1 Introducing SequeLink ODBC

Edition Client

This chapter introduces SequeLink ODBC Edition Client and its

components, and provides information about system
requirements.

What is SequeLink ODBC Edition Client?

SequeLink ODBC Edition Client is a universal client component
which includes an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) driver. It
provides direct, point-to-point connections from client to server,
removing the need for gateways and database-vendor
middleware. The thin-client architecture eases installation and
administration, and prevents client conflicts with multiple
Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs), databases, and network stacks.

ODBC calls are sent across your network from SequeLink clients
to the SequeLink Server service, which passes the requests to the
Server database engine. The database engine processes the requests
and passes the results back to the SequeLink Server service,
which returns them to the client.

Notes:

1 SequeLink OLE DB Edition supports OLE DB applications. For

more information about SequeLink OLE DB Edition, refer to
the SequeLink OLE DB Edition Client Installation Guide and
the SequeLink OLE DB Provider Reference.

2 SequeLink Java Edition supports JDBC applications. For

Mounting your MERANT DataDirect CD

This section provides CD mounting instructions for your
SequeLink ODBC Edition Client platform.

Windows NT/Windows 9x
Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 9x provide the system option
AutoPlay for CDs as a default feature. If enabled, the installer
starts immediately when you insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive.

If you have AutoPlay for CDs disabled or you will be mounting

the CD on a network drive:
1 Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive. If you have a local
CD-ROM drive, this typically is drive D. If the CD-ROM drive is
on a network, mount the CD and create a mapping to the
CD-ROM drive.

2 To view the contents of the CD, double-click the CD-ROM

drive icon in the Windows File Manager (Windows 3.1x
interface) or My Computer window (Windows 9x interface).

Windows 3.1x
1 Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive. If you have a local
CD-ROM drive, this typically is drive D. If the CD-ROM drive is
on a network, mount the CD and create a mapping to the
CD-ROM drive.

Mounting your MERANT DataDirect CD 31

UNIX
Mount the CD as a file system. The following examples assume
that the /cdrom mount point is available on your UNIX system. If
not, replace /cdrom with a valid mount point.

AIX
mount -r -v cdrfs /dev/device /cdrom

where device is the device name assigned to your CD-ROM

drive. The device name can be found using the AIX tool smit.

HP-UX
Log in as root, and enter the following command:

mount -F cdfs -o cdcase device_name mount_point

For example, if the device name for your CD-ROM is

/dev/dsk/c0t4d0 and you want to mount it over the directory
/cdrom, you would enter the following command:

mount -F cdfs -o cdcase /dev/dsk/c0t4d0 /cdrom

Solaris
On Solaris, CDs automatically mount when inserted in the
CD-ROM drive.

Macintosh
Insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive. An icon representing the
CD-ROM is displayed on your desktop.

32 Chapter 3 Installing SequeLink ODBC Edition Client

Installing for Windows 9x/Windows NT and

Windows
You can install SequeLink ODBC Edition Client using any of the
following options:

■ Default. This installation option is recommended for most

users. The installer automatically detects which protocol
stacks are available and installs the corresponding SequeLink
network modules. For example, if the installer detects the
Microsoft SNA Server protocol stack, the SequeLink for
Microsoft SNA Server network module will be installed.
Additionally, the installer automatically installs the SequeLink
ODBC Driver and the SequeLink CAT.

■ Custom. This installation option is for advanced users only,

and allows you to customize your installation. The installer
will automatically include the SequeLink ODBC Driver and the
SequeLink CAT. You can select additional SequeLink
components to install, such as the SequeLink Dictionary
Manager or SequeLink Data Source SyncTool Administrator.

■ Create a Quick Install Image. This installation option is for

administrators who want to create a Quick Install image. A
Quick Install image is a predefined, customized image that
can be used to install the same SequeLink ODBC Edition Client
configuration, including data source definitions, on multiple
workstations. Installing the Quick Install image requires
minimal user interaction. This option can help you ensure that
all SequeLink clients in your organization or workgroup are
installed and configured in the same way.

For instructions on creating Quick Install images, refer to the

SequeLink Administrator’s Guide.

Installing On a UNIX Workstation

Without a CD-ROM Drive
Installing SequeLink ODBC Edition Client on a UNIX workstation
without a CD-ROM drive involves the following steps:

■ Transferring files to your UNIX workstation

■ Extracting the files
■ Running the installation script
■ Setting up the SequeLink environment for your users

If your workstation does not have a CD-ROM drive, you must

mount the CD on another computer with a CD-ROM drive and
transfer the tar file in binary format to your UNIX workstation
using file transfer software (for example, FTP). After the tar file is
transferred to your UNIX workstation, extract the files from the
tar file and run the installation script.

Installing for UNIX 51

Transferring Files to Your UNIX Workstation

1 Mount the CD on a computer with a CD-ROM drive and FTP
capability.

2 Log on the UNIX workstation where you want to install the

SequeLink ODBC Edition Client software.

3 Create a temporary directory on the UNIX workstation. This

directory will be used to run the installation script and can be
deleted after installation. For example, enter:

mkdir /tmp/sqlnk
4 On the system from which you will be transferring the files,
change to the directory on the CD that applies to your system
and client. For example, to install SequeLink ODBC Edition
Client on Solaris, change to the directory
sequelnk/solaris/client on the CD.

5 From this system, initiate the file transfer of the file

slclient.tar (in binary format) to the temporary directory you
created in Step 3.

How you transfer files from another system to your UNIX

workstation depends on your TCP/IP product and your
system’s operating system (Macintosh, Windows, or UNIX).
For more information about transferring files, refer to the
documentation supplied with your TCP/IP product.

Important: Transfer the files in binary format. If you transfer

files in the wrong format, the installation will fail.

Extracting SequeLink ODBC Edition Client Files

On your UNIX workstation, access the tar file you transferred to
the temporary directory and extract it. For example, enter:

tar -xvf slclient.tar

5 Establishing a Connection

This chapter provides information about the basic steps you

need to perform to establish a connection after you have
successfully installed SequeLink ODBC Edition Client.

Before you try to establish a connection, make sure that you

have installed SequeLink Server on a server. On your client, you
must install at least one of the following SequeLink clients:

■ SequeLink ODBC Edition Client. For information about

installing SequeLink ODBC Edition Client, see Chapter 3,
“Installing SequeLink ODBC Edition Client.”

■ SequeLink OLE DB Edition Client. For information about

installing the SequeLink OLE DB Provider, refer to the
SequeLink OLE DB Edition Client Installation Guide.

■ SequeLink Java Edition Client. For information about

installing the SequeLink Java Edition Client, refer to the
SequeLink Java Edition Client Installation Guide.

To establish a connection:
1 Make sure that your SequeLink Server service and database is
running.

After installing SequeLink Server, your SequeLink Server

service should be running and ready to accept connection
requests from SequeLink clients. If you are unsure whether a
particular service is running, contact your system
administrator.

If you are unsure whether your database is running, contact

your database administrator.

64 Chapter 5 Establishing a Connection

2 Using a SequeLink client, test the connection to your

SequeLink Server service:

■ If using the SequeLink ODBC Driver: On a SequeLink client,

use the SequeLink CAT to create a data source and test a
connection with your SequeLink Server service. For
information about using the SequeLink CAT to test
connections, refer to the SequeLink Administrator’s Guide.

■ If using the SequeLink OLE DB Provider: On a SequeLink

client, use the SequeLink CAT to create a data source and
test a connection with your SequeLink Server service. For
information about using the SequeLink CAT to test
connections, refer to the SequeLink Administrator’s Guide.

■ If using the SequeLink JDBC Driver: On a SequeLink client,

use JDBCTest to test the connection with your SequeLink
Server service. For information about using JDBCTest to
test connections, refer to the SequeLink JDBC Driver
Reference.

3 If the connection test was successful, you can start using

SequeLink with your applications.

SequeLink can be used by any ODBC-, OLE DB-, and JDBC-

compliant application. For more information about:

■ Using SequeLink with ODBC applications, refer to the

SequeLink ODBC Driver Reference for Windows 3.1x or the
SequeLink ODBC Driver Reference for Windows 9x,
Windows NT, UNIX, and Macintosh.

■ Using SequeLink with OLE DB applications, refer to the

SequeLink OLE DB Provider Reference.

■ Using SequeLink with JDBC applications, refer to

SequeLink JDBC Driver Reference.
