Directions: After your brainstorming, you should have been able to identify a research topic of
interest that you will take on for the semester. Present at least two topics in this activity. Please
print the two proposals separately.
Proposal 1.

Working Title
The Impact of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and Social Media
Addiction on Surface Learning among College Students
Research Problem In 5 to 10 sentences in paragraph form, write a summary of
Statement your problem statement, while covering the following important
details:

1. What do we already know from the literature? (Cite at least 5

recent studies)

While there is considerable research on the impact of social

media addiction and FoMO on academic performance, such as
(1)
In a particular study, the social networking addiction of the
students was at moderate level and the male students had a
higher level of addiction compared to the female students. (2)

There was a significantly higher use of social media among

academically low-performing medical students compared with
(3)
high-performing medical students. FoMO can be positively
associated with students' smartphone addiction, and loneliness
(4)
is an important mediator of this association. The research
shows that social media may have a negative impact on
undergraduates' study habits and academic performance
because using more social media applications is positively
(5)
related to the amount of time spent on social media per day
Social media use and FoMO may be risk factors for increased
negative emotions, and resilience should be considered in
prevention and intervention strategies designed to mitigate
negative emotions among medical college students.
2. What area is not yet explored in the literature? (The gap in
the literature)

There is a lack of in-depth investigation into how these factors

specifically influence the adoption of surface learning strategies
among college students, which may hinder their overall
learning outcomes.

3. Following the gap, what is your objective? (Therefore, we

intend to study the…)

Therefore, we intend to study the relationship between Fear of

Missing Out (FoMO) and social media addiction, as well as its
impact on surface learning of college students
4. Justify the need for the study. (Why is it important to study
your topic?)

While numerous studies have explored the individual effects of

social media addiction and FOMO, there is a limited
understanding of how these two factors interact and potentially
reinforce each other in influencing surface learning behaviors
among college students.

Research Purpose The purpose of this phenomenological (narrative,

Statement phenomenological, grounded theory, ethnographic, case) study
is (was? will be?) to discover (understand?
describe? develop? discover?) the relationship between Fear
of Missing Out (FoMO) and social media addiction, especially
its impact on surface learning (central phenomenon of
the study) for college students (the participants)
at Centro Escolar University Malolos (the site).

At this stage in the research, the relationship between Fear

of Missing Out (FoMO) and social media addiction, as well as
its impact on surface learning (central
phenomenon) will be generally defined as examining how the
fear of missing out and excessive use of social media might
affect the way college students engage with their studies,
particularly in terms of surface learning strategies.
(a general definition of the central phenomenon).

Research Questions Central Question: What is the relationship between FoMO,

social media addiction, and surface learning among college
students?

Sub-Questions:
1. – How does the level of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO)
influence the extent of social media addiction among
college students?

2. – To what extent does social media addiction correlate

with the adoption of surface learning strategies in
college students?

3. – Are there specific demographic factors, such as age,

gender, or academic major, that influence the
relationship between FoMO, social media addiction, and
surface learning?

4. – What are the mechanisms through which FoMO and

social media addiction jointly impact the engagement in
surface learning behaviors among college students?

5. – What interventions or educational strategies can be

identified that help mitigate the negative impact of
FoMO and social media addiction on surface learning
outcomes for college students?
