Lab#1-Configuring a Basic Topology Using Packet Tracer

Lab Objectives
At the end of the lab you should:
a. Be able to build and manipulate a basic network topology in Packet Tracer
b. Be able to configure basic cisco commands
c. Be able to test for connectivity between network devices
Note:
 For the network topology and IP addresses you will refer to your answers in class
exercise 1.
 You will only connect devices for subnet 0 as instructed in the original question

Task 1: Prepare
a) Ensure that you complete the subnet chart and network diagram in Class
Exercise 1
b) Review: List the pairs of devices that can be connected using the following
cables:
1. Straight through cable
2. Cross over cable
3. Roll over (console) cable

Task 2: Connect the Devices

a) Connect your devices in packer tracer using the network topology in your Class
Exercise 1 as a guide and your answers in task 1(b)

Note:
 For the network devices use the following: The 2960 switch and the 2621xm
router.
b) Label the devices in the Packet Tracer workspace to reflect your network
diagram in Class Exercise 1 for easy identification

Task 3: Configure User devices and Test for Connectivity

a) Refer to the topology and configure the TCP/IP settings on the PCs as shown
b) Ping using the simple PDU
c) Ping using command prompt
Note: The ping should work

Task 4: The Cisco Command Line Levels of Access
The lecturer will explain the following modes of access, their prompts and commands
applied in each mode
 User EXEC mode
 Privileged EXEC mode
 Global configuration mode
 Specific configuration modes: interface mode, line mode etc.

You will Configure the router and save configurations

a) On the router configure:
i. Hostname - STRATHMORE
ii. Banner - Authorized access ONLY!!!
iii. Enable password: cisco
iv. Enable secret: class
v. Console line password: bbit
vi. vty line password: sces
vii. Interface address (refer to topology on class exercise 1)
b) Test the configured settings to see if they work
c) Save configurations in NVRAM and on a tftp server

Bonus Task: Test in Simulation Mode

a) Run the simulation mode
b) Ping between PC-1 and PC-2
c) Advance the packets using auto-capture and forward
d) Examine the packets as they move through the topology
e) Repeat (b) and (c) as you click on each PDU and look for the IP address and MAC
address information at each node. What do you observe?
f) Now ping PC-1 and router interface and repeat (e). What do you observe?
g) Replace the switch with a hub and repeat (b). What do you observe?
h) Ping between PC-1 and router interface. What do you observe?
i) Ping between PC-2 and router interface. What do you observe?
j) What conclusion can you draw from pings sent via switch and pings sent via hub
connection?
