Marzuki, which is a cultural centre in Menteng, central Jakarta. Then in 2004, he was officially declared one of the
National Heroes of Indonesia.

Ismail Marzuki was born on 11 May 1914 in Kwitang, Jakarta (formerly known as Batavia) to a wealthy Betawi family. His
father owned an automobile repair shop, and played the rebana; his mother died while giving birth to him. From a young
age Marzuki enjoyed music, listening to songs repeatedly on the family's gramophone and learning to play the rebana,
ukulele, and guitar.

Marzuki studied at an elementary school for Native Indonesians, the HIS (Hollandsch Inlandsche School) in Menteng; he
later attended the Dutch-language middle school MULO (Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs) on Mendjangan Street (now
Kwini I Street) in Jakarta. He became fluent in Indonesian, English, and Dutch. He also studied religion at Unwanul
Wustha Madrasah. However, he did not study music formally, instead learning by himself.

In 1931, he wrote his first song, "O Sarinah", which was about a suffering people. During his career he wrote between
202 and 204 songs. Among his most famous compositions are "Halo, Halo Bandung, "Rayuan Pulau Kelapa" (1944,
Solace on Coconut Island), "Gugur Bunga di Taman Bakti" (1945, The Fallen Flower in Bakti Garden), and "Selendang
Sutera" (1946, A Coil of Silk).

Marzuki started his music career by joining the Lief Java Orchestra by the mid 1930s. During this time he performed
regularly with the group at Studio Orkes NIROM II in Tegalega, Bandung, as part of the NIROM (Nederlandsch-Indische
Radio-omroepmaatschappij) station's Eastern Programme. Sometime around 1937 the group left NIROM and joined the
rival station VORO (Vereeniging voor Oostersche Radio Omroep), playing live every Saturday. Afterwards he led the
Jakarta Studio Orchestra, the Bandung Studio Orchestra, and later the Hoso Kanri Kyoku orchestra during Japanese
occupation of Indonesia.

In 1957 he wrote his last song, "Inikah Bahagia". He died at 14:00 on 25 May 1958 in his house in Tanah Abang, Jakarta.

Bad Experience When Visiting Friend’s House

Visiting our friend’s house could be an exciting and fun experience, but it didn’t happen to me. Otherwise, it became one
of my worst experiences I’ve ever had in my whole life.

This terrifying experience happened when I was in junior high school. That day, I and my four classmates decided to visit
one of our friends Arman, afterschool. Fortunately, the school was over early because all the teachers were going to
have a meeting. So, I, four of my classmate, and Arman went to his house at about 09.00 am. We went to Arman’s house
that located in Ngares, Trenggalek by riding bicycle.

It was quite long trip for riding bicycle. His house was about 5 km away from our school that located in downtown. It
took about an hour to get there. Although it was so tiring, I and all my friends were so happy because we made some
jokes along the way.

Finally, we almost get there. It was only a wooden suspension bridge that we need to cross to get to Arman’s house. One
by one of my friends crossed the bridge effortlessly. It looked easy. Then, it was my turn and Arman were waiting behind
me, became the last one.

I crossed the bridge slowly but when I had crossed the one and thirds of the bridge, I just realized something strange. It
was so shaky. It turned out that one of my friends was shaking the bridge’s wire at the end of the bridge. I was panic and
lost control, and then I hit the side of the wooden bridge. I almost fell into the river, but luckily my bike accidentally got
stuck in a wire of the bridge. Arman immediately approached and gave me some help to take my bike to the end of the
bridge.

I continued to cross the bridge by just walk. My friends who shook the wire said sorry to me and forgave him. He told me
that it was just for fun, but I thought that was too much.

Since that day, I have not visit Arman's house by riding bicycle again. Although he said that the bridge now has been
rebuilt and so stable but I’m still afraid.

Text 3:
I want to tell you my horrible story. It was about at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. I went to my parent’s garden,
which was quiet far from our house, to clean and cut the wild grass. The growing grass and bushes must be cleaned
because it disturbed the sengon trees to grow.

I had been there for about one hour. Suddenly it rained heavily, and I had to stop cleaning the garden. I decided to find a
small shelter called ranggon. Ranggon is a small place for farmers to have a rest for a moment before continuing their
activities. I was playing with my smartphone when the thunder angrily sounded, indicating heavy rain to come. I didn’t
see the lightning at that time, but I immediately stopped playing because I was afraid the rain water would damage it.

After some minutes, the rain was truly getting heavy. Suddenly, the sengon branch fell down near the ranggon where I
stayed. I was so surprised and tried to stay away from the tree. Just when I was about to move, the whole sengon tree
suddenly fell down on the ranggon roof. Although the tree was not too big, it still frightened me. I decided to grab my
motorcycle and seek for another shelter. But, as I stood near my motorcycle being parked, a long bamboo stick fell down
on my shoulder. I didn’t know where the bamboo stick came from, may be from the goat cage. It hurt me but
fortunately I was okay. I quickly left my motorcycle and tried to find shelter in someone’s house.

Finally, when the rain stopped I rode my motorcycle and went home safely. That afternoon was really one frightening
experience I have ever had. I said Alhamdulillah to the God for saving my life and for my motorcycle to not be struck
down by fallen tree.
