SNMP Manager overview
SNMP Manager is inst alled in t he net work m anagem ent st at ion. I t collect s
and m anages inform at ion from SNMP agent s inst alled in t he m anaged
devices on t he net work. The SNMP Manager graphically displays inform at ion
collect ed from t wo or m ore SNMP agent s, accum ulat es t he inform at ion in
t he dat abase, and analyzes problem s discovered while accum ulat ing t his
inform at ion.

Note: VSP G1000 support s SNMPv1

SNMP Manager and SNMP Agent interaction

Figure 1-1 Example SNMP environment

Sim ple Net work Managem ent Prot ocol ( SNMP) is an indust ry- st andard
prot ocol for m anaging and m onit oring net w ork devices, including disk
devices, rout ers, and hubs. SNMP uses Sim ple Gat eway Managem ent
Prot ocol ( SGMP) t o m anage TCP/ I P gat eways.
An SNMP m anager m onit ors t he devices, which are referred t o as m anaged
nodes. Typically, an SNMP Manager polls t he SNMP agent s on a periodic
basis. The m anager receives t he report s from t he agent s and det erm ines
whet her t he devices are operat ing norm ally. I f an abnorm al event occurs,
an SNMP Agent can report t he condit ion wit hout a request from t he
m anager, by using a t rap m essage.
The net work m anagem ent st at ion can collect t he st at us ( inform at ion) of all
m anaged nodes. This inform at ion can be exam ined t o det erm ined if an
abnorm al event has occurred.
When an SNMP m anager polls an agent , t he following dialogue t akes place:
• An SNMP Manager sends a request packet t o an SNMPAgent , which
request s dat a regarding t he st at us of t he m anaged node.
• The SNMP Agent sends a response packet back t o t he SNMP Manager.

1–2 I ntroduction
Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G1000 Hitachi SNMP Agent User Guide
• SNMP uses t he TCP/ I P User Dat agram Prot ocol ( UDP) . I f t he SNMP Agent
does not respond wit hin a specified t im e period, t he SNMP Manager re-
sends t he request packet . That t im e period is set by t he syst em
adm inist rat or, t aking int o account t he net work t raffic and operat ion
policy.
• I f an SNMP Agent again does not respond t o t he resent packet , t he SNMP
Manager assum es t hat an error has occurred. Depending on t he t im es
set for polling and response, t his can t ake several seconds.
I f an SNMP Agent det ect s an abnorm al event , it sends a t rap t o t he SNMP
Manager. However, if a t rap is dropped in t ransm ission, t he SNMP Manager
does not know t hat it was sent . For t his reason, you should use bot h polling
and t raps t o det erm ine whet her an abnorm al event has occurred.

Management Information base

The st andardized configurat ion and dat abase of net work m anagem ent
inform at ion is called a Managem ent I nform at ion Base ( MI B) . A st andard
MI B is com m on t o all SNMP int erfaces. An ext ension MI B is defined by t he
part icular m anaged device or prot ocol.
A MI B is a collect ion of st andardized configurat ion and net work
m anagem ent inform at ion t hat is cont ained in each device on t he net work.
Each MI B cont ains a set of param et ers called m anaged obj ect s. Each
m anaged obj ect consist s of a param et er nam e, one or m ore param et er( s) ,
and a group of operat ions t hat can be execut ed w it h t he obj ect . The MI B
defines t he t ype of inform at ion t hat can be obt ained from a m anaged
device, and t he device set t ings t hat can be cont rolled from a m anagem ent
syst em .

SNMP Agent configuration

The Virt ual St orage Plat form G1000 SNMP Agent is inst alled on t he SVP,
which is t he com put er w it hin t he st orage array t hat m anages t he st orage
syst em . The Virt ual St orage Plat form G1000 has an exclusive LAN for
com m unicat ions bet ween a st orage syst em and t he SVP, and a separat e
LAN for SNMP. The configurat ion of each Net work Managem ent St at ion is
det erm ined by t he t ype of SNMP Manager. Figure 1- 2 SNMP environm ent
archit ect ure on page 1- 4 illust rat es t he SNMP environm ent . Figure 1-
3 Exam ple of SNMP operat ions on page 1- 4 shows an exam ple of SNMP
operat ions by using an SNMP Manager.

SNMP Agent functions

The SNMP Agent is m ount ed on t he m anaged device ( hard disk, et c.) in t he
net work. I t collect s error inform at ion, t he usage condit ion, and ot her
inform at ion about t he device, and forwards t he inform at ion t o t he SNMP
Manager. The SNMP Agent report s disk st orage syst em failures t o t he
m anager using t he funct ions described in t he following paragraphs.

SNMP traps
An SNMP Agent uses t he SNMP t rap funct ion t o report a st orage syst em
error t o t he SNMP Manager. I f an error occurs, an SNMP Agent issues an
SNMP t rap t hat report s t he failure t o an SNMP Manager. When issuing an
SNMP t rap, an SNMP Agent also report s a product num ber, nicknam e,
reference code, and an ident ifier of t he com ponent .
The following t able list s t he event s t hat t rigger an SNMP Agent t rap.

Moderat e failure det ect ed. Part ial failure.
Service failure det ect ed. Minor failure.

An SNMP Agent logs t he m ost recent 10,000 t raps, so you can see t he t rap

Solving SNMP problems

Use set up.exe when you inst all a secondary SVP. I f you do not , t raps could

from an I P address t hat is not ent ered, you will get a “ no reply” ret urn
and a cert ificat ion error is received for a t rap.
• SNMP cold trap function
Depending on your net work environm ent , when t he SVP is reboot ed
you m ight not receive Microsoft agent SNMP Agent cold t raps.
The Microsoft SNMP Agent m ight report Link up/ Link down Trap when
t he SVP reboot s.
A num ber of Link up/ Link down Traps m ay be report ed when t he OS

• Abnormal response to SNMP command
I f an error occurs in t he SVP, t raps m ight not be sent .
• Problems inputting MIB definition files
I f you cannot input t wo or m ore MI B definit ion files because of t he
specificat ions of t he SNMP m anager soft ware, use t he MI B definit ion files
for VSP G1000. Error report s include st orage syst em nicknam es, which
can be used t o ident ify each st orage syst em .
