TAIL STOCK

A tailstock, also known as a foot stock, is a device often used as

part of an engineering lathe, wood-turning lathe, or used in conjunction
with a rotary table on a milling machine.
It is usually used to apply support to the longitudinal rotary axis
of a work piece being machined. A lathe center is mounted in the
tailstock, and inserted against the sides of a hole in the center of the
workpiece. A tailstock has a Dead Center, while headstock has Live
Center. A Tailstock is particularly useful when the work piece is

3
relatively long and slender. Failing to use a tailstock can cause
"chatter," where the work piece bends excessively while being cut.

The assembly that we have considered for our course project

consists of 19 different parts and in total 22 parts. We have drawn detail
drawing of the assembly which gives information about each and every
part of the assembly. After that we have drawn the assembly drawing
which mainly shows two views of the assembly along with the part
numbers. Further exploded view and a general assembly view is also
drawn. In the general assembly we have used the break out view.

3 Coincidence Used to make two

4 Contact Using this tool two

Constraint geometries can be
brought in contact.

5 Offset Used to constraint

Constraint two bodies by
specifying distance
between them.

Using this tool

6 Generate numbers are
Numbering assigned to the
parts of the
assembly. This is
necessary for
drafting.

When a part is used
multiple times then
rather than
7 Fast Multi importing it again
Instantiation and again, we can
use this tool to
create it in the
assembly
environment.

8 Fix This tool is used to

particular position.

This tool is used to

9 Update All update the
assembly after
some changes are
made.

MANUFACTURING METHODS USED FOR PART FORMATION:

1) Body :
This is the largest component of the assembly of the tail
stock and it is a single component. It is generally made up of cast
iron and the most common method used for formation of this
component is casting.

2) Stud :
This part is mainly formed by casting but can also be formed
by machining processes like turning and threading. This part is
mostly made up of mild steel.

3) Handle (Lock) :
Handle which is used for locking the movement of tailstock
is generally made up of cast iron and the method used for
manufacturing is casting.

4) Nut, Bolts and Washers :

This parts are mostly made up of mild steel. Various
methods like machining, stamping are used for formation of
these parts.

5) Clamping Plate :
This part connects tail stock to lathe machine. Either made
by casting or machining processes. Material used for
manufacturing this part is steel.

11
6) Dead Centre :
Main part of the assembly. Manufacturing process used is
casting and the material used is steel.

7) Screw Spindle :
Material used for manufacturing is mild steel and processes
like casting and machining can be used for the manufacturing
purpose.

8) Flange :
Flange is made up of cast iron and the processes involved
in manufacturing are casting and machining processes like
drilling.

9) Hand Wheel :
Hand wheel which is used to control the movement of
barrel is made by casting process and material used is cast iron.

12
ASSEMBLING SEQUENCE:
1) Body is imported and fixed.

2) Clamping Plate is fixed using square bolt, washer and nut.

13
3) Handle and Stud both are fixed at their respective positions.

4) Screw Spindle and Flange is fixed using the Screw (M8).

14
5) Barrel and Dead Centre is fixed.

6) Wheel is fixed at the end and the assembly is complete.

15
SHADING OF ASSEMBLY WITH MATERIAL:

When a specific material is applied to each part and the

option in view toolbar is selected to shading with material, we
get the above view.
We can even generate a advanced bill which will give us
information about the costing of the assembly. This feature can
be added in the drafting environment. To use this feature we
have to enter the cost of material accordingly. The capture tool
was used to capture the above image. We can even perform
rendering in the assembly environment.
