While the principles of composition suggest that art-making is a rigid exercise supported by principles, chance and spontaneity have a place in composition. Sometimes that chance is deliberately set up, such as in performance art where the artist responds to audience reaction. Just as an artist engages the senses in the work of creation, likewise the viewer is engaged through senses.
