cited the album as "further evidence that
black pop is the avant garde."
In his review for The A.V. Club, Nathan Rabin asserted that the album establishes Aaliyah as a significant artist
unobscured by her collaborators. Rolling Stone magazine's Ernest Hardy called it "a near-flawless declaration of
strength and independence", and commended her for exploring her "fantasies and strengths." Craig Seymour, writing
for Entertainment Weekly, praised its melodrama and opined that, apart from a few songs that stray from her musical
strengths, Aaliyah "skillfully portrays love as part woozy thrill, part pulse-racing terror." Slant Magazine's Sal
Cinquemani found her personality highlighted on every song and compared her to Janet Jackson, but with better and
more arousing metaphors. Joshua Clover of Spin viewed it as her most profound work and wrote that she makes "art"
out of Timbaland and Static's "formal finesse" by "investing sound schemes with urgency and emotional intricacy".
In a mixed review, Connie Johnson of the Los Angeles Times found Aaliyah musically safe and felt that its lyrics
lack the depth and "personal revelation that gives music some immediacy." NME magazine's John Mulvey found it
"graceful" and "satisfying rather than extraordinary" and said that, although it is redeemed by Static's consistent
songwriting, Timbaland should have contributed more than three songs. Like Mulvey, Q magazine remarked that it
is an album of decent rather than innovative music with some filler. Robert Christgau gave the album a three-star
honorable mention, indicating "an enjoyable effort consumers attuned to its overriding aesthetic or individual vision
may well treasure." In his column for The Village Voice, he cited "We Need a Resolution" and "U Got Nerve" as
highlights and called Aaliyah "a slave to her beats, but a proud slave".

Commercial performance
The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling 187,000 copies in the week of August 4, 2001.
Although it was the highest sales week of Aaliyah's career, it initially sold slower than her previous album One in a
Million. Blackground and Virgin, which had invested heavily in the album's performance, wanted a single with a
high chart placement to help increase the album's sales.[6] "We Need a Resolution" had been released as the lead
single on April 13, but underperformed on radio and only reached number fifty-nine on the Billboard Hot 100.[6] In
August, Aaliyah shot a music video for "More Than a Woman" in Los Angeles and then travelled to the Bahamas to
shoot a video for "Rock the Boat". But after its completion, she and several crew members who were returning to the
United States died in a plane crash on August 25. Blackground executives were uncertain when they would release
the album's next single and video.
The album's sales skyrocketed after Aaliyah's death. Before her death, its sales had been diminishing since the
album's release in July, and stood at more than 447,000 copies sold. News of her death was reported on the last day
of Nielsen SoundScan's sales tracking week, during which Aaliyah sold 62,000 copies, a 41.5% increase from its past
week's sales. The following week, it sold 305,500 copies and ascended from number nineteen to number one on the
Billboard 200. It was the album's highest sales week, and marked the first time a recording artist climbed to number
one posthumously since John Lennon in 1980 with his album Double Fantasy. It was also Aaliyah's only album to
top any of Billboard's charts. The album sold more than one million copies by September 19, and 2.06 million copies
by February 25, 2002. Aaliyah spent 68 weeks on the Billboard 200 and, by December 2009, had sold 2.6 million
copies.
After ending their deal with Virgin in November 2001, Blackground wanted to send the video for "More Than a
Woman" to domestic outlets, but it required both labels to work together. Blackground subsequently moved to
Universal Records, and the video was first aired in Europe. In the United Kingdom, "More Than a Woman" was
released as a single on January 7, 2002, and entered the UK Singles Chart at number one, while Aaliyah re-entered
the UK Albums Chart at number sixty-five; it had originally entered the chart at number twenty-five on July 28,
2001. Two weeks after the single reached number one, the album jumped 17 spots to number five on January 27,
2002. It ultimately charted for 31 weeks in the UK. In France, Aaliyah peaked at number nine and charted for 33
weeks. It also reached number nine in both Germany and the Netherlands, where it charted for 41 and 46 weeks,
respectively.
Accolades
Aaliyah was named one of the 10 best albums of the year by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Time magazine.
The latter publication called Aaliyah "a siren of subtlety, never wailing when a whisper would do", and who
"blended genres with alluring ease." NME ranked the album number 39 on their year-end best albums list. Aaliyah
was named the best album of 2001 by Slant Magazine. The publication's editor Sal Cinquemani called it
"quintessential rhythm and blues, encompassing the boundless energy of Prince and the sexual revelation of a
disco-era Diana Ross ... a varied yet seamless R&B masterpiece." The album finished 73rd in the Pazz & Jop, an
annual critics' poll run by The Village Voice. Poll creator Robert Christgau wrote that Aaliyah finally "develop[ed]
material nobody can deny" on "a good album." Aaliyah also finished 37th in the annual poll run by German music
magazine Spex.
For the album, Aaliyah was posthumously awarded an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Female Artist. At the
2002 American Music Awards, it won in the category of Favorite R&B/Soul Album. In 2002, Aaliyah received a
Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Album. "Rock the Boat" was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal
Performance. "More Than a Woman" was nominated in the same category in 2003.
Aaliyah was ranked number 66 on GQ's 2005 list of the "100 Coolest Albums in the World". Stylus Magazine
ranked it number 47 on their list of the "Top 50 Albums of 2000–2005"; the publication's David Drake ranked it
Aaliyah 43
number eight on his list. Vibe included the album as one of their "150 Essential Albums of the Vibe Era" in 2007. In
2010, Aaliyah was named the 72nd best album of the 2000s decade by Slant Magazine.
Legacy
Along with her burgeoning film career, the album was a part of Aaliyah's breakout year in 2001. In a retrospective
review, Steve Huey of Allmusic cited it as her "most accomplished album" and wrote that it "completed the singer's
image overhaul into a sensual yet sensitive adult." Allmusic's senior editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine called it "a
statement of maturity and a stunning artistic leap forward", while BBC Music's Daryl Easlea viewed that it made
Aaliyah's two previous accomplished albums "look like exercises in juvenilia". According to Quentin B. Huff of
PopMatters, she had never used her singing to complement her music's innovative production before with as much
variety, conviction, and success as on Aaliyah, which he said is also known as "The Red Album" because of its red
artwork. Huff believed that the album showed the growing rapport between Aaliyah and her collaborators, and
disproved questions about how she would continue recording music while broadening her profile. In The Rolling
Stone Album Guide (2004), Keith Harris asserted that "Aaliyah had grown from studio puppet to a powerful R&B
archetype—a more self-aware Ronnie Spector for a time that requires more self-awareness of its young adults."[3]
Before her death, Aaliyah had planned to embark on the largest concert tour of her career in support of the album.
Her recording sessions for Aaliyah produced many leftover tracks that were posthumously archived by Blackground
and mostly left unreleased because of internal conflict and legal complications between the label, Aaliyah's family,
and producers. The compilation album I Care 4 U was released in 2002 and featured six previously unreleased songs
from the sessions.
Aaliyah's re-emergence with the album in mid-2001 had coincided with a period of peak activity in contemporary
R&B, as well as the popularity of neo soul. Erlewine called Aaliyah "one of the strongest urban soul records of its
time", and The Guardian cited it as the peak of R&B's golden age at the "turn of the century". According to the
newspaper's lead critic Alexis Petridis, Aaliyah recorded her most engaging music in a year when R&B and hip hop
demonstrated the most creativity in music. The Guardian's Rebecca Nicholson argued that "Timbaland hasn't come
close to creating anything as sonically stunning since" and attributed his subsequent commercial success with Justin
Timberlake and Nelly Furtado to the album. Although he believes it "redefines the category", Jon Caramanica of
Vibe wrote that Aaliyah "may be the best soul album of the young millenium" and called its music "daring in
construction, gorgeous from conception ... damn near post-R&B." Eve Barlow of Q magazine credited the album for
"creating a blueprint that can be heard across pop music today" with acts such as Beyoncé Knowles, The Weeknd,
and The xx.

Ultimate Aaliyah is the second compilation album dedicated to late R&B singer Aaliyah. It was released on 10 May
2005 in the UK, Australia, and Japan (as Special Edition: Rare Tracks and Visuals). It includes two CDs and one
DVD video disc.
The first compact disc is a greatest hits collection, including all of Aaliyah's significant U.S. hits (in their LP
versions) and two of her minor UK hits, but leaves out her top ten R&B hit, "Come Over" (#9 Billboard Hot
R&B/Hip-Hop Songs); one of her minor U.S. hits; and the rest of her minor UK hits, such as "Age Ain't Nothing But
a Number" (#75 U.S. Billboard Hot 100), "Journey to the Past" from the film Anastasia (#22 UK Top 40, #28
Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks), "Down with the Clique" (#33 UK Top 40), "The Thing I Like" from the
film A Low Down Dirty Shame (#33 UK Top 40), and "Are You Ready?" from the film Sunset Park (#42 Billboard
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay).
The second disc is entitled Are You Feelin' Me? It contains material from soundtracks and from studio albums by
labelmate Timbaland. The title track was released as a single in the UK to promote the album but failed to chart. Are
You Feelin' Me? was also made available as a standalone download, allowing purchasers to obtain the rarities
without duplicating the Greatest Hits.
The bonus DVD runs for sixty minutes, and features The Aaliyah Story – a documentary compiled of promo clips,
interviews, and special features, including MTV special, MTV News Now: The Life of Aaliyah, a Tribute to Aaliyah,
Aaliyah's VH1 Behind the Music installment, and her E! True Hollywood Story episode.
Ultimate Aaliyah debuted at #32 on the UK Albums Chart, with 20,000 copies sold. It has sold over 1.4 million
copies worldwide.[1]
Special Edition: Rare Tracks and Visuals was released two months later, and included the songs "Are You Feelin'
Me?" and "Messed Up" as its first two tracks – as on the second disc of Ultimate Aaliyah – plus remixes of "Rock
the Boat", "More Than a Woman", and "Try Again". The DVD contains the same documentary as Ultimate Aaliyah.

"Back & Forth" is the debut single performed by singer Aaliyah for her debut studio album Age Ain't Nothing but a
Number. The song was written and produced by R&B singer R. Kelly, and chronicles a teenage girl's excitement to
celebrate the weekend by going to a party and having fun with her friends. The music video for the song was shot in
her hometown of Detroit and features Aaliyah and Kelly performing in a gym with her real-life friends from high
school. Kelly performs the rap in the song.
The song was released as the album's lead single in early 1994 (see 1994 in music), and certified gold by the RIAA
on June 9, 1994.[1] It spent three weeks at number-one on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart, and peaked at
number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her first single to hit the top-ten. The single was ranked second on the
year-end chart of Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs.[2] The single also went top-ten in Canada.

"Got to Give It Up" 73
"Got to Give It Up" is a song by American music artist Marvin Gaye. Written by the singer and produced by Art
Stewart as a response to Gaye's record label to perform disco music, it was released in March of 1977.
Upon its release, it topped three different Billboard charts and also became a worldwide success. Gaye sometimes
used the song to open up his live concert shows. The song has been covered by several acts.
Background
Throughout 1976, Marvin Gaye's popularity was still at a high in America and abroad, but the singer struggled
throughout the year due to pending lawsuits from former band mates. Divorce court proceedings between Gaye and
first wife Anna Gordy had put a strain on Gaye. Financial difficulties almost led to imprisonment for the singer when
Gordy accused him of failing to pay child support payments for their only child, son Marvin Pentz Gaye III.
To relieve Gaye from his debt, his European concert promoter Jeffrey Kruger booked the singer on a lengthy
European tour, his first since 1967. Gaye began the tour in the United Kingdom where he had a strong fan base
dating back to his early career in the 1960s. His performances there were given rave reviews. One of the shows,
filmed at London's Palladium, was recorded for a live album, later released as Live at the London Palladium, in the
spring of 1977. Around the same time, Gaye's label Motown tried to get the artist to record in the current sound of
the times, disco music. Gaye criticized the music, claiming it lacked substance and vowed against recording in the
genre. His label mate Diana Ross had recorded her first disco song, "Love Hangover". The song's producer Hal
Davis debated over giving that song to either Ross or Gaye. After working over the song, he went with Ross, and it
became her 4th solo number one hit. Motown struggled to get Gaye in the studio as Gaye focused on work on an
album (which would later be released as Here, My Dear, dedicated to Gaye's troubled first marriage). After months
of holding off from recording anything resembling disco, the singer set upon writing a song parodying a disco
setting.
Production
The first recording session for "Got to Give It Up", originally titled "Dancing Lady", was on December 13, 1976.
Influenced by the Johnnie Taylor hit, "Disco Lady", Gaye was inspired to create his answer song to Taylor's hit. To
help set up a "disco" atmosphere, Gaye hired Motown producer and engineer Art Stewart to oversee the song's
production. Gaye and Stewart brought in several musicians and Gaye's friends and family (mainly his brother
Frankie, sister Zeola and girlfriend Janis Hunter) to Gaye's recording studio complex, Marvin's Room. From
December 14–17, 1976, Gaye performed the lead vocal track, instrumentation (which included Gaye, Fernando
Harkness, Johnny McGhee, Frankie Beverly and Bugsy Wilcox and Funk Brother member Jack Ashford) and
background vocals. In the song, Gaye added background vocals from his brother and his girlfriend. During the
second half of the song, the song introduces vocal layered doo-wop styled scatting from Gaye and produced a
funk-influenced vamp. Fernando Harkness performs a tenor saxophone solo in the second half of the song.
Gaye recorded his vocals on the first date of sessions, adding instrumentation on the following day, and then adding
other effects in the latter two days, mixing it by January 1977. Influenced by the vocal chatter on his previous hit,
"What's Going On", Gaye decided to create a party scene outside the recording studio where different voices are
heard either greeting each other or partying. At one point during the song, a female voice can be heard yelping and
screaming in joy. The voice was later confirmed to be that of Gaye's baby sister Zeola. Gaye is also heard on the
track greeting people and laughing while mingling in with the crowd. During the bridge, Gaye is heard yelling, "Say
Don! Hey man, I didn't know you was in here!" The "Don" was later confirmed as Soul Train host Don Cornelius,
who was one of Gaye's close friends. Gaye overlapped the party sounds over and over, making a loop. In the second
half of the song, Gaye sings mainly the initial title, "dancing lady" over and over while a saxophone is playing a solo.
All the background vocals on the second part of the song were from Gaye himself. Gaye also plays percussion, RMI
synthesizer bass and keyboards on the song. In the second half, he can be heard playing on a glass bottle halfway
filled with grapefruit juice. L.T.D. guitarist Johnny McGhee added guitar. McGhee and Frankie Beverly were the
"Got to Give It Up" 74
only non-band mates featured on the song playing instruments. Beverly also added assorted percussion.
Composition
Despite its later reputation as a "disco classic", the style of "Got to Give It Up" is mainly funk with jazz-funk
elements. After the start of the song, which includes vocal chatter, the song kicks off with a standard drum beat:
kick, snare and hi-hat while synthesizers are heard soon afterwards. After nearly a minute, Gaye's vocals appear in a
falsetto, which he sings in for most of the song. In the second half, after harmonizing in falsetto, Gaye's tenor vocals
take over.
The song's story line focuses on a man who is a wallflower when he comes into a nightclub nervous to perform on
the dance floor. But after a minute of this, the music takes over and his body starts to lose any inhibitions. Midway
through he finally cuts loose before shouting the chant "let's dance, let's shout, get funky what it's all about!" proving
the power of the dance can overtake any shyness. The dance is mainly focused on Gaye and a suitable female partner
he seeks. In the second half, a funkier jazz arrangement is helped in guitar, bass and a tambourine. After this, he
continues chanting until the song fades.
Legacy
Gaye's song became an important influence and motivation for Michael Jackson, who was searching to write a
potential hit after The Jacksons had struggled with previous offerings. Jackson later wrote, with brother Randy,
"Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)", taking and altering bits of Gaye's chant, "let's dance, let's shout, get
funky what it's all about." The song, "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough", written solely by Jackson and recorded the
same year as "Shake Your Body", took even more of Gaye's approach with "Got to Give It Up", using percussive
instruments and a continued funk guitar riff. Jackson sings most of the song in falsetto. Jackson's producer Quincy
Jones added in strings used during the instrumental intro and a synthesizer guitar during the song's bridge. Much like
the party chatter in "Got to Give It Up", Jackson added in vocal chatter, however, the chatter would later be debated
as two people having a verbal argument while the tape was recording (a woman could be heard hollering "man I hate
your ass anyway!"). Jackson and Jones allowed the argument in the recording.
"Got to Give It Up" has been featured in the films Menace II Society (1993), Boogie Nights (1997), Summer of Sam
(1999), Charlie's Angels (2000), Barbershop (2002), This Christmas (2007), Eat Pray Love (2010) and Paul (2011).

Aaliyah's version of "Got to Give It Up" failed to chart in the U.S. when it was commercially released there in
January 1997 (although it was not sent to radio stations for airplay, a 12-inch vinyl single was released to record
stores), but it was a minor hit in the UK peaking at number 37 in the UK Singles Chart. It reached number 34 in New
Zealand. The single's B-side, "No Days Go By", was one of Aaliyah's few self-compositions.
A new remix of Aaliyah's "Got to Give It Up" (without Slick Rick's vocals) was included on her posthumous 2002
compilation album I Care 4 U. The video is a re-edit of the original. A music video was directed by Paul Hunter. The
video was edited to both the album version with Slick Rick, and a remix, without Slick Rick's vocals.

"One in a Million"
"One in a Million"
Single by Aaliyah
Recorded [1]
1996
at Pyramid Studios
(Ithaca, New York)
Length 4:30
Producer(s) Timbaland
"One in a Million" is a song by American R&B recording artist Aaliyah from her second studio album of the same
name (1996). The song was the third main single from One in a Million following "Got to Give It Up", but in North
America the song was the second single, because "Got to Give It Up" was not released until 1998 in the U.S.
Background
"One in a Million" is a R&B song written by Missy Elliott and Timbaland, who also produced the song.
An R&B slow jam, "One in a Million" was considered quite atypical and innovative at the time of its release. The
song was the first major display of Timbaland's early drum-skitter-style of programming, with its rambunctious
influence owing dues to the then burgeoning drum-n-bass movement in Europe. This frantic drum programming
juxtaposed against the rather tranquil manner of the vocal arrangement and the remaining instrumentation was, then,
immediately distinguishable from most mainstream R&B/pop. Though Timbaland, Missy Elliott and Aaliyah had
been previously at work in the industry for some time, the song was a breakthrough/name-making moment for the lot
of them. "One in a Million" was recorded at Pyramid Studios in Ithaca, New York.
"One in a Million" 79
Chart performance
The song became a U.S. hit on the Billboard R&B charts, reaching number one on the R&B Airplay Chart for six
weeks; it also became a U.S. airplay hit based on its R&B and Rhythmic airplay, propelling the song to peak within
the top thirty of the Hot 100 Airplay Chart at number twenty-five. It was also a top twenty hit in the UK, reaching
number fifteen as part of a double A-side with the re-release of "If Your Girl Only Knew".
Music video
The music video for "One in a Million" was directed by Paul Hunter in the autumn of 1996. An extended version of
the video was used for the remix which features Ginuwine, Timbaland, and Missy Elliott in 1997. The video starts
with Aaliyah lying on top of a black Ford Mustang with Missy Elliott and Timbaland sitting inside of it. Soon,
several reporters and fans rush to the car. Then the scene switches to a dark room where Aaliyah is sitting as
Ginuwine approaches her. The scene bears a striking resemblance to the set of 12 Monkeys. In another scene she is
watching him in an off white-colored room via security camera. The scene shifts to a completely white room where
Aaliyah is dancing with another male and then to the scene where Ginuwine is looking at the security camera. In the
latter scene, Aaliyah enters the room and reveals a tattoo of her name on Ginuwine's arm. Once again, the scene goes
back to the dark room, but this time Aaliyah is standing up and performing in a white bodysuit. The video ends with
Aaliyah riding in a motorcycle with eighteen-year-old DEALZ, son of Jackie Jackson.

(1997) (1997) (1998)
"Hot Like Fire" is a song written by Missy Elliott and Tim "Timbaland" Mosley for Aaliyah's second album, One in
a Million (see 1996 in music). It is the fifth release overall and the official fourth single in North America (see 1997
in music).
The song was released as part of a double A-side single with "The One I Gave My Heart To".
"Hot Like Fire" 85
Background
"Hot Like Fire" was originally recorded for Aaliyah's second studio album, One in a Million. When it was chosen to
be the album's fourth and final single in the US, the "Timbaland's Groove Mix" was used for the single release
instead of the album version.
Composition
"Hot Like Fire" is R&B/hip hop soul Timbaland's ad-lib is sampled from Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner". The lyrics
talk about a relationship between a female and a male; Aaliyah sings that she wants her significant other to wait "a
little while longer" before getting intimate, but when she is ready she will "take him higher". Aaliyah performs most
of the song, while Timbaland contributes ad libs and Missy Elliott chants "I'ma make it hot like fire" as the outro.
Promotion
Aaliyah performed "Hot Like Fire" at Summer Jam 1997 sponsored by New York City radio station Hot 97 on
August 10, 1997 [1]. She also performed the song on the short-lived talk show, VIBE.
Music video
The music video was directed by Lance "Un" Rivera. Fatima Robinson directed the choreography. Missy Elliott,
Timbaland, Playa, Changing Faces, Lil' Kim, and Junior M.A.F.I.A. made cameos in the video.
The video starts with a large number of people in an urban neighborhood on a very hot summer day. Aaliyah drives a
red car with a fire engine. The setting quickly changes to night as Aaliyah gets out of the car to perform the chorus
on a steamy stage with sparks in the background. During the second verse, Aaliyah is seen dancing with the crowd.
Aaliyah returns to the stage with the dancers to perform the chorus again. Timbaland performs his verse and Missy
Elliott performs her verse.

"4 Page "Hot Like Fire"/"The One I Gave My Heart "Journey to the
Letter" To" Past"
(1997) (1997) (1998)
"The One I Gave My Heart To" is a R&B/pop song by American singer Aaliyah. The song is the sixth and final
single from Aaliyah's second album One in a Million. The song was written by Diane Warren and the album version
was produced by Daryl Simmons, while the single version was produced by Guy Roche. The song is a ballad where
the protagonist asks how could the man she gave her heart to be the same one who hurt her feelings so harshly. The
song was released on September 16, 1997 as a double A-side with "Hot Like Fire".
"The One I Gave My Heart To" debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in the issue week of October 4, 1997 at
number 24 and went on to peak at number 9,[1] making it the highest-charting single from the album. In the same
issue week, the song debuted on the U.S. Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at number 18 and went on to peak at
number 7.[2] The song was certified Gold by the RIAA on October 21, 1997.[3]
"The One I Gave My Heart To" 88
Composition
Written by Diane Warren, "The One I Gave My Heart To" is a power ballad with more prominent pop influences,
which are more apparent in the single version, in contrast to her previous works which are more leaning towards
R&B and hip hop. The song is composed in the key of G major[4] and follows the verse-chorus form with Aaliyah
doing improvisations at the ad-libbed last verse, marking the climax of the song.
Like "Hot Like Fire", the song was remixed for its single release. The pop-oriented single version has a key change
to A♭ major and a dynamic shift towards rock power balladry instrumentation after the second chorus while the
RnB-oriented album version maintains its original key and style. Aaliyah's vocal range spans from F#3 to F5 in the
single version of the song. The song is arguably Aaliyah's most powerful vocal performance in which she showcased
her belting range as she usually used her falsetto and lower register in most of her compositions. Warren spoke
highly of Aaliyah's vocal performance, stating that "She could go where the Whitneys went. She wailed on that
single I wrote for her. I write songs that challenge singers, and she rose to the occasion."
B-side
"The One I Gave My Heart To" was first released as a double A-side single with "Hot Like Fire" in 1997 as a maxi
CD single and regular sized CD single. The B-side for the maxi single release was "Death of a Playa". This song
features Aaliyah's brother, Rashad Haughton and was written by the two siblings. It was produced by Timbaland.
Earlier that year, "Death of a Playa" was used as the B-side for "4 Page Letter".
Music video
The music video for "The One I Gave My Heart To" was directed by Darren Grant, and uses the single version of the
song, keeping the second half of the first verse which is normally cut for radio airplay. Throughout the video there
are two main settings and another one at the end. In one setting, Aaliyah is inside a house with wooden floors and
walls. In the house, there is a room with nothing but a mirror on the floor. With this mirror Aaliyah is able to see
other scenes of the video. The second shows Aaliyah sitting on wooden bench in a forest setting. In the final scene,
Aaliyah performs outside during a rain shower.

"We Need a Resolution" 90
Genre R&B
Length 4:02
Producer(s) Timbaland
"We Need a Resolution" is a song performed by American recording artist Aaliyah. It was written by Static Major
and Timbaland, who also produced and contributed a featured rap. The song was released on April 13, 2001, as the
lead single for Aaliyah's self-titled 2001 album Aaliyah.
The song was a moderate success internationally. "We Need a Resolution" reached the top 20 of the UK Singles
Chart and the top 30 in Canada. In October 2011, NME placed it at number 119 on its list "150 Best Tracks of the
Past 15 Years". It was placed 21st on Slant Magazine's "Best of the Aughts: Singles" list and 30th on Stylus
Magazine's "Top 50 Singles: 2000-2005." The single and the music video was also ranked 8th and 6th, respectively,
on Slant Magazine's Best Singles and Music Videos of 2001 list.
Composition
"We Need a Resolution" has a sparse arrangement with stop-start drum patterns, hand claps, and a clarinet sample
from John Ottman's "Tricks of the Trade" from the score to the 1998 film Incognito. While this particular part of the
song is in 10/8 time signature, Timbaland used quantization to make the "We Need a Resolution" beat completely in
4/4. The song's lyrics maturely present two perspectives in a passive-aggressive relationship. Aaliyah's sinuously
sung concerns are playfully dismissed in Timbaland's featured rap.
"We Need a Resolution" 91
Music video
The music video for the song was directed by Paul Hunter from April 6–8, 2001 and premiered on BET's 106 &
Park and MTV's TRL on April 26, 2001. The video placed at #77 on the BET: Notarized top 100 videos of 2001, and
at number 30 on MTV's top 50 videos of 2001.
The video opens with Aaliyah sitting in a dark room in a black dress and also appearing on a TV screen performing
the first verse. Leading up to the chorus she can be seen laying on a glass bed with headphones on. During the
second verse and the next chorus Aaliyah is in a scene with a snake around her neck in a snake pit. As Timbaland's
rap verse begins he can be seen in a dark room wearing shades. Aaliyah performs a dance routine with other dancers
during Timbaland's verse. The video closes with Aaliyah in the dark bedroom scene again and Aaliyah with one of
the male dancers.

"Rock the Boat" 93
Genre R&B
Length 4:35
Producer(s) Keybeats
"Rock the Boat" is a song by American recording artist Aaliyah. It was written by Static Major, Eric Seats and
Rapture Stewart for her 2001 self-titled album Aaliyah. "Rock the Boat" was released as a single in January 2002 in
the United States and May 2002 in the United Kingdom. Prior to its release as a single, "Rock the Boat" charted as
an "album cut" and peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the week of January 5. The song stayed on the
chart for twenty-five weeks.[1]
Aaliyah initially started promotion for the expected second single "More Than a Woman", but the single was pushed
back because her label felt "Rock the Boat" was a summer single that needed to be released.Wikipedia:Citation
needed "Rock the Boat" was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 44th Annual Grammy
Awards ceremony.
Composition
"Rock the Boat" features an atmospheric groove, hypnotic rhythms, and fluctuating instrumentation such as
synthesizer effects. Lyrically, its female narrator instructs a lover on how to please her sexually and equates her
erotic high to a drug high: "Work it in the middle / Change positions for me / Now stroke it, baby ... I feel like I'm on
dope". The words "high" and "dope" were censored on MTV because of the drug connotation. In an issue of Vibe
magazine, it was revealed the song was written at least two years before its actual release, but never recorded
because her label didn't think she was ready for a song with sensual lyrics that "Rock the Boat"
entailed.Wikipedia:Citation needed

Reception
"Rock the Boat" was included on Channel V's Vault's countdown for the top 10 beach scenes in music videos and
became the first video to be played twice as a "New Joint of the Day" on BET's music countdown show, 106 & Park.
After making the countdown 65 times, the video was retired and inducted into 106 & Park's "Hall of Fame". The
follow-up "More Than a Woman" made the number-one spot after "Rock the Boat" was retired. "Rock the Boat"
appeared at #2 on the BET: Notarized Top 100 Videos of 2001.
Chart performance
On the Billboard Hot 100, the song entered on the chart September 8, 2001 at number 57[2] and peaked at number 14
in its twelfth week.[3] The song stayed on the chart for twenty-five weeks.[4] The song reached the top 20 of Belgium
(Wallonia), Netherlands and United Kingdom. "Rock the Boat" still receives heavy rotation on worldwide radio
stations among other Aaliyah hits.
Promotion
Aaliyah appeared on BET's 106 & Park on August 21, 2001 and announced the video shoot would start the following
day, August 22, 2001, and the video would be released in early September in time for Back to School. She also
announced that More Than a Woman would be released back-to-back.
Music video
The music video for the song was directed by Hype Williams.Wikipedia:Citation needed It features Aaliyah walking
on a beach having been inspired by the poem "Footprints", also dancing on a yacht, and on a beach in Marsh
Harbour and swimming in a pool in Miami which appears to be the ocean. Aaliyah appears to be dancing on water,
in a CGI scene. The dance routine was choreographed by Aaliyah's close friend Fatima Robinson. Dancers in the
video include Carmit Bachar, Denosh Bennett, Nadine Ellis and Electrik Red members Binkie and Lesley.[5] Filming
started on August 22, 2001 and made its world premiere on BET's Access Granted on October 9, 2001.
On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah and eight others were killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas after filming the music
video for "Rock the Boat". The investigation of the crash found that the plane was over its total gross weight by 700
pounds and was loaded with one more passenger than it was allowed to carry. The pilot, Luis Morales III, was not
licensed at the time of the accident, and had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system.

Kingdom.
Aaliyah performed the song on Live with Regis & Kelly on July 18, 2001 and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on

Music video
The music video for "More Than a Woman" was directed by Dave Meyers and filmed in Los Angeles, California in
early August 2001 before the video shoot for "Rock the Boat". The video starts with a shot of West 4th Street in Los
Angeles, looking towards the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Aaliyah riding a 2001 model Triumph Speed Triple in
the wrong direction when the camera zooms inside the exhaust pipe and shows Aaliyah dancing in a white Chanel
catsuit with other female dancers between the pistons. Between cuts she is riding the motorcycle and doing wheelies
and in another scene standing in front of a headlight with her back against the camera. Later in the video, Aaliyah is
dancing with co-ed dancers, wearing leather pants, gloves, and boots, and a black tank-top. At the end, a silhouette of
Aaliyah on her motorcycle wearing Dainese Gear is placed in front of sunset with the words "In Loving Memory of
Aaliyah" above. British music producer Mark Ronson appears in the video as a DJ, along with then girlfriend
Rashida Jones and her sister, Kidada.
The video premiered on January 7, 2002 and landed on top of BET's 106 & Park countdown right after "Rock The
Boat'" was retired from the countdown. In Germany, the music video ranked several times at number one on the
interactive voting show Select MTV on MTV. "More Than a Woman" also landed at number 11 on BET: Notarized
Top 100 Videos of 2002. It was voted by the British public as "Best Video" and received an award at the 2002 UK

"I Care 4 U" is a song by American R&B recording artist Aaliyah. It was written by Missy Elliott and producer
Timbaland. The song was originally recorded by Aaliyah for her 1996 album One in a Million, but scrapped after
that album's completion.
"I Care 4 U", a romantic R&B ballad, was first featured on Aaliyah's self-titled third album in 2001. As a non-single
album track, it charted for 20 weeks and reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2002. The song was
released as a radio single in 2003 in promotion of Aaliyah's posthumuous compilation album I Care 4 U (2002).
Background
"I Care 4 U" was written by singer-songwriter Missy Elliott and Timbaland, who also produced the song, and
recorded at Magic Mix Studios and Music Grinder Studios in Los Angeles. Aaliyah originally recorded the song for
her 1996 album One in a Million, but it was completed after the album had finished post-production, and she chose
to scrap it for her next album. The song is a soft romantic R&B ballad whose female narrator, according to Aaliyah,
says "don't cry, I'll wipe your tears. I love you, just give me the chance to show you."
"I Care 4 U" 102
Chart performance
"I Care 4 U" debuted at number 75 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs as an "album cut" in the week of June
1, 2002. It charted for 20 weeks on the Hot 100 Airplay (Radio Songs). It peaked as an "album cut" at number 16 on
the Billboard Hot 100 in the week of October 16; it spent 20 total weeks on that chart as well. Along with "More
Than a Woman" and "Rock the Boat", the song helped give Aaliyah a strong presence on the radio following her
death in 2001.
"I Care 4 U" was released as a promotional recording for the compilation album of the same name in 2003. In April
2003, it was released as a 12-inch single with the B-side "Don't Worry".

Music sample
"Miss You" is a song by American recording artist Aaliyah. Written by Johnta Austin, Ginuwine and Teddy Bishop
in 1998 and initially recorded in 2000 for her self-titled third studio album (2001), the track remained unreleased.
Instead, it was later included on the posthumously released compilation album, I Care 4 U (2002), serving as its
leading single during the last quarter of 2002.
The ballad received positive reviews from contemporary music critics and achieved a strong charting throughout
Europe and other worldwide regions, reaching the top twenty in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, the
Netherlands, and Switzerland. On the US Billboard charts, the song peaked on top of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs
chart and reached number three on the Hot 100, becoming Aaliyah's highest-charting single after her 2000
number-one hit "Try Again" featuring Timbaland.
The music video for the song was directed by Darren Grant and featured tributes by Aaliyah's friends and
collaborators, including DMX, Missy Elliott, and Static Major. It received a nomination for Best R&B Video at the
2003 MTV Video Music Awards. Rapper Jay-Z made a tribute to Aaliyah using the "Miss You" instrumental and
chorus for its official remix version in Summer 2003.
"Miss You" 104
Background
"Miss You" was written by R&B singer Ginuwine, Johnta Austin and Teddy Bishop, while produced by the latter,[1]
and was originally crafted for Ginuwine's second studio album 100% Ginuwine (1999). While Aaliyah was recording
tracks for self-titled third album (2001) in the Manhattan Center Studios, she requested Austin and Bishop to play
her a couple of tracks they had produced with other artists, including "I Miss You" for which Ginuwine had already
lent his vocals. Bishop later commented, "She was like, 'I want to cut this record' [...] She got on the phone, called
him and said 'Hey I know you cut this record already, but I would love to cut it'." Ginuwine, who was a part writer
on the song, allowed her to cut her own version of it and the same night, Aaliyah re-recorded the whole track.
Though she reportedly wanted to put the song out herself, Blackground Records, her label, felt the song was no
"smash record" and thus, the song was left unused until her death in August 2001.
Reception
Slant Magazine called the single "Aaliyah-lite".[2] MusicOMH.com called the single the best new song of the album
as well as stating "poignant lyrics ... mix well with a thoughtful, reflective, laid back tune."[3] Allmusic—while
mentioning the single with the song "All I Need"—said that they "don't have the edge of her classic Timbaland
productions, but they stand up well — even when they're slotted next to the best songs of her career."[4]
It debuted at number fifty-five[5] on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number three. It was ranked eight on the
year-end chart of the Billboard Hot 100[6] and ranked three on the year-end chart of Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop
Songs. In the week of November 22, 2008, the song debuted at number thirty-eight on the Top Ringtone chart, over
five years after its original release.
Music video
The music video for the song was directed by Darren Grant and featured tributes by Aaliyah's friends and
collaborators, including DMX, Missy Elliott, Toni Braxton, Tweet, Static Major and various others. The video shot
in two locations Long Island City, New York, and Los Angeles, California. Tweet, Lil' Kim, Jaheim, and Lil' Jon
were among those who came to the Long Island shoot. Jamie Foxx, DMX, Quincy Jones, and Ananda Lewis were
some of the celebrities who appeared at the L.A. shoot.[7]
The music video begins with various artists saddened over Aaliyah's death with DMX delivering a message to his
dear friend Aaliyah with the words:
"Dearest, sweet Aaliyah, I have trouble accepting the fact that you’re gone... so I won’t. It’ll be like... we went for a
while without seeing each other. But I can understand why God would've wanted you close to Him, cause you were
truly an angel on earth... and in every special way.. I love you, and miss you”
Between cuts clips from Aaliyah's early videos and her cameos in other artists' videos were used. Aaliyah
merchandise (posters, jackets, and even a motorcycle) also appeared in the video. "Miss You" landed at #23 on BET:

Beek" by Algerian singer Warda Al-Jazairia and "No Respect" by Kool Moe Dee for a drum pattern. In the song,
Aaliyah expresses her view on how a man cannot trust his girlfriend and keeps on comparing her to his previous
lover, "Don't compare me to your last one/I can't help that she was a fast one, a sassy one/I'm a classy one". "Don't
Know What to Tell Ya" was another hit single for Aaliyah in Europe and Asia, peaking in the top forty in countries

Romeo Must Die is a 2000 American action film directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak in his directorial debut, and also
fight choreography by Corey Yuen. The film stars Jet Li, Aaliyah, Isaiah Washington, Russell Wong, Delroy Lindo,
Henry O, Anthony Anderson and DMX. The film was released in the United States on March 22, 2000.
"Are You Feelin' Me?" 113
It is considered Jet Li's breakout role in the English speaking American film industry.
The film's plot is similar to William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, but instead of the last name, the families feud
over race. The movie's setting was Oakland, California, but other than a few establishing shots, the film was entirely
shot in Vancouver, British Columbia. This film is the debut of R&B singer Aaliyah as an actress.
Plot
Po Sing (John Kit Lee) is waiting for someone unknown in an African American club when Kai (Russell Wong) and
his Asian henchmen come in and confront the owner of the club and his bouncers. After a brief fight, all are thrown
out by the owner before the meeting can take place. The next day, Po was found murdered by a bicycle kid.
Fearing retribution, real estate developer and gang leader Isaak O’Day (Delroy Lindo) arranges for his henchmen to
place security on both of his children. Meanwhile, Po’s brother, Han (Jet Li), learns of the murder in the Hong Kong
prison where he is serving time. After starting a fight in the mess hall, he escapes from prison by overpowering the
guards who took him to an isolation cell for punishment and disguising himself as one of them.
Eventually, Han makes his way to Oakland, where he learns that a gang war seems to have erupted between Black
and Asian gang families, including both O’Day and Han and Po’s father, Ch’u Sing (Henry O), even while the two
are apparently engaged in a joint business venture. He also learns that his brother called O’Day’s daughter Trish’s
(Aaliyah) record store the day before he was killed. After a chance encounter with her, he follows her and learns that
Po may have actually been calling Trish’s brother, Colin (DB Woodside).
At his brother’s funeral, Han confronts his estranged father, blaming him for failing to keep his promise to protect Po
after Han had helped them both flee to America to escape the Chinese authorities, an action which resulted in his
own imprisonment and disgraced status as a former police officer. Han learns that the war is apparently over control
of the properties along the Oakland waterfront. Meanwhile, O’Day also reveals to his son that the deal he is working
on will get their family out of the crime business for good, but that he must be careful. However, the apparent war
over territory is really a cover for the two sides secretly working together to put together a deal for ownership of a
new NFL franchise in Oakland.
Colin and his girlfriend are both killed by unseen assailants by being thrown out of his high rise apartment window.
As Han comforts Trish, he learns that Po had put together a list of businesses that were either destroyed or being
threatened with destruction for failing to sell their properties, and that Po was trying to contact Colin to warn him
about this. The two visit one of the few remaining properties on the list and learn that the owner, a Chinese man, and
his employees have been killed by a Chinese hit team. When Han confronts his father over this, he tries to deflect
suspicion by telling him Trish may have been involved.
It is revealed that both sides in the fake war are using violence and intimidation to force the owners of all the
waterfront properties to relinquish their rights over their properties. Trish and Han visit the last property on the list,
the nightclub where Po originally intended to meet Colin, O’Day’s chief lieutenant Mac and his goons kill the club’s
owner and kidnap both Trish and Han, taking them to separate locations. Han escapes by overpowering his guards.
Ch’u Sing has the other Chinese crime lords killed, ensuring that he will have control over their business interests.
O’Day, Ch’u Sing, and the developer arranging the NFL deal meet at the Oakland Men’s club to provide the deeds for
the properties they now control. Sing takes a multi-million dollar payment and leaves, but O’Day refuses his
payment, stating that his payment will be in the form of a share of ownership of the new franchise. He is betrayed,
however, by Mac, who threatens Trish to force O’Day to hand over the deeds to the developer. O'Day, enraged by
Mac's betrayal, attacks Mac but is grievously wounded in the process. Han arrives and pursues Mac to the roof of the
club. The developer escapes via helicopter, but not before losing all of the deeds after Mac fires repeatedly at the
helicopter. Mac reveals to Han that it was Ch’u Sing’s lieutenant Kai who had Po killed, just before Trish kills him.
At his father’s house, Han engages in a brutal fight with Kai, killing him after suffering burn injuries to his hands. He
then confronts his father, knowing now that his father had his own son killed "like running over a dog in the street"
"Are You Feelin' Me?" 114
for no other reason than that he was interfering with a business deal. He tells his father that he will answer for his
crimes, either to the American authorities or to the other Chinese families. As Han walks away, his father commits
suicide with a handgun. Han finds Trish waiting for him outside and the two walk away from the house together.

Production
According to the documentary The Slanted Screen, Han and Trish were supposed to have a kissing scene, which
explains the title of Romeo, but this was met with derision from a pre-screening with an urban audience. Jet Li stated
on his personal website that they had filmed both versions of the scene (with kiss and without), and decided to use
the one without instead because it would be "somewhat strange and awkward" for Han to have witness his father's
suicide and then to come out and kiss someone. The movie was filmed in 1999.
Reception
The critical reception was mixed to negative. The film currently has a 33% ("Rotten") rating from 91 reviews on
Rotten Tomatoes, with the critical consensus "In his second Hollywood movie, Jet Li impresses. Unfortunately,
when he's not on screen, the movie slows to a crawl. Though there's some spark between Jet and Aaliyah, there isn't
any threat of a fire. And as impressive as the action sequences are, some critics feel they are over-edited."
Box office
Romeo Must Die debuted at No.2 at the U.S. box office behind in 1999's Erin Brockovich. The film was produced
with a budget of US$25 million. In North America, Romeo Must Die was a box office success, earning a strong
$18,014,503 (2,641 theaters, $6,821 per screen average) in its opening weekend. Romeo Must Dies total North
American gross is $55,973,336. The film's worldwide box office gross is $91,036,760.

"Hot Like Fire"/"The One I Gave My Heart "Journey to the "Are You That
To" Past" Somebody?"
(1997) (1997) (1998)
"Journey to the Past" is a song by American R&B recording artist Aaliyah, from 20th Century Fox's 1997 animated
feature film, Anastasia. It was written by lyricist Lynn Ahrens and composer Stephen Flaherty, and originally
recorded by American actress and singer Liz Callaway in her role as the film's title character, Anastasia. Aaliyah's
pop rendition of the song is played over a portion of the film's end credits, and was released as a single from the
film's soundtrack album. "Journey to the Past" is a predominantly pop ballad that draws influence from
contemporary R&B music.
"Journey to the Past" has received mixed to positive reception, many praising Callaway's version, but criticizing
Aaliyah's pop rendition. The song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 70th
Academy Awards in 1998, but lost to "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic. The song was also nominated alongside
"Once Upon a December" for a Golden Globe Award in the same category, but again lost to the theme song from
Titanic. It became a moderately successful pop hit in the UK. The song did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100; it
only received minor adult contemporary airplay in the U.S. It stayed on the chart for only 4 weeks. The song was
released to U.S. adult contemporary radio on March 31, 1998 as the soundtrack's second single.
Reception
Critical reception for "Journey to the Past" has been generally mixed to positive. Erin McCarty of Epinions praised
the original Liz Callaway version of the song, saying Callaway "voices Anastasia with a clear-throated exuberance
and beauty that reminds me of Jodi Benson from The Little Mermaid." Her review of Aaliyah's pop rendition of the
song was more mixed: "...as is almost always the case with these animated musicals that produce radio hits, I prefer
the in-movie version." Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic gave a somewhat positive review of Aaliyah's
rendition, calling it a good version of a song that sounds better in its original form. Filmtracks called Callaway's
version of the song "attractive".
"Journey to the Past" 120
Music video
The music video begins in a modern-day American neighborhood on a seemingly warm day. Aaliyah is seen singing
in the windows of a small grocery store and on the street where children are playing. Tying in to the theme of going
back to the past, Aaliyah goes back and forth from the real modern-day world to the animated world of Russia in the
1920s,[1] the time in which Anastasia is set. She is then seen in several of the movie's iconic scenes such as
balancing on a log with Anastasia behind her, out in the snow where the "Journey to the Past" song is featured in the
film, in the ballroom in the "Once Upon a December" sequence, ascending the lift in the Eiffel Tower (the "Paris
Holds the Key (To Your Heart)" scene) and on stage in the Russian ballet scene. The fountains of Jardins du
Trocadéro can be seen briefly. The music video ends with her sitting on the rooftop seemingly overlooking the final
scene in which Dimitri and Anya kiss and finally on the clouds above St. Petersburg with the children.

"Are You That Somebody?" is a Grammy nominated single performed by American singer Aaliyah, recorded for
the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack. The song was written and composed by Static Major, who also sang backing vocals, and
Timbaland, who, in addition to writing the song, produced and performed a guest rap for it. The song was sent to
U.S. Pop radio stations on September 29, 1998 (see 1998 in music). The song samples the sound of a baby cooing
from Perrey and Kingsley's 1966 hit "Countdown at 6" and D. Train's 1982 dance classic "You're the One for Me".
The song was listed 387th on The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born, a list of songs compiled by Blender
magazine.[1] It was also ranked 18th on Spin magazine's Top 20 Singles of the 90's, and 5th on The Village Voice's
1998 Pazz & Jop critics' poll. Pitchfork Media included the song at number 8 on their Top 200 Tracks of the 90s.[2]
This song earned Aaliyah a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
"Are You That Somebody?" 122
Music video
The music video for "Are You That Somebody?" was directed by Mark Gerard, and with choreography by Fatima
Robinson. It begins with Timbaland and a crew of men riding motorcycles to a cave where Aaliyah and other women
are waiting. As Timbaland and the crew arrive, a hologram of a metal door seals the opening of the cave. The men
notice that the seal is a hologram and drive through it. Inside the underground cave clips of Dr. Dolittle are projected
on several walls in the background.
As Aaliyah's first verse starts she holds a large bird on her arm and everyone begins to perform the choreography.
There are scenes with just the women dancing, just the men dancing, both the women and men dancing, and Aaliyah
performing alone. There are no scenes with just the men and Aaliyah dancing. Also shown is Timbaland rapping
with the group Playa in the background. The video ends with Aaliyah and the dancers performing a flamenco dance.
The video was retired on MTV's TRL and was the third most-played clip on MTV in 1998.[4]
There are two versions of the video, one with the footages of Dr. Dolittle on the wall and second, without these
scenes and with a little different editing (this version was released on I Care 4 U DVD). The video was shot in a real
cave at Griffith Park in Los Angeles.
Reception
In its album guide, Rolling Stone commented that the song "remains one of '90s' R&B's most astounding moments."
Remix
The unofficial remix features rappers Skillz (Mad Skillz during that time), Danja Mowf, & Lonnie B. of the group
Supafriendz & Timbaland.
Charts performance
"Are You That Somebody?" was in the midst of its chart run when Billboard changed its policy to allow airplay-only
singles to chart on the Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts. It climbed to number four on the Hot 100 Airplay
chart and number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.
In New Zealand, it jumped from number forty-three to number one; the song with biggest jump to number-one of
that year.[5] In the Netherlands, it peaked at number one and stayed in the chart for twenty-two weeks; it also became
one of her most successful songs there.[6] The song was also successful in: Belgium, where it peaked at number
forty-two;[7][8] Switzerland, where it peaked at number seven;[9] and Germany, where it peaked at number thirty-one.
It also reached the top twenty in the United Kingdom, becoming her highest-charting hit at that point in her career.
The song also reached the top 10 in Canada.

Aaliyah chronology
DMX chronology
"Come Back in One Piece" is the third official single from the Romeo Must Die soundtrack. The song was
performed by Aaliyah and features a guest appearance by DMX. The song was not a Top 40 hit single in the U.S.,
though it was a minor urban contemporary hit. In Europe, "Come Back in One Piece" and "I Don't Wanna" were
released together as double A-side single.
Song information
The single was not successful on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, but reached the top 40 on U.S. R&B charts.
The song sampled "Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk" by Parliament, from their 1977 LP Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo
Syndrome. The same song was sampled by N.W.A. in 1991 for their song "Niggaz 4 Life" from the album of the
same name.
No uncensored version of the song is available very easily, as the album which it appeared on censored all
profanities (unusual since the film which it served as a soundtrack to had a lot of profanities, and was rated R). Also,
Aaliyah's discography in general has been free of explicit lyrics. All profanities were replaced with typical ad libs
from DMX songs, such as "what?" and "come on!". The US promotional CD single features the explicit version of
the song.
"Come Back in One Piece" 128
Music video
The video was filmed in Yonkers, New York. The video features Aaliyah and DMX in an urban setting. At the
beginning the two pose for pictures against a brick wall, with Aaliyah mouthing DMX's opening intro. DMX appears
at a convenience store fighting other men. Aaliyah appears in three scenes singing. In one she is laying on a bed with
her dog, another walking down a sidewalk with a pit bull, and the other with her sitting beside DMX. In between
cuts, the scene shifts to children sitting beside televisions with scenes from Romeo Must Die. At the end children and
adults alike, stand in front of murals of Aaliyah and DMX. The Video landed at #10 on BET: Notarized Top 100
Videos of 2000. The video was directed by Little X.
