Warning notice system
This manual contains notices you have to observe in order to ensure your personal safety, as well as to prevent
damage to property. The notices referring to your personal safety are highlighted in the manual by a safety alert
symbol, notices referring only to property damage have no safety alert symbol. These notices shown below are
graded according to the degree of danger.

DANGER
indicates that death or severe personal injury will result if proper precautions are not taken.

WARNING
indicates that death or severe personal injury may result if proper precautions are not taken.

CAUTION
indicates that minor personal injury can result if proper precautions are not taken.

NOTICE
indicates that property damage can result if proper precautions are not taken.
If more than one degree of danger is present, the warning notice representing the highest degree of danger will
be used. A notice warning of injury to persons with a safety alert symbol may also include a warning relating to
property damage.
Qualified Personnel
The product/system described in this documentation may be operated only by personnel qualified for the specific
task in accordance with the relevant documentation, in particular its warning notices and safety instructions.
Qualified personnel are those who, based on their training and experience, are capable of identifying risks and
avoiding potential hazards when working with these products/systems.

TS-3 Temperature Sensor

4 Operating Instructions, 03/2017, A5E32337739_AA
Introduction 1
WARNING
Product usage in residential area
This product is intended for use in industrial areas. Operation of this euipment in a
residential area may cause interference to several frequency based communications.

Overview
The TS-3 Temperature Sensor provides a current source input for corresponding
temperature compensation circuitry of specific Siemens ultrasonic level-measurement
devices. Temperature compensation is essential in applications where variation in
temperature of the sound medium is expected.
The TS-3 is used in conjunction with ultrasonic transducers that do not have an integral
temperature sensor. It is also used in instances where the use of the integral temperature
sensor (specific to some transducer models) is restricted.
By installing the temperature sensor in close proximity to the sound path of the associated
ultrasonic transducer, a signal representative of the sound medium’s ambient temperature is
obtained.
Typical applications for the TS-3 are:
● where faster temperature response is required
● where a flanged transducer is used
● where high temperatures are encountered
To achieve the best performance of temperature measurement in a typical open channel
flow application, the temperature sensor should be shielded from direct sunlight and
mounted half way between the ultrasonic transducer face and the maximum head achievable
in the application. Care should be taken to not obstruct the direct sound path of the
ultrasonic transducer.

Note
• The sensor should not be mounted in direct sunlight.
• The TS-3 is not compatible with products using the TS-2 or LTS-1 temperature sensors.
• Refer to the associated transceiver manual for usage compatibility.
Special Conditions for Safe Use
• The TS-3 shall only be installed in areas of low mechanical impact risk.

Accessory per Directive 97/23/EC and is not intended for use in pressure applications.

Instructions specific to hazardous area installations (Reference European ATEX Directive

94/9/EC, Annex II, 1/0/6)
The following instructions apply to equipment covered by certificate number
SIRA 00ATEX5136X:
1. The equipment may be used with flammable gases and vapors with the Apparatus Group
II and with Temperature class T4.
2. The equipment is certified for use in an ambient temperature range of -40 °C to +100 °C.
3. The equipment has not been assessed as a safety related device as referred to by EC
Directive 94/9/EC Annex II, clause 1.5.
4. The certificate has a ’X’ suffix, which indicates that special conditions of installation and
use apply. Those installing or inspecting this equipment must have access to the contents
of the certificate.
5. The apparatus shall only be supplied from a circuit containing a suitably rated fuse having
a breaking capacity of at least 1500 A.
