ENTRANCE EXAMINATION for TECHNOLOGY 6 April 2020

available from 10.00 till 14.00 Finnish time
your responses must be sent by 14.15 (2 p.m.) Finnish time (GMT +2)

INSTRUCTIONS

The exam is available for 4 hours.

We recommend you do the following:

1. Write your answers to exam problems by hand. Show all the stages of your
working!
2. Scan or photograph the answers.
3. Compile all your answers to one file (e.g. in doc or pdf format).

We ask you to send your answers as attachments. Take at least 15 minutes to fill in
your personal details and to upload your attachments.

Write your name on each paper you return.

You should complete the tasks on your own. The best applicants are chosen for an
online interview.

Problem 2 a)
There are two main temperature scales
 0F, the Fahrenheit Scale, (used in the US), and
 0C, the Celsius Scale, (part of the Metric System, used in most countries)
They both measure the same thing, temperature, but use a different scale
 Boiling water, at normal pressure, measures 1000C in Celsius, but 2120 in
Fahrenheit.
 As water freezes, it measures 00C in Celsius, but 320 in Fahrenheit.

Write a linear formula which converts Fahrenheit to Celsius.

Problem 2 b)

All parabolas can be written in the form y  f  x   ax  bx  c .

2

The parabola passes through the points (-3; 0), (0; 9) and (3; 0). Find the constants
a , b and c .

Problem 3 a)
The base of the rectangle is three times longer than the height of the rectangle. The
diameter of the rectangle is 1000 meters. Find the perimeter of the rectangle. (The
diagram is not to scale.)

Problem 3 b)
A die is rolled 20 times with the following results:

Find the mean (average), median and mode scores.

5(8)

Problem 4 a)
We have 50 tickets in a hat numbered from 1 to 50. What is the probability that we
will pull out a number that is divisible by three or by five?

Problem 4 b)
We have 5 white and 2 blue balls in a bowl. We pull out two balls at random. What is
the probability that one ball is white and the other one is blue?

Problem 5
There are four football teams A, B, C and D. Each team has played once against all
the other teams.
After the played matches, the league table is as follows:

Team Win Draw Lost Goals Goals

scored by allowed by
the team the team
A 1 2 0 1
B 1 1 1 3 1
C 1 1 1 1
D 0 4

a) Fill in the missing information in the table.

b) What was the result of the match between team B and team C? (How many
goals did team B score and how many goals did team C score in this match?)
6(8)

Problem 6 a)
During one month the price of fuel increased by 20%. The next month it decreased
by 10%. What was the percent increase or decrease in the price of gas over the two
month period?

Problem 6 b)
Areas A and B are similar shapes. Find the area of shape A.

Problem 7
A rectangular piece of cardboard is twice as long as it is wide. A 4-cm square is cut
out of each corner, and the sides are turned up to make a box with an open top. The
volume of the box is 616 cm3. Find the original dimensions of the cardboard.

PROBLEMS 8, 9 AND 10 (Physics and Chemistry): Solve either A or B

8A
a)
A student throws a ball forward in windy conditions. Which forces act on the ball after
it has been thrown and travels in the air.
a) Only gravity downwards
b) Gravity downwards and a force from the throw
c) Gravity downwards and a force caused by the wind
d) A force caused by the wind and a force from the throw
e) Gravity downwards, a force from the throw and a force caused by the wind

b)
A heavy ball is dropped from the roof of a building without any initial speed. Neglect
the air resistance.
a) How fast is it travelling after it has fallen for 1.5 seconds?
b) How far has it fallen after 1.5 seconds?
Acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s2.

8B

concentration of the solution in g/L and mol/L. Show your calculations. MC=12;
MH =1; MO=16

9A
The thermal energy Q required to warm an amount of substance of mass m over the
temperature difference of Δt is calculated using the formula 𝑄 = 𝑐𝑚∆𝑡, in which c is
the specific heat capacity of the substance.
