Emerging Issue in Laurel, Maryland

Response 2

Algal blooms are considered a concerning issue and the discovery of Algal blooms in the

Triadelphia reservoir and the T. Howard Duckett Reservoir in Lauren is surely an emerging issue

for the state and local government. Algal blooms produce toxins capable of causing harm to

aquatic life and humans making the state government responsible for intervening in the spread of

the toxins. The local government should corroborate with environmental agencies in facilitating

regular monitoring of the reservoirs and take measures that prohibit the growth of algae blooms.

Neglect of the algae blooms problem directly puts the safety and health of the community at

stake. The waterways serve different purposes as they can be used for drinking, recreational

activities, and economic purposes. The persistence of the issue could lead to significant

consequences for the region’s economy and ecosystem. Hence the state and local government is

mandated to solve the problem before it causes more harm.
