*Structural Functionalism – is a framework for building a theory that sees society as a


complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability. The proponent
of this theory is Talcott Parsons..
Key Concepts: Social Structure, Manifest Functions, Adaptation, Integration, Social Dysfunc-
tion, Social Functions, Latent Function, Goal Attainment, Latency.
*Marxism – a social and economic theory owes its name and origins to Karl Marx, a German
philosopher, historian and economist. Marx believed that societal structure has this “class
conflict or class struggle” and this refer to the conflict between the entire classes over the dis-
tribution of society’s wealth and power.
Key Concepts: Class struggle/conflict, Capitalist, Economism, Materialism, Social Conflict, Pro-
letarians, Communism
*Symbolic Interactionism – is a sociological framework that focuses on the different mean-
ings individuals attach to objects, people and interactions as well as the corresponding be-
haviours that reflect those meanings and or interpretations. The proponents are Max Weber
and George Herbert Mead.
Key Concepts: Self, socialization, Generalization, Positivist-humanist, Objectivist-Subjectivist.

1. Structural Functionalism

*The AGIL Scheme:


A – Adaptation – a system must cope with external situational exigencies. It must adapt to
its needs.
G – Goal Attainment – a system must define and achieve its primary goal.
I – Integration – a system must regulate the interrelationship of its component parts.
L – Latency – a system must furnish, maintain and renew both the motivational and the cul-
tural patterns that create and sustain the motivation.

*Structures of the General Action System:


Cultural System – performs the latency function by providing actors with the norms and values
that motivate them for action.
Social System – copes with the integration by controlling its component parts.
Behavioural Organism as a System – handles adaptation function by adjusting to and trans-
forming the external world.
Personality System – performs the goal attainment function by defining system goals and mo-
bilizing resources to attain them.

3. Symbolic Interactionism - -a theory of social behaviour and interaction; tends us focus on
the language and symbols that help us give meaning to the experiences in our life.
*3 Principles:
Meaning – is an important element of human existence, a concept that is both subjective and
individualistic, and that people consequently act in accordance with the meanings they con-
strue.
Language – we use to communicate to perceive and convey the message. It give humans a
means by which to negotiate meaning through symbols. Humans identify meaning in speech
acts with others.
Thinking – modifies each individual’s interpretation of symbols. Thought is a mental conversa-
tion that requires different points of view. In the end, we give thought and idea to what we expe-
rienced.
