çConsilium System Description Doc No. 709542A2
General
The VDR M4 is designed to meet the performance requirements and technical characteristics
for simplified ship borne voyage data recorders (S-VDRs) as required by IMO MSC.163(78)
and IEC 61996-2. However the VDR M4 can easily be expanded to a “full VDR”, e.g.
meeting performance requirements and technical characteristics for ship borne voyage data
recorders (VDRs) as required by the IMO Resolution A.861 and IEC 61996-1.
In this manual the equipment is called S-VDR/VDR M4 or VDR M4 where the description is
the same for both versions, and will be named S-VDR or “full VDR” only where necessary
for separating the two different applications.
Function
Input Data is received by the VDR M4 from different sources (instruments, controls
indicators etc.) on the bridge. Depending on type of source, the signals can be:
The Video and Audio signals are transformed to and stored as JPG-files and mp2-files
respectively. The Analogue signals and the On/Off signals are transferred to serial data
messages according to IEC 61162 or NMEA standards or occasionally to other proprietary
standards.
All received Input Data are time stamped and saved for 12 hours in the VDR M4 final
recording memory (FRM) in the capsule. One 12 hour period of the saved data can be stored
for a longer period, e.g. at Incident or Accidents, by a special Back-up procedure. That data
is saved in a special memory in the VDR M4, but outside the capsule. All saved data can be
transferred in different ways to be stored in other data memories, external to the VDR M4,
and can then replayed from there. Special replay software is needed to replay such stored
data.
Units
The VDR M4 comprises following units:
3 (8)
çConsilium System Description Doc No. 709542A2
Fixed or Float-free Capsule Including the FRM e.g. Final Recording Medium
The MU and the PSU are two separated steel cabinets. They can be placed anywhere indoors
on the bridge or a space in the vicinity of the bridge. The SCU must be placed at the conning
navigation work station on the bridge. The Capsule shall be placed on external deck in the
vicinity of the bridge.
The daily user communication with the VDR M4 is via SCU. There is no display or other
buttons on any unit. However, a portable PC/laptop can be connected to the VDR M4 for
authorized communication e.g. service, annual performance tests (APT) and Investigative
Authority downloading of data. This connection needs special pass words. An external
Portable Backup Box (PBB) or a ship’s computer can also be connected via a local network
(optional).
The main memory of the VDR M4 is that in the FRM (Capsule). A copy of the capsule data
can be stored on an Incident/Accident USB memory stick, which is placed in the locked
MU. It can also be used as a transfer memory of data to and from the VDR M4. There is no
other ship data memory built in the VDR M4. When the VDR M4 is connected to an external
memory e.g. in a PBB (Portable Backup Box) or an external ships computer, data can also be
stored there continuously (optional functions)
Replaying of data can be performed on dedicated external PC with the Consilium Player
software installed and equipped with an Ethernet or USB data input.
Main Unit
The main unit is a steel cabinet of approximately H = 600, W = 500, D = 230 mm for wall
mounting. It has one door and cable glands are in the bottom. The boards are mounted in the
cabinet as shown on figure below.

DCU
The Data Collecting board can receive signals from 14 IEC 61162-1/NMEA sources but it
can also communicate over two IEC 61162-2 / high speed NMEA and one channel RS485. It
has two opto isolated inputs for pulses (100-20000p/M) with 24 V power feed facility and
four opto isolated digital (on/off) inputs. Two switching relays can be controlled.
AMU
The Audio Mixer board can connect up to eight self controlled microphones plus two VHF
separated, on together four audio channels. There is also room for another four, not
controlled, audio inputs.
RGU
The Radar Grabber board can directly handle up to four RGB video inputs, which is more
than sufficient according to both S-VDR and “full-VDR” regulations.
SIU
The System integration boards includes the processor and internal memory for supervising of
the VDR System
ETU
The Ethernet switch Unit is for all external and internal Ethernet communication.
DC/DC converter
A separate DC/DC converter supplies the MU boards with internal DC power.
5 (8)
çConsilium System Description Doc No. 709542A2
PSU
The Power Supply Unit is placed in a separate wall mounted steel cabinet of about the same
size as the MU. It can be fed with 230VAC and with 115VAC from the ship emergency
source of electrical power. The PSU supplies the VDR M4 with 24 VDC. It also includes
necessary batteries to power the VDR M4 for 2hours of audio recording after ship’s
emergency power is lost. That process is controlled by the SIU in MU.
SCU
The System Control&Alarm Unit is a Consilium SD4 instrument type 6. It is an alarm and
remote instrument for the VDR M4 which must be placed at the conning navigation work
station on the bridge. It has an incident button which will save a 12 hours period of data. The
alarm function tells what type of alarm/alert or warning the VDR M4 is generating. Relay
and serial outputs are available for connection to external alarms or a central alarm table.
FRM / Capsule
The Final Recording Medium is placed in a capsule which is designed either for “full VDR”
or S-VDR demands. The VDR M4 can be equipped with three main types of capsules:
• Type A: Highlander, also called PDU for full VDR and PDU-S for S-VDR
installations
• Type B: L3, also called HVR for full VDR or SVR for S-VDR installations
• Type C: Tron (Jotron), only for S-VDR installations
The FRM is saving data during 12 hours and then starts to erase the oldest information
minute by minute. The FRM data can be downloaded from the capsule to an external laptop
computer or, by optional installation, to a PBB (Portable Black Box) or a permanently
network connected external PC on board the ship.
DAU
The Data Acquisition Unit is mounted in a separate steel cabinet of about the same size as
MU. It can receive and convert all type of analogue, digital (on/off) or synchro signals,
occurring on ship instruments, which must be recorded by a “full VDR”. The DAU is an
optional unit. The DAU will normally not be needed at S-VDR installations as an S-VDR has
all data available in IEC 61162/NMEA format. At solitary non IEC 61162/NMEA signals
Sixnet Modules will be used instead of the DAU.

Input Data
Date & Time and Ship position is normally received from the GPS in IEC 61162/NMEA
format. The signal goes to the DCU board in the MU.
Normally this also holds for Speed, Heading and AIS information. Older Heading Gyros and
Speed Logs may have the output in other formats but due to the regulations for AIS
installations there are most often IEC 61162/NMEA signals available. However the DCU
also has an input for pulse signals (100-20000p/M) with a 24V power feed facility.
Ships Audio can be received from up to eight self controlled microphones plus 2 VHF
separated on together four audio channels and connected to the AMU board. There is also
room for another four audio inputs. The microphones are of Consilium’s own, high
performing design and are available for indoor and outdoor mounting. Normally three to four
microphones and one VHF will cover the VDR regulation demands.
The Radar is connected via a special video input and is then prepared by the RGU. One
picture every 15 second from the radar master display is sufficient for an ordinary VDR
installation. Only when the radar has no video output and no video interface is available on
the market (i.e. special manufacturing is needed) is it possible to omit the radar recording
and instead use the AIS information.
NOTE: At S-VDR installations any other data items listed for the “full VDR” (IMO
Resolution A.861 and IEC 61162) must be recorded if they are available in IEC 61162
format. “NMEA-like” serial signals (i.e. in proprietary formats) may, but must not be
recorded.
Analogue, digital (On/Off) and synchro signals etc. from “other items to be recorded” can be
necessary to convert at a “full VDR” installation. Main alarms, rudder order/response, engine
order/response, hull openings, water tight doors and fire doors are still very rarely available
7 (8)
çConsilium System Description Doc No. 709542A2
in serial format and needs conversion to serial signals before connected to the VDR M4.
Such conversion is performed in the DAU or in separate Sixnet-modules.
NOTE: A few (four) digital signals can be connected directly to the DCU.
Stored Data
All data received through the DCU, AMU, RGU boards is prepared by the SIU and sent to
the FRM (Capsule). The ETU is sending the Ethernet data do correct addresses. Data is
normally streamed to the FRM and the USB memory in MU if no other directives are given.
Alarm
The SCU unit communicates with the MU by serial connection. If there is an alarm or a
warning condition in the VDR M4 the SCU starts alarming. A short description of the alarm
is shown on the SCU display. For further information; see the User Guide.
Data outputs
Due to data safety reasons there is a data firewall in the ETU. All VDR data is protected by
passwords.
USB output
There is an USB output which has an USB memory connected for accident/incident storing
of the last 12 hours FRM memory (see USB memory stick above).
PBB
A Portable Black Box (optional) can be connected to the ETU for further enlarging the
memory beyond regulated size.

1 VDR M4 – Overview
This first paragraph gives a quick overview of the VDR M4 and how it shall be operated.
The VDR M4 is designed to work automatically without any break or supervision at all. The
only reasons to care about the VDR M4 are:
• at incidents/accidents - to remember to save (back up) and decide if data shall be
moved to another memory
• at alarms or warnings, if any - to find out what reason(s) have caused the alarm or the
warning
• at the annual performance tests, which also includes service of the VDR - to assure
that the VDR functions correctly
We recommend the user to start reading “System Description” and then read the detailed
guide below, particularly chapter 2; “Incidents and Accidents”, which is necessary to know
by heart at a stressed incident or accident situation. It is also recommended to include the
procedure at incidents and accidents in the ship’s management system.
The SCU shall be placed at the conning position on the bridge, i.e. from where the vessel is
normally navigated.
1.1.1 Incidents/Accidents
Data recorded to the Final Recording Medium (FRM) in the Capsule is simultaneously
recorded to the USB memory stick placed behind the locked door of the VDR M4 Main Unit
cabinet. At an incident or accident it is possible to “freeze” the last 12 hours period of VDR-
recorded data on that USB memory stick, by pressing the Backup button at the SCU for more
than 2 sec. Such saved data will not be erased after 12 hours unless the USB stick is removed
from the VDR MU (see below).
NOTE: The USB memory stick can be removed from its holder in MU and copied to
another external computer. When replaced again in the MU the data will be gradually
erased. It is recommended to use at least two Consilium formatted USB memory sticks
for saving more than one Incident/Accident.
Only use Consilium USB stick otherwise guarantee is not valid.
4 (22)
çConsilium User Guide Doc No. 709543B1
USB USB
Regarding procedure at investigation on board from authorities after accidents, see chapter
2.4 further in this guide and in the Investigative Authority Guide.
1.1.2 Alarms/Warnings
At an alarm there is a sound which can be muted with the mute button down left at the SCU.
The Alarm LED will light and the displays will show information about the alarm. At
Warnings there is no sound but the Warning LED will be on (see chapter 3 in this guide).
NOTE: When a bridge equipment, which also is an item to be recorded, is turned off
intentionally, e.g. the radar or the speed log, there is automatically a warning. This is a

NOT CONNECTED USB memory stick in holder in MU
NOTE: When the saved data includes information which can be subject to an authority
investigation, to proof its unhampered origin, we strongly recommend not removing the
USB memory stick from the holder in the VDR, unless for intentionally giving access to
another incident/accident backup.
If the Incident button is pressed a second time without removing the USB memory
stick for copying to other media, there is a warning:
To be able to record data again the USB memory stick must be removed from and
replaced in its holder, or replaced by another USB memory stick delivered by
Consilium.
C. Replace the USB memory stick back into it’s holder in MU again
After a few seconds the red led over the Backup Button is on and the display goes
back to the view it had before the backup started.
NOTE: When the USB stick is replaced after it has been taken out from its holder in
MU, the VDR starts streaming data to it, erasing the oldest minutes first.
NOTE: If the USB is removed from its holder in MU without a previous Backup
procedure, it will include the latest 12 hrs period of data, up to that very minute.

4 Regulations
4.1 Purpose of VDR
According to IMO, the purpose of a Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) is to maintain a store, in a
secure and retrievable form, of information concerning the position, movement physical
status, command and control of a vessel over the period leading up to, and following, an
incident having an impact thereon. This information is for use during any subsequent
investigation to identify the cause(s) of the incident.
The VDR Main unit must be locked and the key shall be kept by a dedicated officer e.g. the
Master or Safety Officer of the ship. The recording must be terminated only
• during essential maintenance purposes whilst the vessel is in port
• when the vessel is laid-up
All breaks and other interruptions in the normal VDR M4 operation are recorded in special
log and event files, which are not erased after 12 hours.
16 (22)
çConsilium User Guide Doc No. 709543B1
recorded information. During the course of an investigation, the investigator shall have
custody of the original VDR information in the same way that the investigator will have
custody of other records and evidence under the Code for Investigation of Marine Causalities
and Incidents.
The procedure how to save and download data is described in chapter 2, Incidents and
Accidents. How to replay data is described in the Professional Player Guide. A special
instruction for investigation officials is described in the Investigative Authority Guide.
The APT for Consilium VDR’s is performed by Consilium technicians approved by the
classification society and/or national maritime organization of the vessel’s flag state. APT
shall be ordered directly to Consilium Navigation in Nacka Sweden or via local Consilium
service agent.
All APT performed on Consilium VDR’s is managed from and registered in Consilium
Navigation Service Center in Nacka, Sweden. A unique numbered certificate is issued for
each APT and is only valid if signed by a technician approved by and listed at Consilium
Navigation.

MSC/Circ.1024
29 May 2002
I The Maritime Safety Committee, at its seventy-fifth session (IS to 24 May 2002), approved the
annexed Guidelines on voyage data recorder (VDR) ownership and recovery which have been
developed to support provisions of the revised SOLAS regulation VIIS, as amended by resolution
MSC.99(73), and, in particular, to support the carriage requirements for voyage data recorders
contained in the revised SOLAS regulation V 120, which are expected to enter into force on I July
2002.
2 These Guidelines reflect the five basic issues relevant to VDR ownership and recovery, which are
ownership, custody, recovery, read-out and access to the VDR information, as envisaged by the
revised SOLAS chapter V.
3 In view of the complexity of the matter, close co-ordination and co-operation among interested
parties, as appropriate, in any recovery operation of a VDR is encouraged.
4 Member Governments are invited to bring the annexed Guidelines to the attention of all parties
concerned.

MSC/Circ.1024
1 The ship owner will, in all circumstances and at all times, own the VDR and its information.
However, in the event of an accident the following guidelines would apply. The owner of the ship
should make available and maintain all decoding instructions necessary to recover the recorded
information.
2 Recovery of the VDR is conditional on the accessibility of the VDR or the information
contained therein.
1. Recovery of the VDR information should be undertaken as soon as possible after an accident
to best preserve the relevant evidence for use by both the investigator¹ and the ship owner.
As the investigator is very unlikely to be in a position to instigate this action soon enough
after the accident, the owner must be responsible, through its on-board standing orders, for
ensuring the timely preservation of this evidence.
2. In the case of abandonment of a vessel during an emergency, masters should, where time and
other responsibilities permit, take the necessary steps to preserve the VDR information until
it can be passed to the investigator.
3. Where the VDR is inaccessible and the information has not been retrieved prior to
abandonment, a decision will need to be taken by the flag State in co-operation with any
other substantially interested states² on the viability and cost of recovering the VDR balanced
against the potential use of the information. If it is decided to recover the VDR the
investigator should be responsible for coordinating its recovery. The possibility of the
capsule having sustained damage must be considered and specialist expertise will be required
to ensure the best chance of recovering and preserving the evidence. In addition, the
assistance and co-operation of the owners, insurers and the manufacturers of the VDR and
those of the protective capsule may be required.
3 In all circumstances, during the course of an investigation, the investigator should have
custody of the original VDR information in the same way that the investigator would have custody of
other records or evidence under the Code for the Investigation of Marine Casualties and Incidents.
1. The term investigator refers to the Marine Casualty Investigator as per the term of the Code for
Investigation of Marine Casualties and Incidents.
2. Refer to paragraph 4.11 for the Investigation of Marine Casualties and Incidents, as adopted by
resolution A.849(20).

ANNEX
Page 2
4 In all circumstances the investigator is responsible to arrange downloading and read-out of the
information and should keep the ship owner fully informed. In some cases, the assistance of
specialist expertise may be required.
5 A copy of the VDR information must be provided to the ship owner at an early stage in all
circumstances.
6 Further access to the information will be governed by the applicable domestic legislation of the flag
State, coastal State and other substantially interested States as appropriate and the guidelines given in
the Code for the Investigation of Marine Casualties and Incidents.
7 Any disclosure of VDR information should be in accordance with section 10 of the Code for the
Investigation of Marine Casualties and Incidents.

All data, configuration files and event files in the VDR can easily be displayed in the program. Most
information is presented in pictures, values or status corresponding to the value or status shown on
the bridge. Some of them are shown on animated meters and displays similar to that on the bridge.
The presented information is split in the Player in following preset sections for easy overview,
finding and comparison of essential data:
• Video Radar(s) and other video displays if recorded
• Navigation/Manoeuvring Position, Heading, Speed, Depth, Engine controls etc.
• Alarms/Indications Bridge Main Alarms, Door indicators
• Composite/Animation Presentation of data on displays and meters like on bridge
The Voyage Data Professional Player is designed for replays where a general apprehension is needed
of an accident or incident, in what order episodes has happened and actions has been taken etc. All
recorded data can be presented as requested by IMO regulations for VDR and S-VDR.
For detailed investigation purposes Consilium has developed an extended Voyage Data Player:
Consilium Voyage Data Analyzing Player. That player has special enhanced functions for analyzing
and penetration of the recorded data such as: Fast, slow, and static mode presentation, raw data and
graphic data presentation, search functions etc.
For detailed information and ordering of the Consilium Voyage data Analyzing Player, please
contact Consilium Navigation, Nacka, Sweden or your own Consilium Agent.
After the installation is finished, there will be a Player icon on your desktop and a Consilium item on
the Start menu.
2.2 Passwords
The VDR Player is password protected. Two levels of access are provided:
• Limited access; excluding audio data. The audio indicator will not be shown.
• Full access: including audio data
When the VDR Player is initially started, the user must supply a user name, an activation code and
a password. The password is used to define the access level for the current session. If all entered
information is correct the Player will start. Only the password will be required at all subsequent
start-ups. Activation information will be assigned to registered users only.

The VDR M4 Investigation Authority Guide is mainly intended for use by an investigative body.
It contains information on how to download data from the VDR M4 and necessary information about
the downloaded data.
1.2 Equipment
• PC (Laptop) see 4.1 System Requirements.
• Standard Ethernet (CAT 5E) cable and passwords are needed.
• For L3 capsule: Software L3HVRReader.exe
- Consilium Voyage Data Professional Player (VDPP) is available for downloading from sent
out CD.
- Consilium Voyage Data Analyzing Player (VDAP) can be ordered from Consilium
Navigation AB.
Optionally other connected input sources can also be recorded, i.e. other radar-, ECDIS-, conning-
displays, ITV, etc. Such data are normally not stored on the capsule memory, but on other internal or
external e.g. on a Portable Black Box (PBB).
Downloading data will not interrupt the VDR M4 saving of data on the capsule.
4 (14)
ÇConsilium Investigative Authority Guide Doc No. 709545B1
NOTE! When there is a risk that a capsule has been exposed to such damage Consilium
Navigation AB must be contacted before trying to restore data from it.
5 (14)
ÇConsilium Investigative Authority Guide Doc No. 709545B1
NOTE: Directory name (data/vdr) and subdirectories “above” copied directories must then be
created and named “00” to make it possible for the Voyage Data Player software to identify the
data.
NOTE: Do not download data when VDR is recording to the capsule type B
2.3 Saved Accident/Incident data by removing and copying the USB stick
When current capsule data has been saved on the USB memory (via an Accident/Incident Backup
procedure, see User Guide) the USB stick can be removed and put into and copied to any external PC
(Laptop) memory.
NOTE: The VDR records data to the USB memory stick. In order to safely remove the USB
stick follow the Accident/Incident procedure. If the USB is removed from its holder in Main
Unit without a previous Backup procedure, data might be missing or be corrupt.
NOTE: When the USB stick is put back into the VDR holder, the saving process of the capsule
memory starts directly, and the previous data will be gradually removed from the USB stick.
6 (14)
ÇConsilium Investigative Authority Guide Doc No. 709545B1
2.4 Saved Accident/Incident data by copying the USB stick via Ethernet
output
When current capsule data has been saved on the USB memory (via an Accident/incident
backup procedure) and the stick has not been removed or replaced, the data can be copied to a
portable PC (Laptop) via an Ethernet output as follows:
1. Connect the Ethernet cable to a free socket in the VDR M4 switch (ETU).
2. Change the IP address of your computer to: “192.168.5.10 and Subnet mask:
255.255.255.0” (see Annex 5.1 - “Change IP”).
3. Select Map Network Drive (see Annex 5.2 - “Map Network Drive”).
4. A User name and Password is requested, separately received from Consilium Navigation
AB.
5. Download data as follows:
o For a total USB stick backup, copy whole “data” or “vdr” directory to a prepared directory
on the connected PC (Laptop).
o If a selected time window shall be downloaded. Study the file structure under 3.3 below and
find the relevant sequence of sub directories corresponding to required time window.
NOTE: Directory name (data/vdr) and subdirectories “above” copied directories must then
be created and named “00” to make it possible for the Voyage Data Player software to
identify the data.
3 Data structure
3.1 File Types
All data is recorded when received or at preset intervals, and stored in folders for each minute of the
hour. All input data is written in the form of digital files. It takes the following form:
• Navigational data, depth, speed, IEC 61162/NMEA-compatible data, etc., is stored as text
files once per minute. The VDR M4 makes no attempt to decode the NMEA data, it just stores
it. At viewing time, it is up to the player application to decode the NMEA protocol data and
display it.
• Sound information from microphones, VHF communications, etc., is stored in the form of
compressed MPEG1 layer 2 sound files, once per minute, one for each of the four mixer
output channels.
• Video from radar and other high-resolution video sources is stored as JPEG files once every
15 seconds, in one file for each of the input channels.
• Ship specific data and configuration of the data needed for replaying are saved as
configuration text files (VDR config).
7 (14)
ÇConsilium Investigative Authority Guide Doc No. 709545B1
• On the capsule type A and C the data is stored with a file structure in the FRM as explained
below.
• On the capsule type B the data is converted and stored in another format in the FRM. When
downloading the data from the FRM, using the software (HVR reader), the data is reverted to
the file structure explained below.
• On the USB memory stick the data is stored with a file structure as? in the FRM as explained
below.
The lowest level in the file structure consists of a compressed folder named .zip.
All files are stored in a common directory structure on the hard disk consisting of:
One-minute directories for each stored minute of information, containing the audio channel files, high-
res video, low-res video files, and the VDR event.log file containing text.
• 100 (00-99) one-minute directories put into hundred-minute directories.
• 100 (00-99) one-million-minute directories put into the \VDR main directory.
There is no way of telling the exact time that data was recorded by looking at the directory names. The
time stamps are in the VDR event.log file of each minute directory. The interpretation of the data
8 (14)
ÇConsilium Investigative Authority Guide Doc No. 709545B1
should be left to the Voyage Data Player. After 12 hours of data has been stored, the oldest data is
removed as the next minute is recorded.
3.2.1 File Names
The VDR event.log file containing time stamped NMEA data, system events, fault messages and other
text data has this name format:
VDR event.log
Example:
D:\VDR\00\00\01\47\VDRevent.log
Sound files containing mpeg 1 layer 2 encoded audio information are named after the mixer channel
whose data they contain, and ending in a .mp2 extension.
The file name format looks like this:
Audio[c]_[nnnnnnnnnn].mp2
where [c] is the channel number (1-4) and [n...n] is a system-generated ten-digit serial number.
Example:
D:\VDR\00\00\03\32\Audio2_1234567890.mp2
HiRes Video files containing radar images are named after the video channel whose data they contain,
and ending in a .jpg extension.
The file name format looks like this without Radar Grabber Unit (RGU):
HiRes[c]_[nnnnnnnnnn].jpg
where [c] is the channel number (0-3) and [n...n] is a system-generated ten-digit serial number.
Example:
D:\VDR\00\00\12\92\HiRes3_9087654321.jpg
Low-Res Video files containing close-circuit TV images are named after the video channel whose data
they contain, and ending in a .jpg extension.
The file name format looks like this:
cctv[c]_[nnnnnnnnnn].jpg
where [c] is the channel number (arbitrary number) and [n...n] is a system-generated ten-digit serial
number.
Example:
D:\VDR\00\00\09\72\cctv4_9087654321.jpg

The information is presented in a user-friendly Windows interface, where different sensors are
displayed in different windows. All information, including audio playback, is synchronized in time and
simultaneously replayed.
With the VDP it is possible to locate an event or a time sequence of interest using various search
methods. It is possible to run the playback in normal, reverse, fast or step mode. It is easy to access data
by date and time.
The Voyage Data Player can be ordered from Consilium Navigation AB. Part number 707015.

ÇConsilium Main Unit Installation Guide Doc No. 709546B1
• If the specifications state “twisted pair”, such cable should be used. Using any other cable
type will void warranty
• If the specifications state a screen should be used, either an aluminium foil screen with an
inlaid, blank, stranded conductor, or tinned copper braid should be used.
It is recommended to use a cable with numbered conductors. This makes identification much
easier, and minimizes the risk of miss-connections.
It is recommended to use cable with coloured conductors, preferable one red part for the positive
voltage and one black part for negative return.
2.1.2.1 NOISE
All cables with two or more parts are twisted (stranded) for manufacturing reasons. This does not
mean any two-conductor cable is a twisted pair.
• “Twisted pair” means two separated and isolated wires, twisted together in a special noise-
cancelling configuration.
• “Two twisted pairs” means two separate sets of such two wires, twisted together, not four
wires twisted together.
The twisted pair is a unit that by its twist protects itself from the environment, and protects the
environment (such as, the pair next to it) from itself. The pitch of the twist is carefully calculated
to maximize the noise-cancelling properties, which is not the case with ordinary multi-pole cable.
Thus, when using “Two twisted pairs” make sure using the two wires twisted together and not one
wire from each twisted pair.
Do not use twisted quads or ordinary multi-pole cable, which also has somewhat twisted parts.
In a twisted quad the signals in one pair will cross-couple to the other pair, because they are so
close, and because one pair has no means of protecting itself from the other pair. In an ordinary
multi-pole cable, the noise-cancelling properties are random or unknown i.e. cross-coupling
between the individual wires is bound to occur.
2.1.2.2 EMI
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) is everywhere. It is the unwanted signal component that
disrupts a system, creates unwanted noise in the audio channels, or causes the system to go down
6 (14)
ÇConsilium Main Unit Installation Guide Doc No. 709546B1
at irregular intervals. If EMI is not counter-acted at installation time, it will be very costly to
troubleshoot and change the system later. Intermittent faults with an EMI background can be
impossible to find.
The S-VDR/VDR MU has been designed and tested with EMI protection in mind, but defective
wiring may destroy that protection.
All signal cables must be connected carefully and by using described method depending on
type of connection block terminal.
1. Where the connection block terminals are of press-type we recommend to use bare
wires
2. Where the connection block terminals are of screw-type we recommend to press end-
caps on the bare wire ends as described below
The free ends should be as short as possible, preferably around 10 – 15 millimetres. This tends to
make connecting more difficult, but greatly reduces the risk of EMI induction.
The end caps must be crimped with the proper tool to attain a proper connection. Never use pliers
or crimp-tools intended for anything else than end caps.
Examples of proper tools for crimping end caps, and a strip of end caps
7 (14)
ÇConsilium Main Unit Installation Guide Doc No. 709546B1
2.1.2.4 SHIELDS
Grounding a screen “for safety” or “for good measure” could be ruin noise immunity. Forming a
ground loop will let noise slip into the system.
NOTE: Shields shall be connected at the cable inlet tubes inside the Main Unit except for
Microphone terminals, VHF terminals, Auxiliary audio input and Radar.
The chassis (bulkhead) potential is never the same in both ends of the cable. Although the ship is
made of steel, large currents flowing through the hull may easily generate a potential difference of
several volts between different sections of the ship. The result is that noise current will start
flowing from the “high” end of the screen to the “low” end, maybe several amperes. On the way,
it will induce into the signal leads, causing signal degradation and improper operation of the S-
VDR/VDR system.
Where there is a risk that the shield wire can make short circuit to anything, solder traces, other
wires, chassis, bulkhead, etc., it must be protected with a slip-on plastic tube or shrink tubing.
Remember that the screen is not meant to carry any current or signal, it is only a screen.

A new directory is also created when PBB or VDR is restarted (so directories with arbitrary time
in the names are possible: e.g. 070320-1739 followed by 070320-1800).
Note: Time used for data division is a PBB time (synchronisation with VDR time will be
implemented in the PBB software version 1.3).
