Ganguly, S. (2022). The Trivialisation Of Female Fans: Addressing Gender Stereotypes

der-stereotypes-around-fandoms/

(Gender Stereotypes specifically on female fans)

Ganguly discusses the gender stereotypes revolving around fandoms, sending the message that
female fans are never taken seriously. In contrast, sports fans (the majority male) rarely get the
same criticisms as women do. The author emphasizes the common stereotypes: female fans as
“hysterical” or “too loud” while male fans are “real music fans.” Despite the positive side of
being part of fandoms (e.g., community, sense of belongingness), there needs to be a stop to
dismissing female fans. This article provides to be useful as it gives importance to the topics of
gender stereotypes, sexism, and ageism.

(Double Standards)

The author, Julia Neff, studies and displays the intersection of feminism within fandoms. It

depicts the experiences of both male and female fans in fandoms, giving emphasis on what

women face within a patriarchal society such as misogyny, harsh criticisms, and double

standards. Neff also shows the cruel treatment and how this can have a lasting effect on the
people who experience these unfortunate situations. This study brings up the importance of

representation and how every person should be treated with fairness and equality.

(Relation of Music and Identity)

The authors discuss the value of music and how it shapes who we are and our identity. Music has
the ability to unite people and shape the development of a sense of self, in both positive and
negative ways. How various styles of music helped adolescents in classifying a certain identity,
setting them apart from other peer groups where they feel like a part of a community (sense of
belongingness). The kind of music a person listens to helps others in conveying information
about the likely characteristics of the listener. However, it is evident that the connection between
identity and music continues to grow within the social context that needs to be researched and
explored.

(Gender)
The author discusses how gender can influence people's notions about how one should act or
behave. Both men and women are expected to display themselves in a particular way, setting
examples that may be harmful to their health and well-being. Multiple labels influence how
people view themselves and have long-lasting (usually negative) effects. These expectations are
mostly directed at women, emphasizing that "men should be taken more seriously compared to
women." This research highlights the significance of awareness and how gender shouldn't
influence our identity.

Social Identity Theory Perspective. Psychological Reports, 124(5), 2272–2285.

(Social Identity Theory)

Laffan discusses how K-pop affects and influences its fans and supporters. The study applies the
social identity theory to examine the K-pop fandom's characteristics. As a result of
self-categorization, fans who identify as members of these fandoms develop a sense of
belonging, boost their self-esteem, enhance their sense of identity, and many other positive
outcomes. The study demonstrates how this fosters growth and empowers fans to discover one
another and find support, all of which can have a significant impact on an individual's life. It
demonstrates the value of having a supportive environment and how it will help you discover
and develop various aspects of yourself.
