Reflection -

As I was observing Ms. Timm and her students it blew me away how much the big 5 ideas are
incorporated with every class that the students did. I think that from what I seen and how Ms. Timm taught the
students was she did a very good job at the I do, we do, you do strategy the students really grasped what she
was teaching them and was able to go back to their desk and work on their assignment on their own.

Throught this process of observation I went into this class nervous and not sure if I could handle it, and
I walked out of there on the last day of observation thinking that I could handle teaching elementary students.
My soul focus was to teach high school SPED because I was a paraprofessional for five year and that is where
I was comfortable and what I knew. This was an eye opener for me and I really enjoyed the elementary area
and could see myself teaching these grades.

What I learned about children and reading at this level-knowledge is they did not get where they are
over night and it takes time to a reading goal no matter the level. Another thing I learned was not everyone in
the class reads at the same level and that the teacher accommodates for their level and at times Ms. Timm
said that she has 8 small groups reading all different level books. WOW!

I have taken away many things from this observation. It is very important when it comes to reading that
I meet them at the level they are at, if I don’t students are going to get frustrated and give up because it is
overwhelming and too hard. The importance of great preparation is crucial in elementary classes because with
student being young their attention span is not long and if there is a hiccup on my end of the teaching its game
for distraction and a struggle to get the students to refocus on the teaching. Another thing for me to keep in
mind that just because I plan to teach the lesson one way and some students get it, I may have to make a
quick adjustment to reiterate what I am wanting to teach at that moment and knowing that everything is not
going to go as planned is how it goes sometimes, but it is very important to plan and be prepared to my full
ability.

Summary-

During my observations I need to start with while I was observing at four-hour increments for another
class as well as this one I had sporadic amounts of time with reading, it wasn't according to their daily schedule
and at Ethan School, their classes are forty-nine minutes long so there wasn’t a consistent amount of time.

Observation 1:

Today was one of its own, I came into a beginning of the week homecoming and picture day so most of
the day was out of sorts and disorganized, but Ms. Timm did her best to keep the students focused and she
was calm throughout the time I was there today. The class started the day off with morning meeting and one
student is up front using the smartboard independent reading unless asking the class for help to fill out the
daily information. When the students came back from computers Ms. Timm read Ms.Tizzy to the class, and
throughout the book she was asking questions about the story using the dialogical strategy using the CROWD
technique. The class finished up with the book and discussion and headed to lunch and when they came back
from lunch recess they either read their reading counts books independently, taking a test on their previous
book that they read, or going to the library to a new reading counts book.

Observation 2:

Today was a bit less chaotic then the previous class observation. The students came back to class from
lunch recess. They then started reading their reading counts books independently, taking a test on their
previous book that they read, or going to the library to a new reading counts book. During reading counts I had
the opportunity to listen to a student read me a book. I noticed that each is put into a small group according to
their reading level Ms. Timm had mentioned to me on the side that she will have up to eight different levels and
books to go through during the week. The groups also receive spelling words according to their book that they
are reading and they will aslo get tested on the book as well as the spelling words. The students went out for
thier last recess and when they came back Ms. Timm had them get their writing lesson which pertained to
proper nouns, pro-nouns, and common nouns and they correct them as a class and would discuss areas of
confusion if needed.

Observation 3:

The students start today off with morning meeting and as I said in day one of observation the class
started the day off with morning meeting and one student is up front using the smartboard independent reading
unless asking the class for help to fill out the daily information. The student get their activity books out and
even though it is their math book Ms. Timm asks students to volunteer to read aloud the math problems. In that
process of doing the math activity book Ms. Timm if she noticed something mentioned in the sentence that was
in a previous subject she would incorporate it in the math lesson. The students had computers and recess but
when they returned to class they took their reading tests with Ms. Timm and while one small group was taking
their tests she had the rest of the class either read their book again or play a computer program called Splash
Learn it is a computer learning game but they could only play that if they had all their other work done. The
class headed to lunch and when they came back from lunch recess they either read their reading counts
books independently, taking a test on their previous book that they read, or going to the library to a new
reading counts book.

Observation 4:
The students came back from lunch recess and they either read their reading counts books
independently, taking a test on their previous book that they read, or going to the library to a new reading
counts book.It was Friday so the student get to do EPIC (which I had no idea what that was until recently in
one of the last few week of my own classes). The students had the opinion to read or watch a video of their
choice. At this time Ms. Timm would give spelling tests or have students do work with her. Ms. Timm gave the
students the opportunity to fix work that they had gotten wrong throughout the week. As she was giving a
spelling test to one group of students I got the chance to give a small group of kids a spelling test as well. The
students went out for their last recess and then came back in and corrected week 5 of Adjective Daily Laguage
Practice worksheet.

Observation 5:

The students start today off with morning meeting and as I said in day one of observation the class
started the day off with morning meeting and one student is up front using the smartboard independent reading
unless asking the class for help to fill out the daily information. The different things that they discuss in the
morning meeting is date, number of the day, expanded form, money combinations of 10, sticker notation,
shape up, clock, count by 10’s and 5’s, fact fluency. This is all work that is done with independent reading. The
students worked in their activity book and students volunteered to read the problems to the class. When they
come back from recess they usually do a writing lesson but today Ms. Timm had them work on make up work
that is from when they were gone or didnt get finished. I walked around and helped the students with their math
homework I would have them read the problems to me and I would ask them questions about the question to
help them come up with the answer.
