I ntroduction 1–1
Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G1000 Hitachi SNMP Agent User Guide
SNMP Manager overview
SNMP Manager is inst alled in t he net work m anagem ent st at ion. I t collect s
and m anages inform at ion from SNMP agent s inst alled in t he m anaged
devices on t he net work. The SNMP Manager graphically displays inform at ion
collect ed from t wo or m ore SNMP agent s, accum ulat es t he inform at ion in
t he dat abase, and analyzes problem s discovered while accum ulat ing t his
inform at ion.
1–2 I ntroduction
Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G1000 Hitachi SNMP Agent User Guide
• SNMP uses t he TCP/ I P User Dat agram Prot ocol ( UDP) . I f t he SNMP Agent
does not respond wit hin a specified t im e period, t he SNMP Manager re-
sends t he request packet . That t im e period is set by t he syst em
adm inist rat or, t aking int o account t he net work t raffic and operat ion
policy.
• I f an SNMP Agent again does not respond t o t he resent packet , t he SNMP
Manager assum es t hat an error has occurred. Depending on t he t im es
set for polling and response, t his can t ake several seconds.
I f an SNMP Agent det ect s an abnorm al event , it sends a t rap t o t he SNMP
Manager. However, if a t rap is dropped in t ransm ission, t he SNMP Manager
does not know t hat it was sent . For t his reason, you should use bot h polling
and t raps t o det erm ine whet her an abnorm al event has occurred.

SNMP traps
An SNMP Agent uses t he SNMP t rap funct ion t o report a st orage syst em
error t o t he SNMP Manager. I f an error occurs, an SNMP Agent issues an
SNMP t rap t hat report s t he failure t o an SNMP Manager. When issuing an
SNMP t rap, an SNMP Agent also report s a product num ber, nicknam e,
reference code, and an ident ifier of t he com ponent .
The following t able list s t he event s t hat t rigger an SNMP Agent t rap.
