I have always been aspired to learn more about society and hoped to make a

difference in my community in which people can lead better lives. Therefore, in

addition to participating in various volunteer activities and taking different social
science courses online, I would also love to have an opportunity to study social
science in university.

I have devoted myself to volunteer service since secondary school. The volunteer
experience of taking care of elderly has been so influential to me that I, as a student,
could do something to help the vulnerable but invisible group, such as elderly who
lives alone. The more I chatted with them, the more I know that what they need and
what they want are something simple. Most of the time, they just want to see their
children more often and more simply, someone listening to them. Also, being a
helper in District Councilor Office can give me a much clearer picture how a
community looks like. Through talking with people from all walks of life, I learn to see
things from different perspectives. Since then, I hope to equip myself with more
knowledge and theories in understanding society and consequently, I could make
contribution too.

In addition to the community experience I have had, I am also committed to

integrating into campus life. As a student ambassador (for promoting your
campus??), I need to organize different (What activity?) activities for students or
public to participate. The process of preparing and organizing activities has improved
my collaboration skills and time management, and coordination between members
has greatly enhanced my leadership skills. All the skills I have acquired can definitely
improve myself interpersonally and intrapersonally.

I have not ceased to equip myself with relevant knowledge. I have completed online
courses including ‘U.S. Public Policy: Social, Economic, and Foreign Policies’ organized
by Harvard University and ‘International Women’s Health and Human Rights’
provided by Stanford University. Understanding more in how policies are
administrated internationally, I start pondering the differences between other
countries and Hong Kong. These courses have provided my insight to look deeper
and further in social issues such as gender inequality and advocacy of human right.
My course is mainly to teach me the history of American administration and policy;
also, the course mentions the policy's cause and origin. The one statement that
impressed me the most was that "policy cannot be separated from power and
desire." (Relate what you have learnt from the course to what you want to study-
social science; your aspiration- how to make a difference?)

Over the past few years, I have learned to set realistic goals and focus on achieving
them one at a time, such as passing language test and attending many online
courses. For all the dots I have had, I hope to connect the next dot - getting in the
Social Science Programmes from university to equip myself more theoretical
knowledge and hence, while all the dots are connected, I can give back to society in
future.
