Applications
1PM6 and 1PM4 motors have been designed for milling machines with high
spindle speeds or for lathes with directly–driven tools.
In order to allow internally cooled tools to be used, the 1PM6 and 1PM4 series
have a continuous hollow shaft as well as the possibility of mounting a rotating
gland through which the cooling–lubricating medium can be fed.

The speed and output data of induction motors are limited for thermal and mecha-
nical1) reasons. The maximum current is only limited by the thermal characteristics
of the motor winding.
Thermal limiting
Power losses are thermally stored in the motor and dissipated to the cooling me-
dium. The motor temperature which is obtained is dependent on, among other
things, the load duty cycle. It may never exceed the critical motor temperature.
The characteristics for continuous duty S1 and intermittent duty S6–40 %, S6–25
% and S6–10 % define the permissible output values at an ambient temperature of
up to 40 °C. In this case, a winding temperature rise of approx. 105 K can occur.
25 %
S6–25 %
If the rated drive converter current lies above the motor rated current, then the
motor thermal characteristic (S1) determines the continuous output of the
combination.
This means that the drive or converter is not fully utilized.
In the inverse case, the rated drive converter current defines the available
continuous output.
This means that the motor is not thermally fully utilized. If load duty cycles are
used, then the motor must be selected so that the RMS current does not exceed
the permissible S1 value of the motor.
The following generally applies:
If a range is defined by two limit values or characteristics, then the lower limit
defines the usable range.

be provided or the regenerative feedback power must be reduced by using longer
braking times.

Signal cable
Pre–assembled cables offer many advantages over cables which are assembled
by the customer. In addition to the security of perfect functioning and the high qua-
lity, there are also cost benefits.
The power cables and signal cables should be routed separately in order to avoid
mutual disturbing effects (e.g. as a result of EMC) and to guarantee protective
electrical separation.
Note
The maximum cable lengths should be carefully observed.

Cantilever force
In order to guarantee perfect operation, a cantilever force of 200 N cannot be
exceeded.
Axial force
The axial force, acting on the locating bearing, comprises the following
components:
S Axial force encountered in operation
– External axial forces acting on the motor
– Axial forces from the cooling–medium pressure of the cooling–lubricating
medium fed through the rotating gland
S Forces from spring–loaded bearings
S Rotor weight if the motor is mounted vertically
This results in a maximum axial force, depending on a direction.
Caution
! Please observe the axial forces as a result of the hydraulic active diameter
(surface) of the rotating gland.
daN = F (surface cm2) p (cooling medium pressure in bar)
For axial forces along the motor axis, the bearing alignment forces can be over-
come so that the rotor moves corresponding to the existing axial bearing play
(up to 0.2 mm).
The permissible axial force FAZ in operation depends on the motor mounting
position (refer to Fig. 3-3).

3.4 Cooling
Hollow–shaft motors must be continuously cooled in operation independent of the
duty type (S1, S6).
The rotating gland for the cooling–lubricating medium must be mounted at the
non–drive end shaft centering (bolted), refer to Fig. 3-5.
The rotary gland is mounted in compliance with the manufacturer’s data:

For the 1PM6 series with axially mounted fan, when mounting the rotating gland,
the fan with intermediate housing must be removed. The intermediate housing
must be provided with a recess for the cooling–lubricating medium feed. This
opening must be clean.
Notice
When mounting the rotating gland, it must be ensured that the thread is screwed–
on to the non–drive shaft end so that it is absolutely tight and no cooling medium
can leak out.
