xii SIMODRIVE Hollow Shaft Motors for Main Spindle Drives 1PM6/1PM4 (PPM) – 11.01 Edition
Description of the Hollow Shaft Motor 1
1.1 Features and design

Applications
1PM6 and 1PM4 motors have been designed for milling machines with high
spindle speeds or for lathes with directly–driven tools.
In order to allow internally cooled tools to be used, the 1PM6 and 1PM4 series
have a continuous hollow shaft as well as the possibility of mounting a rotating
gland through which the cooling–lubricating medium can be fed.

Features and advantages

The hollow–shaft motor is a compact direct drive solution where the mechanical
power of the motor is directly transferred to the spindle without any mechanical
transmission elements being used. This results in the following advantages:
S High dynamic response and therefore shorter acceleration times using a direct
drive
S High maximum speeds and continuous speeds are possible
S The motors can be simply mounted and replaced when service is required
S Neither belts nor the tension have to be adjusted

Mechanical limiting speed nmax

The max. permissible speed nmax is due to mechanical restrictions (bearing design,
short–circuit ring of the squirrel–cage rotor etc.). It is not permissible that this
speed is exceeded!
The motor may not be continuously operated at this speed. After a max. 3 minutes,
the speed must be reduced according to the following load duty cycle:
30% nmax
60% 2/3 nmax
10% Standstill

Max. continuous speed nS1cont

The maximum permissible speed, which is continuously permitted without speed
duty cycles.

S1 duty (continuous duty)

Operation with a constant load the duration of which is sufficient so that the ma-
chine goes into a thermal steady–state condition.

S6 duty (intermittent load)

Operation, which comprises a sequence of similar load duty cycles which includes
a period with constant motor load and a no–load period. If not otherwise specified,
then the power–on time refers to a load duty cycle of 10 min.
S6 – 40 %: 4 min load
6 min no–load time

Thermal time constant Tth

The thermal time constant defines the temperature rise of the motor winding when
the motor load is suddenly increased (step increase) to the permissible S1 torque.
The motor reaches 63% of its S1–final temperature after Tth.

2.2 Electrical data

The main spindle motors have the following electrical features:
S The constant torque M is available from standstill up to the rated operating point
S The constant power range starts from the rated operating point (also refer to
the speed–power diagrams in Section 5).
This constant power range can be advantageously utilized for main spindle
drives with typical machining and a constant cutting power; it also reduces the
drive converter power required.
S High overload capability over the complete speed range.
For several motors, the overload capability is reduced in the range around the
highest speed. The precise data should be taken from the motor characteristics,
refer to Section 5.

The speed and output data of induction motors are limited for thermal and mecha-
nical1) reasons. The maximum current is only limited by the thermal characteristics
of the motor winding.
Thermal limiting
Power losses are thermally stored in the motor and dissipated to the cooling me-
dium. The motor temperature which is obtained is dependent on, among other
things, the load duty cycle. It may never exceed the critical motor temperature.
The characteristics for continuous duty S1 and intermittent duty S6–40 %, S6–25
% and S6–10 % define the permissible output values at an ambient temperature of
up to 40 °C. In this case, a winding temperature rise of approx. 105 K can occur.

Drive converter limits

Limiting voltage characteristic
In the upper speed range, the drive converter provides the motor with the maxi-
mum output voltage in order to impress the controlled motor current. In order to
guarantee that the motor current is impressed up to the maximum speed, the cur-
rent, and therefore the maximum available motor output must be reduced as the
speed increases.
Above this voltage limiting characteristic, if more output is demanded, this causes
the speed to dip. In this case, there is no danger that the motor or drive converter
could be damaged.

Motor – power module assignment

Thermal limit
The drive output is thermally limited. When the power–on duration decreases, the
short–time output increases. The short–time output is defined by the short–time
current.

25 %
S6–25 %

10 min. duty cycle

The power–on duration is, according to IEC 60034–1, standardized for 15 %,

25 %, 40 %, 60 %. If a load duty cycle is not specified, it is 10 min.

Fig. 2-3 Power–on duration in intermittent operation

If the rated drive converter current lies above the motor rated current, then the
motor thermal characteristic (S1) determines the continuous output of the
combination.
This means that the drive or converter is not fully utilized.
In the inverse case, the rated drive converter current defines the available
continuous output.
This means that the motor is not thermally fully utilized. If load duty cycles are
used, then the motor must be selected so that the RMS current does not exceed
the permissible S1 value of the motor.

Operation from an uncontrolled supply

The drive modules can be operated from both uncontrolled and controlled
supply modules belonging to the SIMODRIVE 611 drive converter system. The
engineering and output data in the Catalog refer to operation with the controlled
infeed/regenerative feedback modules. This data should, if required, be corrected
when operated from uncontrolled infeed modules.
When operating the main spindle drive modules from an uncontrolled supply (UE
module), then a lower maximum motor output is available in the upper speed range
than when using the infeed/regenerative feedback module (refer to the diagram).
As a result of the lower DC link voltage of 490 V, for the UE module, the available
continuous output is given by:

2.3.3 Connecting–up information

Note
The overall system compatibility is only guaranteed when using shielded power
cables
The cable shields must be included in the protective grounding concept. Open
or unused cores/electric cables which can be touched, should be connected to
protective ground.

Warning
! Before carrying out any work on the three–phase motor, please ensure that it is
powered down and is locked out so that it cannot be re–started!
Please observe the rating plate data and circuit diagram in the terminal box.
Adequately dimension the connecting cables.

S Twisted or three–core cables with additional ground conductor should be used

as motor cables. The insulation should be removed from the cable ends so that
the remaining insulation extends up to the cable lug or terminal.
S The connecting cables should be freely arranged in the terminal box so that the
protective conductor has some excess length and the cable conductor insula-
tion cannot be damaged. It should be ensured that the connecting cables are
strain relieved.
S Please ensure that the following minimum air distances are maintained: Supply
voltages up to 500 V: Minimum air distance 4.5 mm
S After connecting–up the following should be checked
– the inside of the terminal box must be clean and free of any cable pieces
– all of the terminal screws must be tight
– the minimum air distances must be maintained
– the cable glands must be reliably sealed
– unused cable glands must be closed and the plugs must be tightly screwed
in place
– all of the sealing surfaces must be in a perfect condition
S the cooling conditions should be observed (refer to Section 3.4)

2.4 Thermal motor protection

2.4 Thermal motor protection

A KTY 84 PTC thermistor is integrated in the stator winding to sense the motor
temperature.
Type: KTY 84
Resistance when cold (20dC): approx. 580 Ω
Resistance when hot (100dC): approx. 1000 Ω
Connection: via signal cable
Response temperature: Pre–alarm at 120dC
Shutdown at 155dC 5dC
The temperature is sensed and evaluated in the drive converter; the closed–loop
control in the drive converter takes into account the temperature characteristic of
the motor resistances
The PTC thermistor function is monitored When a fault develops, an appropriate
signal is output to the open–loop control/drive converter. When the motor tempera-
ture increases, a ”pre–alarm, motor overtemperature” signal is initiated which can
be externally evaluated. If this signal is not observed, the drive converter is shut
down (tripped) when the shutdown temperature is exceeded. An appropriate fault
message is output.
The resistance change is proportional to the winding temperature change. For 1PM
motors, the temperature characteristic is taken into account in the closed–loop
control.

Warning
! If the user carries out an additional high–voltage winding test, then the ends of the
temperature sensor cables should be short–circuited before the test is made!
If the test voltage is even connected to one terminal at the temperature sensor,
then the temperature sensor will be destroyed.
Observe the correct polarity.

The temperature sensor has been designed so that the DIN/EN requirements for
protective electrical separation are fulfilled.

Signal cable
Pre–assembled cables offer many advantages over cables which are assembled
by the customer. In addition to the security of perfect functioning and the high qua-
lity, there are also cost benefits.
The power cables and signal cables should be routed separately in order to avoid
mutual disturbing effects (e.g. as a result of EMC) and to guarantee protective
electrical separation.

Note
The maximum cable lengths should be carefully observed.

How mounted components have to be balanced

The vibration severity of motors with mounted couplings is determined, in addition
to the motor balancing quality, also by the balance of the mounted component
If the motor and mounted component are separately balanced before they are
assembled, then the balancing process for the coupling must be adapted to the
motor balancing type.
The requirements placed on the balancing process are described in Table 3-1.

Cantilever force
In order to guarantee perfect operation, a cantilever force of 200 N cannot be
exceeded.

Axial force
The axial force, acting on the locating bearing, comprises the following
components:
S Axial force encountered in operation
– External axial forces acting on the motor
– Axial forces from the cooling–medium pressure of the cooling–lubricating
medium fed through the rotating gland
S Forces from spring–loaded bearings
S Rotor weight if the motor is mounted vertically
This results in a maximum axial force, depending on a direction.

Caution
! Please observe the axial forces as a result of the hydraulic active diameter
(surface) of the rotating gland.
daN = F (surface cm2) p (cooling medium pressure in bar)

For axial forces along the motor axis, the bearing alignment forces can be over-
come so that the rotor moves corresponding to the existing axial bearing play
(up to 0.2 mm).

3.4 Cooling

3.4 Cooling
Hollow–shaft motors must be continuously cooled in operation independent of the
duty type (S1, S6).

Forced ventilation (1PM6 series)

For air–cooled motors, the cooling ducts, through which the ambient air flows,
should be regularly cleaned depending on the degree of pollution at the installation.
The cooling ducts can be cleaned using, for example, dry, oil–free compressed air.

Liquid cooling (1PM4 series)

For liquid–cooled motors, the cooling conditions (intake temperature, liquid quan-
tity, cooling power) must be maintained. If required, the cooling medium should be
cleaned using a filter before it is fed to the motor cooling circuit.
A cooling system (heat exchanger) is required for operation. If the cooling medium
flow direction is not specified using arrows, the intake and outlet openings can be
freely selected.
Oil or water can be used as cooling medium for the 1PM4 series.

S Water cooling, refer to Section 3.4.3
S Cooling–lubricating medium gland, refer to Section 3.4.1

For the 1PM6 series with axially mounted fan, when mounting the rotating gland,
the fan with intermediate housing must be removed. The intermediate housing
must be provided with a recess for the cooling–lubricating medium feed. This
opening must be clean.

Notice
When mounting the rotating gland, it must be ensured that the thread is screwed–
on to the non–drive shaft end so that it is absolutely tight and no cooling medium
can leak out.

3.4.2 Liquid cooling (oil)

The following minimum requirements must be maintained:

Specific gravity: ρ 780 kgm–3
Specific thermal capacitance: cp 1870 Jkg–1K–1
Kinematic viscosity: n 10–5 m2 s–1
Cooling medium intake temperature (recommended): up to +25dC
When the cooling medium temperature is increased, the rated power PN is reduced
as follows:

3.4.3 Liquid cooling (water)

An anti–corrosion agent (e.g. Tyfocor) should be added to the water. In this case,
the amount of anticorrosion agent should not exceed 25% of the total mixture.
If a cooling medium other than water is used, the following data should be determi-
ned and the motor output reduction (de–rating) should be clarified with your Sie-
mens office:
S Specific gravity: ρ [kgm–3]
S Specific thermal capacitance: cp [Jkg–1K–1]
S Kinematic viscosity: n [10–5 m2 s–1]

Cooling medium intake temperature (recommended): up to +25 °C

In order to avoid moisture condensation, the cooling medium intake temperature
can be up to 40 °C depending on the ambient temperature.
When the cooling medium temperature is increased, the rated power PN is reduced
as follows:

Air flow 40 l/s 105 l/s
Ambient/cooling Operation: T = –15 °C to +40 °C (without restriction)
medium temperature Storage : T = –20 °C to +70 °C
When the temperature is increased, the rated output is reduced
as follows:
T > 40 °C to 50 °C ––> reduction to 92 % PN

Minimum clearance to the customers mechanical construction

A minimum clearance S between the intake and discharge openings and adjacent
components must be maintained (refer to example Fig. 3-10: radial fan, air
discharge, axial non–drive end)

For shaft height 100 mm: S = 30 mm Air discharge

For shaft height 132 mm: S = 60 mm
