What is Language?
The principal method of human communication,
consisting of words used in a structured and
conventional way and conveyed by speech, writing,
or gesture.

Languages are the primary means of communication


of humans, and can be conveyed through speech,
sign, or writing.
LANGUAGE REGISTER Individual's language
registers may occur in the
following:

In addition, language varieties may also be grouped in
the following classifications :
Pidgin. It refers to a new language that develops into
situations where speakers of different languages need to
communicate but do not share a common language.

Pidgins are a mixture of words from different languages, and


feature a simpler grammatucal structure and smaller
vocabulary.
Examples are chavacano in the philippines and Bislama , a
language spoken in Vanuatu.
Creole. It is a pidgin that becomes the first language of the children ,or the mother
tongue of a certain community .

Is a stable natural language that develops from the simplifying and mixing of
different languages into a new one within a fairly brief period of time: often, pidgin
evolved into a full-fledged language

Examples are the Gullah and the Patwa , is a creole in Jamaica.


Regional Dialect.
It is not a language that is not distinct from a national
language ,but rather a variety of a language spoken in a particular area a
country .
Examples are as Cebuano, Waray, Ilocano, and Hilogaynon in
the Philippines.
Minority Dialect. This is a variety used as a marker of identity,
usually alongside a standard variety, by the members of a
particular minority ethnic group.
Examples are the Sinama of the Badjaos in the Philippines and the
London-Jamaican variety in Britain

Indigenized Varieties These are spoken mainly as second Languages


in former colonies with multilingual populations.

A classes example is Singlish (or Singaporean English)

Local everyday written - everyday written usage found in the
neighborhood posters —-poster looking for transients/bed spacers.

Local everyday oral may occur in local communication among


neighbors in everyday, informal and local varieties of languages.

Local specialized written—those that can be found in the publications


and web sites of local societies such as the Baguio Midland Courier.

Local specialized oral involves specialized discourses — computer


shop in the neighood/computer game related vocabulary
Global everyday written avoids local colloquialisms wider communities of readers
—- can be found in international editions newspapers and magazines.

Global everyday oral may occur— interactions between people coming from
different parts of the world — when they talk about everyday casual topics.

Global specialized written expands to as many readers internationally,hence the


non usage of local colloquial expressions —international research journal articles
.

Global specialized oral —occurs when people from different of the world discuss
specialized topics in spoken form—paper presentation sessions in an
international academic conference.
Language registers can be classified as:
Formal.
These registers are used in
professional, academic or legal settings
where communication is expected to be
respectful, uninterrupted,and restrained to
specific rules. Slang is never used and
contractions are rare.

Used in official and ceremonial settings the


language being used is standard ,
impersonal and formal.
INFORMAL & FORMAL WORDS FORMAL LANGUAGE INFORMAL LANGUAGE
Language registers can be classified as:

Casual.These registers are used when


communicationg with friends, close
acquintances , colleaguess, and family
members. These are used in birthday parties or
family gatherings.

Informal and relaxed


- a language used by friends
- Colloquialisms are normal in conventions
- PAST experience with the person
Language registers can be classified as:
Consultative. It is used in conversation when people
are speaking with someone who has specialized
knowledge or is offering advice.

Tone is often respectful, such as the use of


honorifics or courtesy titles.

Maintains a professional tone.

Used in a professional discourse --- two way


communication used in conversation.

No past experiences or acquaintances with person.


Language registers can be classified as:

Frozen. Refers to language that is


intended to remain unchanged.

The variety of language used in this style


is fixed.

It is often learned and repeated by rote.

It does not require any feedback.


Language registers can be classified as:

Intimate. it registers are reserved for


special occasions, usually between only
two people and often in private.

Language shared between couples,


twins, and very close friends.

Private and interpersonal.

Aggressive Style
Shown in forceful, demanding and hostile
manner

It usually involves intimidating or bullying people

Manifested with unpleasant, frightening facial


expression

The voice tone is threatening, sarcastic, explosive,


loud, and hostile

Avoid expressing their


thoughts and emotions

Do not talk even if the


situation calls for it
