Empathize: Understanding User Needs
Empathizing with potential users is a crucial step in the design thinking process as it lays the
foundation for creating a user-centred product. By putting ourselves in the shoes of the
users, we gain valuable insights into their needs, preferences, and pain points. This ensures
that the final product resonates with and addresses the actual requirements of the intended
audience.
The "Luminous Reflections" mirror project recognizes that lighting and mirrors are more
than just functional elements; they are instruments for creating atmosphere and expressing
individuality in interior spaces. Lighting can evoke emotions and set the tone of a room,
while mirrors reflect the personalities and aesthetics of those who inhabit the space. This
understanding drove the exploration of integrating mood lighting within mirrors to enhance
the overall experience.
Through user research and observations, we gathered insights into how people utilize
mirrors and lighting in their daily lives. We discovered that individuals seek not only practical
functionality but also a sense of connection to their surroundings. Users desire lighting
solutions that adapt to various moods and activities, from cozy evenings to vibrant
gatherings. This awareness of user needs guided our efforts to design a mirror that doesn't
merely reflect, but actively contributes to the ambiance of a space.
In the context of the "Luminous Reflections" mirror project, the problem statement "How
might we design a mirror with integrated mood lighting that offers customizable illumination
options to enhance ambiance and personal expression?" succinctly outlines the challenge at
hand. It encapsulates the objective of creating a novel product that marries the concepts of
mirrors and lighting while emphasizing personalization and ambiance enhancement.
This problem statement not only underscores the technical challenge of integrating lighting
into a mirror but also places strong emphasis on the user-centric nature of the project. It
recognizes the importance of enabling users to tailor the lighting according to their
preferences, thus ensuring a unique and emotionally resonant experience. By crafting this
problem statement, the design team is primed to ideate and prototype with a clear sense of
purpose, resulting in a product that truly addresses user needs and aspirations.
Ideate: Brainstorming Innovative Ideas
The ideation phase is a critical step in the design thinking process where creative thinking
flows freely to generate a wide range of innovative concepts. This phase is significant
because it encourages divergent thinking, allowing the design team to explore multiple
possibilities and break free from conventional constraints. By generating a plethora of ideas,
the team can later converge on the most promising solutions.
During the ideation phase of the "Luminous Reflections" mirror project, the design team
envisioned several groundbreaking concepts to bring the mirror's integrated mood lighting
to life:
Mirror Frame with Built-in LED Strips: This concept involves incorporating adjustable
LED strips directly into the mirror's frame. These LED strips could emit a spectrum of
colours and intensities, enabling users to create various lighting moods according to
their preferences.
Touch or Voice Controls: To ensure effortless control over the mirror's lighting, touch
or voice controls were proposed. Users could adjust the lighting colour, intensity, and
even dynamic lighting effects through intuitive touch gestures or voice commands,
enhancing the interactive experience.
App Integration for Personalized Presets: The idea of integrating a mobile app with
the mirror's lighting system emerged. Users could create and save personalized
lighting presets for different occasions or moods, making it easy to transform the
ambiance at a moment's notice.
Sleek and Versatile Design: Recognizing the diversity of interior styles, the team
proposed a design that is sleek and versatile. This design should seamlessly blend
into various room aesthetics while retaining its own unique aesthetic appeal.
By exploring these and other innovative ideas, the design team was able to envision a
spectrum of possibilities for the "Luminous Reflections" mirror. This rich array of concepts
provided a solid foundation for moving forward to the prototyping phase, where the most
promising ideas would be further developed and refined.
Through these prototyping efforts, the team gained invaluable insights into the
technical challenges, user interaction, and aesthetic considerations. By observing
how users engaged with the physical or virtual prototypes, the team could refine the
design to align with user preferences and expectations. This iterative process of
prototyping and feedback laid the groundwork for a mirror that not only met
functional requirements but also exceeded user expectations in terms of
functionality and design.
During the testing phase of the "Luminous Reflections" mirror project, the design
team followed a structured approach:
Evaluation Criteria: The participants were tasked with interacting with the prototype
and providing feedback based on specific criteria:
