Page Number on each page. This is useful if individual sheets become detached for any reason.
5. Use word processing application spell check and grammar check function to help edit your
assignment.
6. Ensure that your printer’s output is of a good quality and that you have enough ink to print your

7. Non-submission of work without valid reasons will lead to an automatic REFERRAL. You will
then be asked to complete an alternative assignment.
8. Take great care that if you use other people’s work or ideas in your assignment, you properly
reference them, using the HARVARD referencing system, in you text and any bibliography,

Assignment Brief
Scenario:
“ABC” has been a reputed law firm in Kiribathgoda for over 30 years and currently they are trying to
modernize their business with the newest technologies. As the first step they have recruited a new IT
officer in order to develop a new computer system for the staff members (lawyers) who have been using
outdated computers, purchased 10 years ago (Both hardware and the software).
Some of the staff members of this firm work both at office and from home. Rest of them are based in
the office.
The IT officer had a brief discussion with each member individually to identify the requirements for a
new computer system. Then he understood that most of them are working only with word processing
and spread sheet applications, and they repeatedly mentioned that they need to have a virus guard to
prevent corrupting their documents by virus attacks.
They also had some bad experience with the previous computer systems with regard to virus attacks.
Also they need to have a high quality web camera, higher bandwidth Internet connection to make video
calls with their clients.
Those lawyers who are working at both firm and from home, need to have laptops and get printouts
from the firm’s printer even when they are at home.
As the IT officer, you have to design and implement a new computer system (for both categories of staff
members) to cover firm’s above requirements using newest technologies and installed with a vendor
based client operating system.
In the same time the management of the firm expects you to design a centralized server where the
shared fodders, printers etc. to be stored for the usage of different users. This should be a high end
configured computer which is installed with a vendor based server operating system.

Main Tasks:
Task 01:
Explain 5 different environments where the computer systems available are and should be able to
describe what are the technologies (current technologies and future trends), usage and roles of
computers in such environments. (LO 1.1) (M2.7)
Task 02:
Identify and explain various hardware, software and peripheral components of a computer system.
Provide an organizational chart with sub categories of hardware, software (Both Open Source and
Proprietary) and peripheral components with appropriate examples. (LO1.2)

Task 03:
What are the different types of computers have been/ are being built to cater different
requirements? Present 5 such different types and explain their usage (LO 1.3)

Task 04:
Produce system design specifications to meet the requirements given in scenario above for both
server and clients. (Software and hardware) (LO 2.1) (M1.1) (D1.1)

Task 05:
Evaluate the suitability of system design specifications for the above tasks. (LO 2.2) (M1.1) (D1.1)

Task 06:
You are required to perform following tasks.
a) Use a tool to discover the details about hardware and software installed into the system
(System Summery) (Activity 04) (LO 3.2)
b) Check the settings and functionality the of the Display, Sounds and Input devices through a
“Diagnostic Tool” of the system (Activity 04) (LO 3.2)

And document the readings of the activities

c) Prepare a “User Guide” (Technical Support Document) to guide users on how to perform
Activity 05, 06, 07 and 08 (LO 3.2)

(Activity 08) (LO 4.2)
b) Suggest the owner of “ABC” law firm, having a server for file sharing and store old document is
