INTERNATIONAL GIFT – GIVING CUSTOMS
The tradition of gift-giving is a worldwide practice that is said to have been around since the
beginning of human beings. Over time different cultures have developed their own gift-giving
customs and traditions.
In France, the gift of wine for the hostess of a dinner party is not an appropriate gift as the
hostess would prefer to choose the vintage for the night. In Sweden, a bottle of wine or a flower
is an appropriate gift for the hostess. In Vietnam, a gift of whisky is appropriate for the host, and
some fruit or small gifts for the hostess, children, or elders of the home. Besides, gifts should
never be wrapped in black paper because this color is unlucky and associated with funerals in
this country. Gifts that symbolize cutting such as scissors, knives, and other sharp objects should
be avoided because they mean the cutting of the relationship. Also, in some countries, you
should not open the gift in front of the giver, and in others, it would be an insult if you did not
open the gift.
Beyond the gift itself, give careful consideration to the manner in which it is presented. Different
cultures have different customs regarding how a gift should be offered – using only your right
hand or using both hands, for example. Others have strong traditions related to the appropriate
way to accept a gift. In Singapore, for instance, it is the standard to graciously refuse a gift
several times before finally accepting it. The recipient would never unwrap a gift in front of the
giver for fear of appearing greedy.
Understanding these traditions and customs, as well as taking time to choose an appropriate gift,
will help you to avoid any awkwardness or embarrassment as you seek to build a better cross–
cultural relationship.

kids and let them know what is OK or not OK to see or do on the Internet. Another way is that

Don’t put the PC in a child’s room but keep it in an area where mum or dad can keep an eye on
things. That also makes the Internet more of a family activity.
Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends, they make online. Tell

Astronauts undergo many adaptations during space expeditions. NASA is collecting a

database as analysis for each mission is completed. By collecting a set of consistent core

Last week I went to visit Atlantic College, an excellent private college in Wales.
Unusually, it gives young people much needed experience of life outside the classroom, as well as
the opportunity to study for their exams. The students, who are aged between 16 and 18 and come

Smokejumpers are a special type of firefighters. They jump from planes into areas that
are difficult to reach by car or on foot, like the middle of a mountain forest. They race to put out
fires as fast as they can at the fire site. Their main goal is to stop a fire from spreading. Using
basic equipment such as shovels and axes, smokejumpers clear land and burnable materials like

Although the majority of smokejumpers are man, more women are joining. Most important are
your height and your weight. Smokejumpers employed in the U.S, for example must be 120 and

In Russia, many smokejumpers knew how to find food in the forest and even make
simple furniture from trees. The work is dangerous, and the hours are long, but for these
firefighters smokejumpers isn't just an occupation. They love being able to jump out of planes

Exercise can be fun!
Exercise has become a huge part of our world. There are gyms everywhere, but if
you're not keen on them, there are hundreds of exercise videos to choose from. Exercise is
good for you. It makes you feel better, look better and can help you live longer.

First of all, decide when you are going to exercise. Choose three times a week, like me.
Write EXERCISE in your diary, on your calendar, on the wall if necessary! Then make sure

Next, vary what you do. I went to the same aerobics class for two years! No wonder I
was bored! Now I use different machines at the gyms, I often change my jogging route and I
never do aerobics.
