Total Sensory Engagement


While the principles of composition suggest that art-making is a rigid
exercise supported by principles, chance and spontaneity have a place in
composition. Sometimes that chance is deliberately set up, such as in
performance art where the artist responds to audience reaction. Just as an
artist engages the senses in the work of creation, likewise the viewer is
engaged through senses.

Cai Guo-Qiang is a contemporary Chinese artist who grew up during
Mao’s Cultural Revolution. Bucking the suppressive Communist regime, he
explored gunpowder as a medium for painting.
