When doing past papers before the test, there is a Tape
Script (TS) document, which may be available. This
tapescript is a transcript of the dialogues (conversations)
spoken in the recording played during the test.
If you do not understand certain words when practising
for your test, you can check with the Tape Script and find
those words and check them with a dictionary. This will
help to perfect your listening skills as well.
During the test, recordings will usually be in an American
or British accent^, so it is important to get used to both
accents to be familiar with them.

You will hear someone speaking about a certain
thing/item.
You will also be provided with a passage with missing
information, numbered as questions.
By listening carefully to the talk, fill in the missing
information in the numbered space.
For this question, there is no word limit as to how much
you can write. However, make sure to write not more
than 1-2 words in this part.

(Questions 26-30)
You will hear an interview with someone who will be
asked about a certain item/thing they were involved
with/in.
For each question, listen to the interview carefully.

3. # Speaking (Optional
Component)
Speaking is a part of the Lower Secondary Checkpoint English
as a Second Language curriculum framework. However, it is
not assessed formally in the Checkpoint test at the end of
Stage 9 (Grade/Year 8/9).
Your school may test you in this component internally in the
form of a speaking test, and if it’s tested, here’s what you

need to do to do well in the test.
You should be able to:
Use both formal and informal language during a talk
Speak English fluently and accurately, especially during
social interactions with other students your age.
Explain and justify your own or other’s points of view
Recognise language mistakes that may be made during a
talk, and modify them so that it’s correct
Use a range of appropriate vocabulary during a talk.

It is essential that you should be able to speak with some
fluency and accuracy on a range of both general and
curricular (subject-related) topics to do well in Checkpoint
and beyond at IGCSE level.
During the test, you may be asked to speak about a
particular topic assigned to you by the examiner. Here, it will
be helpful if you already have experience talking about a
range of general topics, as this will help you do well in the
test.
