SYLLABUS IN MATHEMATICS 4
Academic Year: 2023-2024

I. GENERAL OBJECTIVES
1. Understand the key concepts and skills involving numbers and number sense (whole
numbers up to 10,000 and the four fundamental operations including money, ordinal
numbers up to 100th, basic concepts of fractions); measurement.
2. Recognize geometry (two- and three-dimensional objects, lines, symmetry, and
tessellation), patterns and algebra (repeating patterns and number sentences), statistics,
and probability (data gathering and representation in tables, pictographs, bar graphs,
and results).
3. Identify how to think critically, solve problems, reason, communicate, make connections
and representations, and make judgments in the actual world.
4. Utilize suitable technological tools to enhance critical thinking, problem-solving,
reasoning, communication, connection-making, representation, and decision-making
skills within real-world contexts.
5. Recognize and represent improper fractions, mixed numbers and decimals.
6. Create and interpret simple representations of data (tables and bar graphs) and
describe outcomes in simple experiments.
7. Use acquired understanding of factors and multiples, as well as operations involving
addition and subtraction of fractions, to solve mathematical problems and address
practical scenarios in real-world contexts.
8. Explore the principles of time, perimeter, area, and volume to solve mathematical
quandaries and practical scenarios.

IV. CONTENT OF THE SUBJECT


A. FIRST QUARTER
1. Visualizes numbers up to 100 000 with emphasis on numbers 10 001–100 000. / Gives
the place value and value of a digit in numbers up to 100 000. / Reads and writes
numbers, in symbols and in words, up to hundred thousand and compare them using
relation symbols
2. Rounds numbers to the nearest thousand and ten thousand. / Orders numbers up to
100 000 in increasing or decreasing order.
3. Multiplies numbers up to 3-digit numbers by up to 2-digit numbers without or with
regrouping. / Estimates the products of 3- to 4-digit numbers by 2- to 3- digit numbers
with reasonable results.
4. Multiplies mentally 2-digit by 1-to 2-digit numbers with products up to 200 and explains
the strategies used. / Solves routine and non-routine problems involving multiplication
of whole numbers including money using appropriate problem-solving strategies and
tools.
5. Solves multi-step routine and non-routine problems involving multiplication and
addition or subtraction using appropriate problem-solving strategies and tools.
6. Divides 3- to 4-digit numbers by 1-to 2-digit numbers without and with remainder. /
Divides mentally 2- to 4-digit numbers by tens or hundreds or by 1 000 without and with
remainder.
7. Estimates the quotient of 3- to 4-digit dividends by 1- to 2-digit divisors with reasonable
results.
8. solves routine and non-routine problems involving division of 3- to 4-digit numbers by 1-
to 2-digit numbers including money using appropriate problem-solving strategies a
tool. / Solves multi-step routine and non-routine problems involving division and any of
the other operations of whole numbers including money using appropriate problem-

B. SECOND QUARTER
1. identifies factors of a given number up to 100. / Identifies the multiples of a given
number up to 100. / Differentiates prime from composite numbers.
2. Writes a given number as a product of its prime factors. / Finds the common factors,
greatest common factor (GCF), common multiples and least common multiple (LCM) of
two numbers using the following methods: listing, prime factorization, and continuous
division.
3. Solves real-life problems involving GCF and LCM of 2 given numbers.
4. Changes improper fraction to mixed numbers and vice versa. / Changes fractions to
lowest forms.
5. Visualizes addition and subtraction of similar and dissimilar fractions. / Visualizes
subtraction of a fraction from a whole number.
6. Performs addition and subtraction of similar and dissimilar fractions. / Solves routine
and non-routine problems addition and/or subtraction of fractions using appropriate
problem-solving strategies and tools.
7. Visualizes decimal numbers using models like blocks, grids, number lines and money to
show the relationship to fractions. / Renames decimal numbers to fractions, and
fractions whose denominators are factors of 10 and 100 to decimals.
8. Gives the place value and the value of a digit of a given decimal number through
hundredths. / Reads and writes decimal numbers through hundredths.
9. Rounds decimal numbers to the nearest whole number and tenth.

C. THIRD QUARTER
1. Describes and draws parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular lines using ruler and set
square.
2. Describes and illustrates different angles (right, acute, and obtuse) using models. /
Describes the attributes/properties of triangles and quadrilaterals using concrete
objects or models.
3. Identifies and describes triangles according to sides and angles. / Identifies and
describes the different kinds of quadrilaterals: square, rectangle, parallelogram,
trapezoid, and rhombus.
4. Relates triangles to quadrilaterals / Relates one quadrilateral to another quadrilateral
(e.g., square to rhombus).
5. determines the missing term/s in a sequence of numbers (e.g., odd numbers, even
numbers, multiples of a number, factors of a number.
6. Finds the elapsed time in minutes and seconds. / Estimates the duration of time in
minutes. / Solves problems involving elapsed time.
7. Visualizes the perimeter of any given plane figure in different situations. / Measures the
perimeter of any given figure using appropriate tools. / Finds the perimeter of triangles,
squares, rectangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids.
8. Solves routine and non-routine problems in real-life situations involving perimeter of
squares and rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids.
9. Differentiates perimeter from area. / Converts sq. cm to sq. m and vice versa.

D. FOURTH QUARTER
1. Finds the area of irregular figures made up of squares and rectangles using sq. cm and
sq. m. / finds the area of triangles, parallelograms and trapezoids using sq. cm and sq.
m.
2. solves routine and non-routine problems involving squares, rectangles, triangles,
parallelograms, and trapezoids.
3. visualizes the volume of solid figures in different situations using non-standard (e.g.,
marbles, etc.) and standard units. / Finds the volume of a rectangular prism using cu.
cm and cu. m.
4. Solves routine and non-routine problems involving the volume of a rectangular prism.
5. Organizes data in tabular form and presents them in a single/double horizontal or
vertical bar graph.
6. Interprets data presented in different kinds of bar graphs (vertical/horizontal,
single/double bars). / Solves routine and non-routine problems using data presented in
a single or double-bar graph.
7. Draws inferences based on data presented in a double-bar graph. / Records favorable
outcomes in a simple experiment (e.g., tossing a coin, spinning a wheel, etc.)
