ABSTRACT
On the night of Sept. 19, 1958, according to a persistent tale, the madam of a Roman brothel gazed out across the
streets of the Eternal City and murmured wistfully: 'The red lights are going out all over Italy. They shall not be lit
again in my lifetime." An apocryphal story, certainly. But on that date, legalized prostitution in Italy came to an end
—all because of an elderly widow and ex-schoolmarm named Angelina Merlin.
