Introduction

Great day! You are about to change and live a most challenging student life as you learn to adjust
in the era of the “new normal”. This kind of education requires us to unlearn what we have always
known: rows of desk, heavy bags, mass lectures, public exam, and (broken) parents-teacher
communication. Unlearn those, and we can establish the new normal education. At this point you will be
encouraged to learn by yourselves as you go along with this module. You will be responsible for your
learning progress because of this kind of education, it will not allow you to go to school and depend on
your teacher for daily learning. This is why you have to raise your confidence that you can learn through
your own motivation.

For much of the 20th century, a numbers approach devoid of context dominated mathematics. A
Christian approach says that mathematics is not autonomous but rather is an aspect of an interconnected
creation. Thus, learning needs to be establish clear connections with other subjects like the word of God
and practicalities of life.

Numbers are part of human life. The moment you were born, your parents probably noted the
time, your length, your weight, and most especially, counted your toes. Numbers accompany you
throughout life. You use numbers to measure your age, keep track of your grades and allowance, and
measure your wealth. In fact, Noah’s Ark measurement was designed by God just like us, we were created
by God in his own measurement. Isn’t that amazing?

Numbers emphasizes the application of mathematics in the service of society, including the
exploration of ethics and values related to such application.

As you go through reading and answering the application, you will deepen your understanding of
God and creation and how math helps them fulfill their calling.

Essential Questions:

As you go through this module, remember to search for the answer to the essential questions:

How does the

classification of
numbers help us solve
Verse to daily life problems? Live by:

Psalms 147: 5

“Great is our
Lord and mighty in
power; his
understanding has no 5
limit.”
Core Value in Focus:
Love and Devotion to
the Creator God

Let us start the module by keep on thinking about this question: How does classification
of numbers help us solve daily life problems?

Objectives:
At the end of this
module, learners are
expected to: Describe and illustrate

a.) well-defined sets;

b.) subsets;
c.) universal sets, and;
d.) the null set.

Lesson 1.1
Do you have primary knowledge about the sets? Do you even know what sets are? If you do, that’s
great because that will be the focus of our lesson today, so let’s proceed.

Definition

SET
A set may be thought of as well-defined collection of objects. These objects are called elements
or members of the set.

It is definitely common for us to use the concept of the sets in everyday experience.
Example:
a set of silverware a set of encyclopedia a set of tires for a car a set of dishes

In mathematics, we have discussed some of the following:

Example:
a set of counting numbers a set of points
a set of integers a set of books in the Bible
Do you understand what does it mean? What actually the sets we’re talking about? ________________

In example above what are the elements of a set of integers? Those are {-2, -1, 0, 1, 2}. That numbers
you can see in the braces {} are the example of a set of integers.

Try it! #1
6
So for the three sets left, give a t least 4 elements in every sets. Write
your answer at the back of this page. (Don’t forget to label it.)
Are you done on your first activity? Did you give at least 4 or more elements in every set? If you did,
then congrats! You are now proceeding to a deeper learning. Are you ready for it? Then let’s proceed.

Well-Defined Set

Which of the following sets are well-defined?

a. the set of all large numbers

b. the set of all multiples of 5
c. the set of good politicians
d. the set of names of the books in the Bible found in Old Testaments
Solution:
a.) The set is not well-defined. Some people will have different opinions on which numbers are large.
b.) The set is well-defined. Numbers that are multiples of 5 can easily be differentiated from the others.
c.) The set is not well-defined. Some people may include different politicians in the set.
d.) The set is well-defined because the names of the books in Bible that can be found in Old Testaments
are fixated and organized.

Try it! #2 Write your answer at the back of this page. (Don’t forget to label it.)
Which of the following sets are well-defined?
a.) The set of all factors of 18. c.) The set of senior citizens.
b.) The set of friendly people in d.) The set of names of the books in the
your neighborhood. Bible found in New Testaments.

Since you already tried to answer the 2 nd activity did you find it hard? If you did, then go back to
previous topic and review and try to relate it to or ask help from others. But if it seems like easy to
you? Well, keep on going!

Notation and Description of Sets

We use capital letters such as A, B, C, D, and E to denote sets and lowercase letters such as a, b, c, d,
and e to denote the elements of a set. It is also a common practice to list the elements of a set in braces { },
and separate these elements by commas. Thus, A = {5, 10, 15, 20} means “a set consisting of the elements
5, 10, 15, 20.” To indicate 5 as an element of set A, we write “5 ∈ A” and read it as “5 is an element of A” or
“5 is a member of A.” The symbol ∈ is read as “is an element of” or “is a member of” and the notation ∉ is
read as “is not element of.” Using our previous example, we may say that 5 ∈ A, 10 ∈ A, 15 ∈ A, 20 ∈ A, a ∉
A, and 7 ∉ A.

Are you confused? Well it says (A, B, C, D, and E) is the set of elements like set of integers, set
of counting numbers, set of points, and set of books in the Bible. Just like what we already discussed
7 of integers then it implies the small letters (a, b,
above, and if {-2, -1, 0, 1, 2} are elements of the set
c, d, e) are the elements of alphabet in small letters.
Some sets contain infinite number of elements. We use ellipsis (…) to indicate that there are
For example, we can write the set of natural numbers using ellipsis. N = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …} then . it definitely
has more elements of natural number or has a continuation on it. In mathematics we use ellipsis (…) to
cut or shorten the elements to avoid the infinite of a set.

If we pause for a moment thinking about ellipsis in mathematics and God, we can realize God’s
infinite love to human. As we are reminded of our verse. Psalms 147: 5 “Great is our Lord and
mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.” Yes, as ellipsis a symbol of infinity in
Mathematics, as God it is infinite, God has no limit. So, is God as a source of infinity? His love
power and understanding goes on forever, it has no limit. It implies the power of God, whatsoever
bad elements you did. He truly understands us. Unless we regret those bad elements we did.

Try it! #3 Write your answer at the back of this page. (Don’t forget to label it.)
If you will become a set, what are the good elements and bad elements you did in your
whole life?

Hooray! You are good as you think. Since you already finished describing you selves we need to
hurry for the next topic. Good job!

Important Terms to Remember

There are three ways in which we can describe a set. These are the following:

1. Roster Notation or Listing Method

It is a method describing a set by listing each element of the set inside the symbol { }. The elements
of set A, B, C and D are listed below.
A = {p, h, i, l, n, e, s} B = {5, 10, 15, …} C = {bible}
2. Verbal Description Method
It is a method of describing a set in words. We can describe the sets named in number 1 as follows:
Set A is the set of letters in the word “Philippines.”
Set B is the set of positive multiples of 5.
Set C is the set of Holy book for Christians.
3. Set Builder Notation
It is a method that lists the rules that determine whether an object is an element of the set rather
than the actual elements. This is read as “the set N contains the element x such that x is a. We can
describe the sets in number 1 in a set builder notation as follows:
A = {x | x is a letter in the word “Philippines”}
Try it! #4 (Write your answer at the back of this
B = {x | x is a positive multiple of 5}
page. Don’t forget to label it.)
C = {x | x is a Holy book for Christians}
a.) List the elements of H = {x| x are the
books of Moses}
8
b.) Write a rule for T = {algebra, geometry,
trigonometry, and statistics}.
Example:
Write a.) a verbal description
b.) a rule for A = {1, 2, 3}
Solution:
a.) Set A is the set of counting numbers less than 4.
b.) A = {x | x is a counting number less than 4}

FIRM-UP

You just tried doing a simple activity on classifying some words. Your goal in this module is
to learn the different types of classification.

Reflect on the question:

How would you determine the appropriate type of classification needed to solve real-life
problems?

Great! You finished the three ways of describing a set. You are doing well! Now we’ll discuss the
most important terms of the set. Let’s get started!

Definition
The cardinal number of a set A, denoted by n(A), is the number of elements in the set.
Thus, in A = {a, e, i, o, u}, n(A)= 5 because set A contains 5 elements.

For example, given the following sets, the cardinality of each set is written in n(A).
a.) A = {2,4,6,8,10}; n(A)=5
b.) B = {the letters of the English alphabet}; n(B)= 26
c.) C = {Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, . . . , Revelation}; n(C)=66
d.) D = {1,2,3,4, . . . }; n(D)= infinite
e.) E = ; E=0

Try it! #5 (Write your answer at the back of this page. Don’t forget to label it.)
Given the following sets, find the cardinality for each.

1.) A = {a, b, c, d, e, f, g} 2.) B= {the letter in the word MISSISSIPPI}

3.) C ={} 4.) D = {3, 4, 5, 6, … , 44}

5.) E= {1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, … , Revelation}

Easy, right? Just remember, when we say cardinal number you count the number of the
elements of a set then that’s it, you had your answer. Now let’s proceed to next classification and be
ready.

Definition
The null set is an empty set. The null set is a subset of any set, the symbol for an empty set is  or { }.

9
For example, use set notation to the set of all even prime numbers greater than 2.
Answer:  or {} an empty set.

Why? Because there are no even prime number that will be greater than two. Let’s go back to the
activities in cardinal number. As you can see in the given example in letter (e) and in given problem in
number (5) are the example of null set.

Try it! #6 (Write your answer at the back of this page. Don’t forget to label it.)
Give the elements of the set to all odd numbers that is divisible by 2

.
Did you find it easy? Yes or No. Just remember that ones the set has no elements can be
found, it will be null set or empty set. For the next classification let’s continue

Definition
Set A is a subset of a set B, written as A⊆B, if and only if every element in A is also an element in B.

Consider set V and set W.

V = {a, b, c, d, e} W = {a, e}
All elements of set W are found in set V, but not all elements of V are contained in W.
Consider set V and set W. INFORMATION
V ={a, b, c, d, e} W ={a, e} Every set is a subset
of itself.
All elements of set W are found in set V, but not all elements of V are contained in W. A ⊆ A for any set A.
If W ⊆ V but V is not a subset of W, we say that W is a proper subset of V.
Another example, which of the following are subsets of the set S = {a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h}?
a.) A = {b, c, d} is a subset, as all three elements are in S.
b.) B = {f, a, c, e} is a subset (note that the order of elements in a set is unimportant).
c.) C = {a, c, t, e} is not a subset because the element t is not in set S.
INFORMATION
An empty set is a subset of every set.

Consider an empty set {}. The empty set has no elements. This means that it is impossible to find an
element in the empty set that is not in Set A. Since an empty set has no elements, there is none that can
fail to be elements of A. Hence, the empty set is a subset of A.

For example,
Determine all the possible subsets of the set.
a.) {a, b} b.) {1, 2, 3}
Solution:

a.) We know that every set is a subset of itself: thus, {a, b} is a subset. We also know that the empty set
is the subset of all sets, so we have {}. The other subsets are {a} and {b}. The complete list subsets of
{a, b} is {}, {a}, {b}, {a, b}.

10
b.) Since the set {1, 2, 3} contains three elements, we would have the following:

Zero at a time One a time Two at a time Three at a time

{} {1} {1, 2} {1, 2, 3}
{2} {1, 3}
{3} {2, 3}

Try it! #7 (Write your answer at the back of this page. Don’t forget to label it.)
1.) {head, tail} 2.) {2, 4, 6, 8} 3.) {Ham, Shem, Japeth}

There you go, you have the knowledge of the difference of the set and the subset. Which is the
subset is an any elements of a set to another set.
Let’s tackle the next classification.
Definition
The universal set, denoted by U, is the set of all possible elements of any set used in the
problem. The universal set can be changed from problem, depending on the nature of the set
being discussed.

For example, the universal set U= {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9} contains the digits 1 through 9. In a discussion
using this universal set, we would only consider those sets which elements are members of U.
For example:
A = {1, 3, 5} might be discussed, but not C = {a, b, c} because the elements of C are not found in U.

Try it! #8 (Write your answer at the back of this page. Don’t forget to label it.)
Determine the subset of given universal set which is found in the book of the Bible in the New
Testaments. The subsets are:

1.) B = {John, Luke, James, Matthew} 2.) A = {Joshua, Ruth, Ezra, Ezekiel, Daniel}

Let’s look back

OPERATIONS on the definition and example of subset, as you can see there are
ON SETS
connections between subset and universal set. In other words the universal set is for whole given
In arithmetic, we have operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division that enable
elements while subset is the selected elements of the universal set.

Great job! You did your best. You will know your performance after your worksheet is
checked. Now, let’s proceed in to the next topic.

and try to understand it carefully.

Definition

The intersection of sets A and B, written as A∩B, is a set of elements that are members of both A
and B.

Given: A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}, B = {2, 4, 6}, and C = {1, 3, 5}.

Find: a.) A ∩ B b.) A ∩ C c.) B ∩ C d.) (A ∩B)∩C e.) A ∩ (B ∩ C)
Solution:
a.) The elements in A that are also in B are 2, 4, 6. Hence, A ∩ B = {2, 4, 6}.
b.) The elements of A that are also in C are 1, 3, and 5. Hence, A ∩ C = {1, 3, 5}.
c.) Examining sets B and C, we see that there are no elements common to both.
d.) There is no common element in A ∩ B and C. Therefore, (A ∩B)∩C = { }.
e.) Because B ∩ C is an empty set, thus A ∩ (B ∩ C) is also an empty set. Therefore, B ∩ C = { }
or B ∩ C = ⏀
Did you wonder why example (d) and (e) are an empty sets or null sets? Let’s find there intersection
one by one.
In example d.) (A ∩B)∩C first thing to do get the intersection of A and B let’s try.

A ∩B = {2, 4, 6} then intersect it to the set of C. The elements of A ∩B are {2, 4, 6} and the elements of set
C = {1, 3, 5} then there are no intersection because they have no the same elements between them.

You’re about to finish the lesson, be patient because this is it. Let’s proceed.

Definition Difference of Two Sets

The difference of sets A and B, written as AB, is a set of elements in A that are not in B.

For example,
Given: A = {r, o, y, g, b, i, v} and B = {r, y, b}.
Find: a.) AB b.) BA
Solution: a.) Taking A and subtracting B means elements in A that are not in B. Thus, AB ={o, g, i, v}.
b.) BA means elements in B that are not in A. Thus, BA = { }.
Try it! #11 (Write your answer at the back of this page. Don’t forget to label it.)

answer the following: b.) ML

Difference means subtracting (A-B and B-A). In example (b) the answer is null set because if
you subtract element of B to A there are no elements left.
