Book of Bluegrass Slow Jam Songs

June 2016
NOTES

This songbook was originally compiled by Stephen Maltby, Bob Hayes and
Thane Phillips for use at the Yukon Bluegrass Music Society slow jam sessions
and annual bluegrass music camp. In August 2010 the book underwent an
extensive revision by Jan Tulloch, Jan Milner and Scott Wilson.

Over time, most of these songs have developed other forms, verses and/or
chord changes. The particular versions in this book are only one example, and
the name under the title of each song is the artist who performed the version
used in this book (not necessarily the composer). To learn the melody you
can search YouTube, iTunes, or your favourite music-streaming website for
examples of these songs.

The Nashville Numbering System

With this system the scale notes of a major scale, for example, C Major; C-D-E-
F-G-A-B-C, are changed to numbers. The C Major scale using the Nashville
Number System would be 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8.

Scale Examples: #1 is the root of the scale

Major Scale (1) 2 3 4 5 6 7

G A B C D E F#
A B C# D E F# G#
D E F# G A B C#
C D E F G A B

Key and Chord Numbers: The same system can be used for keys of songs and
the chord progressions of those songs. Here are the chords that fit each key
use the same numbering system (#1 is the key of the song). Most bluegrass
songs use the 1, 4, and 5 chords. Sometimes the 2m, 3m or 6m are played, but
not often. This is country music, remember!

Key Examples: #1 is the name of the key

Key (1) 2 3 4 5 6 7
G A B C D E F#
A B C# D E F# G#
D E F# G A B C#
C D E F G A B
Using a Capo

You can change the key of any song and still play familiar chord forms on the
guitar or banjo by using a capo.

Place the capo at (just above) the second fret and not too tight. By shortening
the strings, the playing length and sound frequency of the strings are changed.
Now strum a G-shape chord. The capo has changed the sound frequencies to
now play an A chord. All other chords follow the same pattern change.

For example, placing the capo at (just above) the second fret changes the C
chord (or 4 chord in the G scale) to a D chord. The D-shape chord (or 5 chord
in the G scale) becomes an E chord. Place the capo at (just above) the third fret
and the same G-shape chord sounds like a Bb chord, and so on.

The chart below shows you what happens to the chord sounds when you place
the capo at the first five frets (from the nut or head of the guitar). Learn this
and you will be playing in most keys in bluegrass. Bluegrass guitarists love
playing in the G-form because it has a great bass root and broad and bright
strum sound.

Slow Jams and Jam Etiquette

Jam Goals: The purpose of the bluegrass jam is to allow people to come together, enjoy and
participate in a musical journey; and, hopefully, help participants improve their musicianship.
Our bluegrass slow jam is a group effort at making music, learning repertoire and improving our
jamming skills. The musicians sit in a circle and we go around the circle, everyone getting a
chance to lead a song or take a solo during a song - you can also “pass”.

There are a few important things to bring to a slow jam:

• An open mind and a willingness to learn and share
• A sensitivity to playing in a group with other musicians
• Respect for your fellow jammers

Other points for consideration:

• The tempos at a slow jam are…. well… slow… to accommodate all levels of players
• Tune your instrument and… tune… tune… tune
• The jam circle runs clock-wise… for leading a song or taking a solo (a break)
• If you would rather not lead a song or take a break, no problem… just pass
• If you want to lead a song please know the song; the lyrics and the melody and the chord
changes
• If you lead a song announce the song's key before starting
• If you lead a song announce the chords if some one is not familiar with the tune
• When the player next to you does not know the chords and you do, tell them quietly or
turn so they can watch your fingering
• If you want to sit out a song, no problem
• Play quietly under the singer or the soloist in the circle
• Avoid “noodling” behind vocalists and soloists or when announcements are being made

(Tony Rice)

All a- [1] bout [5] our wedding [1] day

Only [1] say that you'll be [5] mine

In our home we'll happy [1] be
Down beside where the waters [4] flow
On the [1] banks [5] of the Ohi- [1] o

I took her [1] by her little white [5] hand

And dragged her down that bank of [1] sand
There I throwed her in to [4] drown
I watched her [1] as she [5] floated [1] down

Blue Ridge Cabin Home
(The Bluegrass Album Band)

There's a [1] well beaten path on this old [4] mountainside

Where I [5] wandered when I was a [1] lad
There I wandered alone to the [4] place I call home
In those [5] blue ridge hills far a- [1] way

How I [1] love those hills of old Vir- [4] ginia

From those [5] blue ridge hills I did [1] roam
When I die won't you bury me on the [4] mountain
Far a- [5] way near my blue ridge mountain [1] home

Now my [1] thoughts wander back to the [4] ramshackle shack

In those [5] blue ridge hills far a- [1] way
Where my mother and dad are [4] laid there to rest
The’re [5] sleeping in peace together [1] there

CHORUS

I re- [1] turn to that old mountain [4] home with the sigh
I've been [5] longing for days gone [1] by
When I die won't you bury me on this [4] old mountain side
Make my [5] resting place upon the hill so [1] high

Cora is Gone
( The Bluegrass Album Band)

The [1] winds through the night blowing so lonesome

My [4] darling Cory is [1] gone
I don't know why she told me goodbye
But my darling [5] Cory is [1] gone

Purchased her raiment so [5] fine
[1] Gave her my last green back dollar
And now she's [5] left me [1] behind

I'm bound to hear the whistle of a [4] freight train
And the [5] boxcars as they rattle down the [1] line

But her [5] age I did not [1] know

Oh her [1] hair was dark and curly

And her [4] cheeks were rosy [1] red
On her [4] breast she wore a [1] lily
Where I [5] longed to lay my [1] head

Be my [4] bride my every [1] dear
If she says [4] no come back and [1] tell me
And I’ll [5] run away with [1] you

No I’ll [1] not go ask my mother

She lies [4] on her bed of [1] rest
And in her [4] hand she holds a [1] dagger
To kill the [5] man that I love [1] best

I’ll go [1] back to East Virgina

I’m goin’ [4] back to East Vir- [1] gina

KMB Slow Jam Book

Little Cabin Home On The Hill
(Dave Grisman)

To [1] night I'm all alone with [4] out you my [1] dear
It seems there's a longing for you [5] still
All I [1] have to do now is [4] sit alone and [1] cry
In our little cabin [5] home on the [1] hill

Oh, [4] someone has taken you [1] from me

And left me here all a- [5] lone
Just [1] listen to the rain beat [4] on my window- [1] pane
In our little cabin [5] home on the [1] hill

I [1] hope you are happy to- [4] night as you [1] are
But in my heart there's a longing for you [5] still
I'll just [1] keep it there so [4] I won't be a- [1] lone
In our little cabin [5] home on the [1] hill

Long Black Veil – Rosanna Cash

[1] Ten years ago, on a cold, dark night

There was [5] someone was killed ‘neath the [4] town hall [1] lights
There were few at the scene, but they all did agree
That the [5] slayer who ran looked a [4] lot like [1] me

The [1] judge said son, what is your alibi

If [5] you were somewhere else, then you [4] won’t have to [1] die
I spoke not a word, though it meant my life
For I’d [5] been in the arms of my [4] best friend’s [1] wife

She [4] walks these [1] hills, in a [4] long black [1] veil
She [4] visits my [1] grave, when the [4] night winds [1] wail
Nobody knows, [4] nobody [1] sees
[4] Nobody [5] knows but [1] me

The [1] scaffold was high, and eternity near

She [5] stood in the crowd, and [4] shed not a [1] tear
But sometimes at night, when the cold wind moans
In a [5] long black veil, she cries [4] o’er my [1] bones

The [1] tears for me will be [4] falling

Like a [1] tree shedding its [5] leaves
[1] I'm making plans for the [4] teardrops
Cause [1] you're making [5] plans to [1] leave

You're making [5] plans to forget me

Old Home Place
(J. D. Crowe and The New South)

It’s been [1] ten long [3] years since [4] I left my [1] home
In the holler where I was [5] born
Where the [1] cool fall [3] nights make the [4] wood smoke [1] rise
And the foxhunter [5] blows his [1] horn

I [1] fell in [3] love with a [4] girl from the [1] town
I thought that she would be [5] true
I [1] ran a- [3] way to [4] Charlottes- [1] ville
And worked in a [5] sawmill or [1] two

[5] What have you done to the [1] old home place
[2] Why did they tear it [5] down
And [1] why did I [3] leave the [4] plough in the [1] field
And look for a [5] job in the [1] town

Well the [1] girl ran [3] off with [4] somebody [1] else
The taverns took all my [5] pay
And [1] here I [3] stand at the [4] old home [1] place
Before they [5] took it [1] away

Now the [1] geese fly [3] south and the [4] cold wind [1] moans
As I stand here and hang my [5] head
I’ve [1] lost my [3] love, I’ve [4] lost my [1] home
And now I [5] wish that I was [1] dead

Pick Me Up On Your Way Down
(Del McCoury)

You were [1] mine for just a while

Now you're [4] putting on a style
And you [5] never once looked back
At your home across the [1] track
You're the gossip of the town
But my [4] heart can still be found
Where you [5] tossed it on the ground
Pick me up on your way [1] down

Pick me [1] up on your way down

When you're [4] blue and all alone
When the [5] glamour starts to bore you
Come on back where you [1] belong
You may be their pride and joy
But they'll [4] find another toy
And they'll [5] take away your crown
Pick me up on your way [1] down

They have [1] changed you're attitude

Made you [4] haughty and so rude
Your new [5] friends now take the blame
But underneath you're still the [1] same
When you find these things are true
I'll be [4] waiting dear for you
When you [5] tumble to the ground
Pick me up on your way [1] down

White Dove

In the [1] deep rolling hills of old Vir- [4] ginia

There's a [1] place I love so [5] well
Where I [1] spent many days of my [4] childhood
In a [1] cabin where we [5] loved to [1] dwell

White [1] dove will mourn in [4] sorrow

The [1] willows will [5] hang their [1] heads
I live my life in [4] sorrow
Since [1] mother and [5] daddy are [1] dead

We were [1] all so happy there to- [4] gether

In our [1] peaceful, little mountain [5] home
But the [1] Savior needs angels up in [4] heaven
Now they [1] sing around the [5] great white [1] throne

CHORUS

As the [1] years roll by I often [4] wonder

And each [1] night as I wander through the [4] graveyard
Darkness [1] finds me where I [5] kneel to [1] pray

You Don't Know My Mind
(Jimmy Martin)

Honey [1] you don't know my mind, I'm lonesome all the [4] time
[5] Born to lose, a drifter that's [1] me
You can tell her for so long, she makes a rambler’s heart go [4] wrong
[5] Baby you don't know my mind to- [1] day

Heard the [1] music of the rails, slept in every old dirty [4] jail
[5] Lord life's too short for you to worry [1] me
When I find I can't win, I’m checking out a- [4] gain
[5] Baby you don't know my mind to- [1] day

I've been a [1] hobo and a tramp, and my soul has done been [4] stamped
[5] Lord things I know I've learned the hard, hard [1] way
I'm not here to judge or plead, but just to give my poor heart [4] ease
[5] Baby you don't know my mind to- [1] day

Honey [1] you don't know my mind, I'm lonesome all the [4] time
[5] Born to lose, a drifter that's [1] me

Your Love Is Like A Flower
(The Bluegrass Album Band)

It was [1] long, long ago in the [4] moonlight

When you [1] whispered so sweetly I [4] love you
As the [1] waters [5] murmured a [1] tune
