A STUDY ON POSSIBLE REUSE OF RAIN WATER CATCHMENT TO

REDUCE THE WATER SCARCITY

ABSTRACT
The one of the major problems faced by the world is, ‘WATER SCARCITY’. The
surface water is inadequate to meet the demands of living beings. The dependence on the
ground water also increased which also resulted in groundwater depletion. We are
acknowledged of the fact that over 71% of Earth is water but only 3% constitutes fresh water
and also about 11% of the total fresh water on earth is ground water which is available up to
depth of 800m and can be extracted for use. Due to rapid urbanisation, infiltration of
rainwater into subsoil has decreased drastically and recharging of groundwater has
diminished. This scenario requires an alternative source to bridge the gap between demand
and supply. Therefore, various methods and installations has to be suggested and practised in
order to reduce the water scarcity. One the easiest way to overcome the water problems is,
“Rain water catchment and its possible reuse”.
Rainwater catchment is collecting the run-off from a structure or other impervious
surface in order to store it for later use. Rainwater is relatively clean and absolutely free
source of water. It is socially acceptable and environmentally responsible. Rainwater is better
for landscape plants and gardens because it is not chlorinated. It can be used as a main source
of water or as a backup source to wells and municipal water. The system can be easily
retrofitted to an existing structure or built during new home construction. It uses simple
technologies that are inexpensive and also easy to maintain. Rainwater harvesting is
important for several reasons but one of the biggest is the fact that we are tapping out water
conservation gains inside our homes so we need to start looking outdoor for more
opportunities.

In this mini project we are going to study the features of Rainwater Catchment and
its possible reuse to reduce the scarcity of water in India. We will also study the case studies
of Rain water catchment and their benefits and deficiencies to overcome. Our studies will be
presented in Project book and Reviews conducted in the Department.
