3-038R-R…MULTI-ANALYSER SF6

2. MULTI-ANALYSERSF6- Overview

Depending on the version, the battery-operated MultiAnalyserSF6 is equipped with the following main
components:

▪ one measuring module with a SF6 volume percentage sensor for determination of the SF6
concentration
▪ one moisture sensor for determination of the moisture content
▪ one SO2 sensor module for the determination of the SO2 concentration
as an indicator for the total concentration of decomposition products
(or optionally: SO2/HF module or SO2/HF/CO/H2S module).

The standard version of the SF6 volume percentage sensor is calibrated to a SF 6/N2 or SF6/air mixture and
measures the SF6 content in volume percent in such gas mixture. The SF 6 volume percentage sensor
works independently of air pressure and installation position.

The moisture sensor measures the dew point temperature of the SF 6 gas in °C dew point at inlet pressure.
The measuring value of the dew point in °C can automatically be indicated or converted into all established
indicating units in case of a modified setting. Measuring the dew point at inlet pressure, a higher accuracy
of the measurement is achieved with a reduced measuring time. The dew point at ambient pressure is
calculated based on this value.

With the SO2 sensor module for determining the SO 2 concentration, it is possible to draw conclusions
regarding the total concentration of decomposition products. The SO 2 value is used as an indicator for
the total concentration and the respective ratio is approx. 1:4 (see Cigré “SF 6-Recycling guide” page 49).
Additionally to a SO2 sensor the following modules are available as option: SO2/HF module or
SO2/HF/CO/H2S module: The lifetime of the integrated electrochemical sensors is two years. During the
operation of the device the residual lifetime of the electrochemical sensors (SO2/HF/H2S/CO) is indicated
on the info page of the sensor (see chapter 4.2.3 settings /sensor specific settings) so that the sensor
can be exchanged without any problems.

The modular construction of the Multi-AnalyserSF6 enables the user to replace each individual sensor
module for verification, calibration and exchange. In principle, it is also possible to measure with only one
measuring module.

For further versions of the MultiAnalyserSF6 please see the latest leaflet.

In addition to the individual sensor modules the MultiAnalyserSF6 is provided with a gas return system
consisting of the following components, a compressor, an internal gas storage vessel allowing to store at
least two measurements, a control unit, a 7“ capacitive touch screen and a high-performance battery.

It is also possible to work with the device in charging mode or in mains operation. (The battery is charged
in parallel to the mains operation).
The operating pressure of the connected SF6 filled equipment or SF6 vessel (cylinder or container) is
registered at the inlet of the device by means of the pressure sensor. The internal gas flow will be
monitored and controlled by pressure sensors, proportional valves and solenoid valves.
The control menu can be operated intuitively by the adjustable user languages (DE, EN, FR, ES, IT, PT,
CZ, PL, RUS, CN, JPN).

3-038R-R…MULTI-ANALYSER SF6

Purging the measuring hose before each measuring process guarantees precise and correct results for
subsequent measurements.
The final value of a measurement is recognised automatically. The measurement can be named
individually and saving the measuring data under consecutive number avoids overwriting of
measurements with same name. Results of up to 500 measurements can be saved with the
MultiAnalyserSF6 and can be read out and processed easily via the USB interface.

Remote control of the device and downloading of stored data is possible with a LAN and WLAN connection
via mobile devices. WLAN settings can be selected for Europe (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia,
Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway,
Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland) as well as for Turkey, India
and USA.

All MultiAnalyserSF6 components are integrated in a compact and lightweight plastic case for comfortable
transportation (trolley).
The user and maintenance-friendly device allows different types of measurements and treatment of the
measured gas:

▪ Internal storage of the measured gas and pumping the gas back to the gas compartment
(up to 10 bar pe) after the measurement.
▪ For measurements in cylinders, vessels or gas compartments with a higher pressure (max.
inlet pressure 35 pe) or if the measured gas should not be pumped back into the unit, it is
possible to connect a cylinder directly to the outlet (max. 10 bar pe). For this purpose, a
pressure reducer is not necessary and a separation of the device from the gas cylinder or
the gas compartment is not required.
▪ Connecting an external gas collecting bag allows continuous measurements (inlet pressure
max. 35 pe) without pumping the gas back.
The external bag is emptied via the MultiAnalyserSF6 or by connecting a service cart or
compressor unit.

For all types of measurements, no SF6 gas is released into the atmosphere.

3. Functional description

For the determination of the SF6 quality the following parameters can be measured with the
MultiAnalyser SF6 in its maximum version:

▪ SF6 volume percentage

▪ Humidity in the gas
▪ SO2 decomposition products as an indicator for decomposition products
▪ OPTIONAL: HF decomposition products
▪ OPTIONAL: HF / CO / H2S decomposition products

The measuring principles of the individual components are described in the following sections.

3.1 Function of the SF6 volume percentage sensor

The measuring principle is based on the evaluation of the different velocities of sound in gases. The
velocity of sound in air is normally about 330 m/s, while in pure SF 6 gas it is only about 130 m/s. The
velocity of sound measured in the measuring cell is temperature compensated and converted into SF 6
volume percent by means of a microprocessor.
The measuring results are transmitted to the host computer.
The SF6 concentration in SF6/CF4 mixtures (optional) is determined analogously. In contrast to the
determination of the SF6 percentage in SF6, the residual concentration is ideally not air but CF 4.

3.2 Function of the moisture sensor

The moisture sensor is based on the absorption of water molecules in a special polymer acting as
dielectric in a capacitor. This changes the electrical capacity of the capacitor which is recorded by the
electronic evaluation system and converted into a standard signal. This signal is forwarded to the main
computer.

3.3 Function of the SO2 sensor and HF sensor

These sensors are based on the electrochemical measuring principle and consist of three gold-plated
electrodes and a water-based acidic electrolyte. The structure of the sensors is the same for both SO 2
and HF, but different electrolytes are used and the reactions to determine the concentrations vary:

Electrochemical sensors:
The change in current generated by the released electrons is recorded by the electronic evaluation
system including temperature compensation and calibration in that area and converted into a standard
signal. This signal is forwarded to the main computer and converted into ppm value. The sensors have a
lifetime of two (2) years.

The CO and H2S sensors are identical to the SO2 and HF sensors with the
difference that other electrolytes are used for CO and H2S sensors which are
adjusted to the substance to be measured.

DILO ▪ C 4783-01 ▪ Page 15 / 65

3-038R-R…MULTI-ANALYSER SF6

SO2-Sensor:

The SF6 filled-in diffuses into the SO2 sensor and reacts on the measuring electrode in an oxidative process
according to the equation below:

Equation 1: measuring process

Sulphur dioxide (SO2): SO2 + 2H2O = H2SO4 + 2H+ + 2e-

The counter electrode tries to keep the occurring reaction at equilibrium by means of an oxygen
reduction producing water.

Equation 2: counter reaction:

Oxygen reduction: ½ O2 + 2H+ + 2e- = H2O

Overall reaction in the measuring cell:

SO2 + ½ O2 + H2O = H2SO4

If the SF6 gas to be examined contains SO2, electrons are released according to equation 1 by shifting
the electrochemical equilibrium.

HF sensor:

The SF6-filled in diffuses into the HF sensor and in the case that HF is contained, a PH reduction takes
place in an electro-catalytic reduction. By means of the following CL 2 reaction and subsequent redox
reaction, electrons are released.

This page indicates detailed information on the selected sensor.

Here, the residual lifetime of the electrochemical sensor (SO2; optionally: HF, CO, H2S) is indicated in days
(see red marking).

90 days before the expiry date a warning message indicates the end of the
lifetime allowing sufficient time to provide a new sensor. After expiry of the
lifetime, which is also displayed, the electrochemical sensor(s) is/are still fully
functional, but the sensors should be replaced by re-calibrated sensors as soon
as possible since the measured values might not fulfil the specifications any
more and might cause functional failure.

Trend analysis:

The trend analysis displays the last measured values (max. values of the last 10 min) in a diagram. With
the ruler it is possible to approach individual values. The corresponding value is shown at the top right of
the display field. The trend analysis is particularly helpful and useful for continuous measurements on a
gas compartment.

4.2.4 Measurement and storage of measuring data

For starting a measurement, the “measurement” function has to be selected in the function
selection (see page 20). (After switching on the device it is selected automatically). The corresponding
symbol is then displayed in the function bar on the right side. The selected gas path is shown as broken
line (e. g. to the external bag).

(Screen of the Multi-AnalyserSF6 - ‘Measurement’ function)

Correct measurement:
The correct measurement and determination of the gas quality to achieve a
useful correct measuring results is described in detail in the “SF6 Measurement
Guide“ of Cigré (document number 723; Download under https://e-cigre.org
(free of charge for Cigré members)).

Correct measurement:
In order to achieve stable measured values, only carry out measurements at constant inlet
pressure. This means that the gas volume of the gas compartment to be measured or the
available quantity of SF6 gas must be sufficient. A fluctuating or constantly decreasing
inlet pressure can lead to deviations in the measuring accuracy.

In the standard settings, the internal depressurised storage vessel (storage capacity of at least two
measurements, depending on the duration of measurement) is selected for storing the measured gas

The selected depressurised storage vessel appears in a green frame and the gas path is shown as line.

If the measured gas is to be collected in an externally connected, depressurised storage vessel, the
latter can be easily selected with a click. In this case, the external storage vessel appears in a green
frame and the gas path has changed correspondingly. (For switching from the external to the internal
storage tank, click on the internal storage vessel.)

DILO ▪ C 4783-01 ▪ Page 35 / 65

3-038R-R…MULTI-ANALYSER SF6

Ensure that, in the event the external storage tank has been selected, the latter
is connected to the outlet coupling 103.
If the external vessel has been selected but not connected or if it is already filled,
a started measurement is automatically switched off due to the overpressure in
the device.
If the internal vessel is selected and, additionally, an external depressurised
vessel is connected, both vessels are filled during measurement.

Risk of injury when coupling the hose under high pressure:

1. When coupling the hose under high pressure, more gas may escape. Danger
exists with decomposed gas. It is recommended to couple the hose at
pressures > 5 bar pa (depressurised).
Danger 2. Be careful when uncoupling the hose at high pressures.
Recoiling of the hose could cause injuries.

Upon selection of the “measurement” function and the storage tank, the measurement is started by

pressing the start key. After starting the measurement, the stop key instead of the start key
appears. The connected measured gas hose is purged automatically prior to the actual measurement.

The timely process of the hose purging has been selected in a way that even with two
connected hoses (max. 12 m) the gas inside the hoses is purged out.

The measured values are displayed and the active gas path flashes green.

(Screen – active measurement)

DILO ▪ C 4783-01 ▪ Page 36 / 65

3-038R-R…MULTI-ANALYSER SF6

The function carried out (purging of hose, measurement) is displayed above the device illustrated.
As long as the measured values are not yet stable, the bar in front of the corresponding measured value
flashes (green inside and red outside the adjusted limits). If the value of a sensor has reached its final
value, which is automatically determined by an algorithm, the bar is displayed statically.
If the measured values are out of the adjusted limits (See settings page 32), the corresponding value will
be marked with a red bar. If it is within the limit values, the bar is green. The elapsed measuring time is
displayed below the stop key.

It is also possible to individualise the measurement with

- a name (“Title of the measurement” e.g. name of the tested gas compartment, cylinder or
container),
- the “Type of gas compartment” (circuit breaker, cylinder or container and
- a “Note” (text field, comment).

To enter a text, press the fields on the keyboard that opens.

The input can be made before, during and after a measurement before it is saved.
Once the measurement has been saved, it is no longer possible to make changes.
The end of the measurement is obtained when all sensors have reached a stable final value.
In this case the stop key disappears and it is possible to save or reject the measurement:

(Screen – End of measurement)

DILO ▪ C 4783-01 ▪ Page 37 / 65

3-038R-R…MULTI-ANALYSER SF6

The values are saved by pressing the yellow save key. When saving, the entered name, type of gas
compartment and notes are accepted. It is no longer possible to make any changes after saving.
Successful saving is shown on the display and must be confirmed with “OK”.

(Screen – Storage of measured value)

Then the values can be read in the measurement data archive (see chapter 4.2.3) and the display shows
the main screen again.

The data will be stored with a consecutive number. Overwriting data with the same name
or without name is impossible in this respect.

The maximum storage capacity is 500 Measurements. After saving data of 500
measurements, a warning message indicates that the maximum capacity has been
reached. It is not possible to save the data of further measurements (after the
following measurement the save key will not be shown) until old data has been
deleted.

Precondition: The MultiAnalyserSF6 is equipped with a SO2 sensor.

If the measured gas contained SO2, the measuring chamber of the SO2 sensor is
rinsed until a value of < 1 ppm is reached, but max. 5 minutes. The process is
displayed in the status indication.

DILO ▪ C 4783-01 ▪ Page 38 / 65

3-038R-R…MULTI-ANALYSER SF6

Measurement of high SO2 concentrations - risk of damage to the device

Significant exceeding of the measuring range final value can cause damage to the sensor
(3-fold overload).
Warning
1). 500ppm sensor:
If the device is equipped with a 500ppm sensor, the device should either be purged
immediately with pure gas for a longer period of time or recovered externally (see special
functions chapter 4.3).

2). 20ppm and 100ppm sensor:

With the two smaller measuring ranges, purging or recovering of the device may also be
necessary when the measuring range is exceeded, if the automated purging function of
the SO2 sensor does not achieve the desired result.

It is recommended to purge the device with pure gas (to near 0 ppm) from a concentration
of half of the measuring range final value; especially prior to storing the device and to
ensure reliable measuring values in subsequent measurements.

If you press the reject key, the measured values are not saved and the main screen is displayed
directly.

If a measurement is interrupted with the stop key, it is possible to both save and reject
the measurement. Unstable measured values are marked with a grey bar in front of the
measured value.

If the automatic function is not selected (see chapter 4.2.6), the gas used for the measurement remains
in the selected depressurised vessel. After the measurement, the gas used can be pumped back
manually either into the gas compartment (connection 101) or into another vessel (connection 102), up
to a pressure of 10 bar pe (see chapter 4.2.5).

In the internal depressurised vessel of the MultiAnalyserSF6, it is

possible to store at least the gas of two measurements, depending
on the respective measurement duration. If the maximum filling
level is reached, any ongoing measurement will be interrupted
automatically.

In the event that the automatic function is switched on, for each setting (see chapter 4.2.6) the
intermediate stored measured gas is automatically pumped back into the gas compartment (connection
101) after the termination of the measurement or pumped back into a vessel connected to connection
102. Here, the maximum pressure of 10 bar pe is to be observed.

If the pressure at the connections 101 or 102 exceeds the

maximum admissible pressure of 10 bar pe when pumping back,
the process is interrupted and an error is displayed.

DILO ▪ C 4783-01 ▪ Page 39 / 65

3-038R-R…MULTI-ANALYSER SF6

4.2.5 Manual pumping back

If, during the measurement, the automatic operation key has not been activated, the gas used for
the measurement remains in the internal storage vessel or in the connected depressurised storage
vessel (connection 103) in the event that the latter was connected during the measurement.
For manually pumping back the measured gas, there is an option of pumping the gas either directly back
into the gas compartment (connection 101) or into a tank connected to connection 102.
With both options, the maximum admissible total pressure of 10 bar pe is to be observed.
In order to carry out the functions, select the “Manual pumping back” function.

(Screen – Function selection)

The corresponding gas path is shown on the display as continuous line.

(Screen – “Manual pumping back” function selected)

Select the tank the gas should be pumped into before starting the manual pumping back function by
pressing the corresponding symbol. The selected symbol is framed in green.

DILO ▪ C 4783-01 ▪ Page 40 / 65

3-038R-R…MULTI-ANALYSER SF6

By pressing the key, the gas is pumped back into the gas compartment connected to connection

101, by pressing the key, the gas is pumped back into a tank connected to connection 102.

The tank to be emptied has to be selected additionally, either the internal vessel or a depressurised

storage vessel connected to connection 103. The selection is made by clicking on the vessel on the
screen. The selected vessel is framed in green.

If the internal storage vessel has been selected for emptying and if, at the same time a
depressurised storage vessel is connected to connection 103, both storage tanks are
emptied when pumping back. If the external storage vessel has been selected, only this
tank is emptied when pumping back.

After selecting the function it can be started with the start key. During the function, the active gas
paths flash in green and the stop key appears.
The function stops automatically if the selected storage tank has been completely emptied but can be

interrupted with the stop key at any time. After completion or interruption, the start key is
displayed again and other functions can be selected.

4.2.6 Handling the measured gas and automatic function

Besides the normal measurement (chapter 4.2.4) where the measured gas remains in the internal or
external storage vessel after the measurement and subsequently has to be pumped back manually
(chapter 4.2.5), it is also possible to operate the MultiAnalyserSF6 in automatic mode. Two versions of
automatic operation are possible:

1. Carrying out a measurement with automatic pumping back of the measured gas into the gas
compartment (connection 101) after the measurement.

2. Carrying out a measurement with automatic pumping back of the measured gas into a vessel
connected to connection 102.

The automatic mode can only be activated if “Measurement” has been selected in the function selection
before.

With the automatic operation key the corresponding automatic function can be activated.

DILO ▪ C 4783-01 ▪ Page 41 / 65

3-038R-R…MULTI-ANALYSER SF6

(Selection of the automatic function)

As with manual pumping back, before starting the "automatic" measurement, the tank to which the gas
used is pumped back after the measurement must be selected. Either back into the gas compartment by

pressing the gas compartment symbol or into a tank connected to connection 102 by pressing the

gas cylinder symbol. According to the selection (symbol framed in green) the gas path is shown on
the screen as a continuous line and the activated automatic function is indicated by the orange colour of

the automatic key. The measurement can now be started with the start key.

After the measurement, according to the selection, the gas used for the measurement is pumped back
automatically into the gas compartment (connection 101) or into a vessel connected to connection 102.
Observe the maximum pressure of 10 bar pe.

If the pressure at the 101 or 102 connections exceeds the

maximum admissible pressure of 10 bar pe when pumping
back, the process is interrupted and an error message is
displayed.

When activating the automatic function, the device can be used in continuous operation.
For this purpose, please refer to chapter 4.2.7.

DILO ▪ C 4783-01 ▪ Page 42 / 65

3-038R-R…MULTI-ANALYSER SF6

4.2.7 Continuous operation

For monitoring the gas quality over a longer period of time, it is possible to operate the MultiAnalyserSF6
in “continuous operation”. Precondition for continuous operation is that the measurement function
key has been pressed in the function selection menu and that the automatic operation has been
activated.

The continuous operation can then be activated by pressing the continuous operation key.

It is recommended connecting a separate vessel to connection

102 for the continuous measurement and selecting the pumping
back into this vessel function (connection 102). In the event of an
active continuous measurement and pumping back into the gas
compartment (connection 101), the same gas would be
continuously measured and pumped back. A modification in the
gas quality could not be observed here
Also, it is recommended to connect the device to the main power
supply if a longer continuous operation is planned.

Example: Activated continuous operation with pumping back via outlet 102.

(Setting of continuous operation)

Once the continuous operation has been activated the gas paths are displayed on the screen as

continuous line and the time period between the measurements can be set below the continuous
operation key. Pressing the time input key, a keyboard opens which enables setting the interval
between measurement within a range of 15 minutes to 200 hours. Then the continuous measurement

can be started with the start key. The number of measuring cycles implemented is indicated above
the continuous operation key.

DILO ▪ C 4783-01 ▪ Page 43 / 65

3-038R-R…MULTI-ANALYSER SF6

Display of measuring cycles (here: 1 measurement)

Between the measurements (in waiting state), "Waiting time continuous operation" is displayed as the
status indication instead of "Measurement".

The continuous measurement can be stopped manually via the stop key at any time.
After the measuring process the measuring data of each measurement are automatically saved under an
additional consecutive number or if a name has been created prior to the measurement it is stored under
this name with an additional consecutive number.

When preparing the continuous measurement observe the maximum

number of 500 measurements, which can be saved! After having
reached the maximum number of measurements the continuous
measurement will be interrupted.

The vessel for storing the measured gas at the connection 102
should correspond to the expected number of measurements. Once
the maximum admissible pressure of 10 bar pe is reached, the
measurement is interrupted automatically.

4.2.8 Remote control via LAN/WLAN (optional)

Before the device can be remotely controlled from an external device (computer, notebook, tablet,
smartphone), establish either a LAN connection or a WLAN connection.

How to establish a LAN connection:

Establish the connection via the RJ45 socket (see page 18) on the MultiAnalyserSF6 with a network cable
to the mobile device (computer, notebook,...).

How to establish a WLAN connection (optional):

To establish a WLAN connection with a mobile device, make sure that the integrated WLAN router is
switched on and that the country code is selected accordingly (see chapter 4.2.3). It is then possible to
connect the mobile device to the WLAN, which is marked as

MultiAnalyser (Serial number)

To establish the connection, enter the following

WPA password: 33719801

In the WLAN settings it is possible to change both the WLAN name and the WPA key (logged in as
"supervisor"; see chapter 4.2.3).

DILO ▪ C 4783-01 ▪ Page 44 / 65

3-038R-R…MULTI-ANALYSER SF6

If one of these connections exists, the screen of the Multi-AnalyserSF6 can be mirrored on the external
device with a suitable viewer (e. g. VNC-Viewer).

Enter the following IP address: 192.168.0.1

On the mirrored screen, the device can be controlled and set with the appropriate input devices
(depending on the external device, mouse or touchpad) as if the operator is directly in front of the device.
Only the hose connections have to be installed in advance.

4.2.9 Transmission of measuring data

The transmission of the measuring data as CSV file (comma separated values) to a storage medium

connected to an USB connection - (see page 18) can be carried out via the archive of measuring
data key on the settings page (see chapter 4.2.3).

Before exporting the data the desired units and decimal separators for the data fields should be set and
verified. The selected decimal separators should correspond to the settings in the processing program. A
comma as decimal separator and a semicolon are pre-set as CSV separator (separation of the data
fields). Alternatively, it is possible to choose a point as decimal separator and a comma a CSV separator
(See page 23).

For the transmission of the measuring data as CSV file press the export key and the following
window opens:

(CSV export of the measuring data)

The memory location can be selected and the file name can be edited here. It is either possible to save
the CSV file on a storage device connected to the USB connection, in an internal storage, or on the
internal storage (access to the internal storage is possible via LAN/WLAN or via the FTP server). The
selected memory location is framed in orange. When pressing the “file name” field a keyboard opens to
edit the proposed file name.

The file is saved/exported by pressing the key.

When exporting the CSV file to the storage medium make sure that it is connected to the USB
connection. Otherwise the export is interrupted and the “Writing error CSV file“ message
appears after pressing the save key.

4.2.11 Switching off the MultiAnalyserSF6

For switching off the MultiAnalyserSF6 press the ON/OFF key on the housing (see page 18) until the
indication on the display extinguishes.

4.3 Special functions

The special functions are selected analogously to the measurement via the function selection key (see
page 20).

(Function selection – Special functions)

The individual special functions (framed in red) can be chosen and started by pressing the start key
and stopped with the stop key. The following special functions can be carried out:

Recovery of the device

This special function has to be carried out if there is contaminated SF6 gas inside the device. In order to
avoid malfunction or damage to the MultiAnalyserSF6 the contaminated SF6 can be recovered by
connecting a service cart or an external compressor unit to the 101 connection. When selecting this
function the corresponding internal valves of the Multi-AnalyserSF6 are switched so that the complete

internal gas volume can be recovered after pressing the start key and with the external recovery unit
(compressor unit or service cart) being switched on. The recovered gas should be stored in suitable
vessel according to its gas quality (vessels for new or reuse gas). It is absolutely necessary to avoid
emissions due to the high GWP value of SF6 and toxicity! After completion of the recovery process
the function has to be stopped manually be pressing the stop key and the device has to be vented
with pure SF6 afterwards. Therefore, a cylinder with pure SF6 has to be connected to Inlet 101 and a
measurement has to be started.

Evacuation of the device

If there is air in the device after having measured nitrogen/air or after working on the device and SF6
should be measured, the air has to be evacuated from the device in order to reach corresponding
measuring values and to avoid contamination of SF6 with air. The air/nitrogen can be evacuated by
connecting a service cart or an external vacuum pump to the 101 connection. When selecting this
function, the corresponding internal valves of the MultiAnalyserSF6 are switched so that the complete

DILO ▪ C 4783-01 ▪ Page 47 / 65

3-038R-R…MULTI-ANALYSER SF6

internal gas volume is evacuated after pressing the start key and with external evacuation device
being switched on (vacuum pump or service cart). The recovered air/nitrogen can be released into the
atmosphere without hesitation. After completion of the evacuation process the function has to be
stopped manually by pressing the stop key and the device has to be vented with pure SF6
afterwards. Therefore, a cylinder with pure SF6 has to be connected to Inlet 101 and a measurement has
to be started.

Pressure test of the compressor

This function allows the user to monitor the operation of the compressor. This pressure test should
especially be carried out if long times for pumping the measured gas are observed. After having selected

this special function and pressing the start key the compressor starts running and an internal
pressure is generated. In accordance with the max. pressure and the time required for generating the
pressure the result of this verification is displayed. In case the max. pressure and the required time do
not correspond to the specification the device should be sent to the manufacturer for verification of the
compressor.

Purging the measuring hose

The measuring hose is purged automatically prior to each measurement. If it is necessary to purge the
measuring hose for other reason this function can be carried out by this special function. After the

connection of the measuring hose and activation of the special function by pressing the start key the
hose is purged automatically. However, the time sequence is selected so that the gas in the hoses are
purged even with two connected hose (max. 12m). The function stops automatically.

Purging the SO2 sensor

(Provided that the MultiAnalyserSF6 is equipped with a SO2 sensor)
If SO2 has been detected in the SF6 gas to be examined the measuring cell of the SO2 sensor is purged
automatically after the measurement. The purging process runs until the SO2 value is lower than <1 ppm
or for a maximum of 5 minutes. If this process is necessary e. g. the SO2 concentration was too high or
the concentration value is still > 1 ppm after a purging time of 5 minutes it is possible to start this function
manually. For this purpose start the corresponding “Purging SO2 sensor“ special function by pressing the

start key. Analogous to the automatic purging process the SO2 sensor is purged until a SO2 value
<1ppm is reached or after a maximum of 5 minutes.

Drying the device

The “Drying the device“ special function allows to dry the SF6 gas in the piping of the MultiAnalyserSF6
(e.g. after a longer shutdown of the device or if humid SF 6 gas has been measured previously). Due to
the low initial value of the humidity measurement the measurement of dry SF6 gas can be simplified and
multiple measurements on the SF6 gas compartment or SF6 cylinder/container are thus avoided. The

“Drying the device” special function is started with the start key and stopped automatically after a
running time of 5 minutes. First, disconnect the existing gas connections at the connections of the device
in order to avoid possible damage to the device at higher pressures and unnecessary gas consumption.
It t is possible to interrupt the drying function by pressing the stop key at any time. After a drying time
of 5 minutes it is possible to restarted the drying process, if necessary.

ATTENTION! Danger to material assets!

Only carry out the drying process if the hose connections are uncoupled.

4.4 Charging the battery

The MultiAnalyserSF6 is equipped with a 4.0 AH ion battery, which enables at least 5 measurements with
pumping back. The battery is charged via an integrated electronic charging system which enables a
simultaneous charging and line operation of the device with 85 – 264 VAC, 47 – 63 Hz. The charging
status is displayed at the left bottom on the display (see page 20) and via the LED (see page 18).
The following status are displayed via the LED:

The battery charging status is continuously monitored during the operation of the MultiAnalyserSF6 and, in
order to avoid deep discharging and thus damage of the battery, the device is shuts down automatically
after a prior warning message if a defined voltage is undercut.

Attention! Danger for material assets!

In order to avoid a deep discharge of the installed battery and therefore a potential
damage, it is recommended to fully charge the battery after a period of 6 months
of in-activity. This is advised if the MultiAnalyserSF6 will be not used for a long
period of time. The recommended time interval will be shortened, if the device will
be placed into stock with a not fully charged battery (e.g. with a minimum charge
state of 30% before storage, the period of time until the next charge is only 30
days). Therefore, the battery should be charged completely before a longer period
of nonuse.
