Hey Guys!
I made an outdoor sofa from 2x4s and I tried to keep the build as simple as possible so anyone can build one. Watch my
build video and follow my step by step instructables to make your so you can enjoy Summer!!! ☀
Why it is the most easy sofa build?
- No pocket holes
- Only straight cuts
- Only 2 power tools ( Drill and Circular Saw )
- Made with 2x4s and 1x6s
- Complete material and cut list
- Step by Step Instructables with free plans included
To make the build easier, some screw will be visible so to make them less visible, I use GRK trim screws. They are high
quality screw, made for outdoor projects, and the head of the screw is smaller than average to help them be less visible. I
think the result will prove you that it can still look pretty good with visible screw and after all, it is an outdoor project!

Step 1: Cutting List
Here is the cutting list, all measurements are also on the picture so you can have a visual of the material at the same time.
I also added a sketch up picture of the material and cut lines on the 2x4s so you know what to cut on each piece of wood
to end with minimal waste, you will end up with one 2x4 of 12 inches long.
Don't forget that real dimensions of a 2x4 is 1.5 x 3.5 inches.
Cutting List :
[5x] 2x4x47''
[4x] 1x6x47''
[4x] 2x4x27''
[6x] 2x4x24''
[4x] 2x4x22.5''
[4x] 2x4x20.5''

Step 4: Assembling the Center With the Sides
I assemble the top of the center part with the top of the third 2x4 we just installed with the bigger GRK screws. To to do, I
simply put the sofa on the side, so I don't need any clamps to hold both pieces in the right position.
Then , I put a couple screw to x both parts together. I repeat on the other side!

Step 5: Testing!
How can't describe this photo! You mush watch the video! But i told you, this sofa build is STURDY! And we still need to
complete the back, that will make the sofa more sturdy!

Step 6: Back of the Sofa ( Part 1 )
I'm adding a piece of 47" to the back that I screw with two GRK screw on each side. I use a piece of plywood and a clamp
to hold my piece in place while I screw it.

Step 7: Back of the Sofa ( Part 2 )
For the last two pieces, I joint them together with 5 GRK screw. Then, I joint them to my sofa with some GRK screw, two
from the sides on each side, and one at an angle from the back, again for both sides.

Step 8: Sanding!
Because I said it is a two power tools project! Than mean I have to sand by hand! But, you can cheat and use an electric
sander!

Simple and very detailed design. Anyone can follow this. Well done!
This is a nice project and simple enough for most anyone to build. However, a chair or sofa is
much more comfortable if the back is tilted about 100 to 110 degrees from the seat. This minor
adjustment would be relatively simple to implement and make for a more comfortable sofa or
chair.
You did an excellent job with your material cut list and the video demonstrating the build.
You are so talented! You explain things and make it look so easy! Thank you for the video!
Very cool! I love its simplicity. Your well-written instructable is clear and easy to follow. Thank you
for sharing!
Thank you! :) Hope it help anyone build one!
Thanks! :)
I am most impressed with your ability to find so much STRAIGHT lumber in 2x4s. I could shop all
day, visiting 3-4 lumber yards, and not find that much straight lumber. Good job!
Haha yeah they are not easy to find. Best thing is to find a fresh opened bundle, ideally in an
exterior lumber yard, it is easier to find some straight 2x4s. But then, when you arrive home, you
need to start your project because if you wait overnight they will mostly be all warped!
Yes, it's difficult to get straight lumber but the shorter you cut the pieces the straighter they get.
An 8' 2x4 with 1/2" bow in it is only out 1/8" once cut to 2' pieces. Save the straightest ones for
longest needs.
Love this and your instructions are very clear. Thank you
Thanks! :)
This is a beginner project - thanks for sharing. The result is really beautiful and simple :)
Thank you! :)
About time some one showed basic carpentry skills. GOOD FOR YOU!!
Thank you, trying to make some basic projects so anyone can build it! :)
