Project introduction:

This project is to redesign the Barkat Market central block which serves as a parking area as well as a
larger green space for public interaction. There is also a mosque which has been built by the
shopkeepers which is placed in the park area.

Project Objective:
The objective of the project is to connect the people from diverse backgrounds, and encourage the
active participation of the individuals socially, by creating either one central space for all the socio-
economic interactions or dividing a larger public space into different or smaller spots for public
interactions that will also support the economic growth rate more.

Site Overview:
The existing infrastructure of Barkat Market has a very well-connected public transport network and
is already inclusive and approachable for almost every age group.

Design Brief:
Looking upon the results of the in-depth analysis and the surveys of the Barkat Market, I conclude
that the basic need for the space is to have maximum parking lots with better shading for the
customers as well as the vendors or shop owners, so they can have better parking environment. Also,
parking can serve a large area for interaction.

Another bigger issue is the less use of the central park, looking at the amount of the human traffic in
the market the central park can be redesigned to fulfil the needs of the people those who use that
space on the daily basis and changing it into a well-designed urban environment for families will
also change its existing use and the people will experience much safer environment.

The mosque shed a praying area should be designed in a form of actual structure that can be
properly ventilated and looking upon that the other facilities that are insufficient now such as water
and sewage, drainage systems can be designed properly for it. And with that much number of the
people the number of the toilets should be increased and can be designed at 2 different areas and
that too on the basis of the use (for general public and for the shop owners).

Design solutions:

• Pedestrian friendly cross walks

• Energy efficient streetlights
• Permeable surfaces for (Permeable surfaces consist of a top layer of brick, concrete, or
clay. This material is not porous like sand or gravel. Instead, the water lands on the surface
layer of brick and moves around the impermeable material to the gaps between the surface.
The water then reaches the second layer of the permeable product) and with help of this
water harvesting and storage can be done.
• Use of renewable materials, energy efficient facades, living walls, green facades.
• Passive design elements inside the designed structure.
• Vendor stalls can be designed with sufficient to control the use of artificial lighting.
• Designated dust bin areas for the hotspots and well designed with signages.
• Sensor based or smart parking systems into the main entrance roads.
• Central or divided public spots that should be flexible for different events.
• Volatile Organic Compounds (voc) finishes for the elevations.
• Division of the larger billboards at maximum hotspot points.
• Better and designed shaded seating into the park area.
• Recreation spaces for children’s
• Heat resisting landscapes.
• High Albedo Pavements for encroachments and walkways (a special type of
pavement that reflects more light than dark-coloured materials due to its lighter
colour)
• Cooling courtyards into the designed structures.
