Preface

This book describes the procedure for installing DataDirect®

Connect JDBC™ by DataDirect Technologies from a CD-ROM or
downloaded files.

What Is DataDirect Connect JDBC?

DataDirect Connect JDBC consists of Type 4 JDBC drivers that
enable you to connect to a variety of databases from the Java
platform running on operating systems that support Java.

If you purchased the Connect JDBC Pack, you can install any or
all of the drivers. If you purchased Connect JDBC Single Driver,
you can install only one driver per machine for the number of
licenses purchased.

Using This Book

This book can be used by system and database administrators
and any users who need JDBC drivers to access databases. It is
assumed that you are familiar with the operation of your system,
and that you understand how to navigate to directories on your
system and on any networks attached to your system.

This book explains how to install DataDirect Connect JDBC on a

local drive under Windows and UNIX operating systems.

For the latest information about the specific DataDirect drivers

available for your platform, see the README file in your

environments that use case-sensitive file names, the
correct capitalization is used in information specific
to those environments.
Also indicates keys or key combinations that you can
use. For example, press the ENTER key.
monospace Indicates syntax examples, values that you specify, or
results that you receive.
monospaced Indicates names that are placeholders for values that
italics you specify. For example, filename.

Connect JDBC Installation Guide

About Connect JDBC Documentation 7

Convention Explanation
forward slash / Separates menus and their associated commands. For
example, Select File / Copy means that you should
select Copy from the File menu.
The slash also separates directory levels when
specifying locations under UNIX.
vertical rule | Indicates an "OR" separator used to delineate items.
brackets [ ] Indicates optional items. For example, in the
following statement: SELECT [DISTINCT], DISTINCT is
an optional keyword.
Also indicates sections of the Windows Registry.
braces { } Indicates that you must select one item. For example,
{yes | no} means that you must specify either yes or
no.
ellipsis . . . Indicates that the immediately preceding item can
be repeated any number of times in succession. An
ellipsis following a closing bracket indicates that all
information in that unit can be repeated.

2 Installation of Connect JDBC

Before you start installation, verify that your system meets the
specified requirements. Refer to Chapter 1, “Before You Install,”
on page 13 for a list of these requirements.

Online books are placed on your system during normal

installation of Connect JDBC. They are located in the books
directory that is created beneath the installed driver directory.
HTML-based online help is also placed on your system during
normal installation of Connect JDBC. It is located in the help
directory that is created beneath the installed driver directory.
See “About Connect JDBC Documentation” on page 7 for
details.

Installation
NOTE: Be sure that the Java Virtual Machine is on your path. The
minimum requirement for installation is JDK version 1.2; JDK 1.4
is required for the drivers to use JDBC 3.0 features.

Before beginning, choose an installer directory for the Connect

JDBC installer. This can also be the installation directory for the
drivers, but does not have to be. You can choose another
installation directory during the installation procedure. Do not
delete the Connect JDBC installer after the initial installation;
you may need it later to license a driver.

To install Connect JDBC on your local drive:

1 Locate the Connect JDBC jar file, connectjdbc.jar, in the /jdbc

directory on the DataDirect CD or on the DataDirect Web site
http://www.datadirect-technologies.com/jdbc/jdbc.asp. Copy

Connect JDBC Installation Guide

18 Chapter 2 Installation of Connect JDBC

or download the jar file to the installer directory that you

have chosen.

2 Switch to the installer directory and use one of the following

two methods to extract the contents of the file:

■ On Windows: Use the WinZip utility to open the

connectjdbc.jar file. Extract the contents of the jar file to
the installer directory.

■ On Windows or other operating systems: At a command

prompt, change to the installer directory and unjar the
contents of the jar file by entering the following
command:

jar xvf connectjdbc.jar

Either method extracts the necessary files into the installer
directory.

3 You must run the License Tool to complete the installation. Do

one of the following:

■ If you prefer to use a Graphical User Interface (GUI), go to

“GUI Installation” on page 18 for instructions.

■ If you prefer to use a command line, go to

“Command-Line Installation” on page 21 for instructions.

GUI Installation
1 From the installer directory, execute either installer.bat
(Windows) or installer.sh (UNIX). The Connect JDBC Installer
window appears.

(If you prefer to start the installer from the command line,
enter:

java -cp JDBCInstaller.jar

com.ddtek.jdbc.jdbcinstaller.Installer
The Connect JDBC Installer window appears.)

Connect JDBC Installation Guide

Installation 19

2 Enter the path, including the drive letter on Windows

machines, of an installation (driver) directory in the
Installation Directory field, or click on the button (...) next to
the field and select an installation directory.

NOTE: The default value for the installation directory is the

directory from which the installer is running. Verify that you
have entered or selected the correct directory into which you
want to install the Connect JDBC drivers. If you have a
previous version of Connect JDBC installed on the same
machine, you must specify a directory different from the one
for the previous version.

3 Select one or more of the following options:

■ Install Components: Select this option to install Connect

JDBC. You must select this option the first time that you
run the installer; otherwise, the Connect JDBC
components will not be properly installed on your
machine. Selecting this option automatically runs the
Licensing Tool. Normally, you should not need to select
this option again after the initial installation.

■ Update License: Select this option to update license

information. If you initially install the components for
evaluation, you can later run the installer again, selecting
this option, and license one or more components for
standard use. In this case, be certain to select the
directory in the Installation Directory field where the
drivers were previously installed.

■ Create JCA Resource Adapters: Select this option if you

need to create Connect JDBC resource adapters to
connect to enterprise information systems through the
J2EE Connector Architecture (JCA). Select this option only
in conjunction with Install Components, or when running
the installer again after the components have been
installed. In the case of a previous installation, be certain
to select the directory in the Installation Directory field
where the drivers were previously installed.

Connect JDBC Installation Guide

20 Chapter 2 Installation of Connect JDBC

Then, click Next.

4 Do one of the following:

■ If you are only creating JCA resource adapters after having

previously installed the drivers, the installer completes the
process without displaying further windows. Skip to Step
8.

■ If you have selected Install Components or Update License,

the License Tool window appears. If you want to exit
before licensing, click Close to close the License Tool.
Drivers that have not been licensed will not function.

• For standard licensing, proceed to Step 5.

• For evaluation licensing, skip to Step 6.
5 For standard licensing, complete all of the fields as follows:

Key: Enter the product key provided to you by DataDirect

Technologies.

Driver: Select the appropriate item from the drop-down list:

pack
db2
db2OS390
informix
oracle
sqlserver
sybase

Pack includes all the drivers; the other options are

single-driver licenses.

6 For evaluation licensing, complete all of the fields as follows:

Key: Type EVAL (the default entry).

Driver: Select EVAL (the default entry) from the drop-down

list.

Connect JDBC Installation Guide

Installation 21

NOTE: Evaluation licensing automatically licenses all of the

drivers for evaluation. If you later want to use standard
licensing for one or more components, simply run the
installer again and select Update License.

7 Click Finish to complete licensing and close the License Tool

window.

8 Click Finished to close the Installer.

Command-Line Installation
1 You must first decide whether you want to install the drivers
in the same directory as the installer (the installer directory),
or in a separate installation directory.

■ If you want to install in the drivers in the installer

directory, skip to Step 3.

■ If you want to install in the drivers in separate installation

directory, proceed to Step 2.

2 If you want to install the drivers in a separate installation

directory, copy the file ddjdbc30.jar from the installer
directory to the installation directory.

3 Extract the drivers and other components from ddjdbc30.jar.

Change, if necessary, to the directory where you are
installing the drivers and enter:

jar xvf ddjdbc30.jar

The Connect JDBC files are unjarred in the correct structure

inside the directory.

4 Change, if necessary, to the installer directory.

■ If this is standard licensing, proceed to Step 5.

■ If this is evaluation licensing, skip to Step 6.

Connect JDBC Installation Guide

22 Chapter 2 Installation of Connect JDBC

5 Run the License Tool for standard licensing by specifying

switches on the command line. You must specify values for all
of the switches. Use the following syntax:

java -cp LicenseTool.jar com.ddtek.jdbc.licensetool.LicenseTool -k key -d

driver_package -i installation_directory
where:

key is the product key for a standard license, which is

provided to you by DataDirect.

driver_package is one of the following:

pack
db2
db2OS390
informix
oracle
sqlserver
sybase

Pack includes all the drivers; the other options are

single-driver licenses.

installation_directory is the full path, including the drive

letter on Windows machines, to the driver installation
directory.

NOTE: If the directory path contains spaces, you must use

double quotation marks around the path name, for example:

-i "/home/users/jdbc drivers/install"

Connect JDBC Installation Guide

Installation 23

To license the Sybase driver, for example, located in

/home/users/jdbc/install on a UNIX machine, you would enter
the following command:

java -cp LicenseTool.jar com.ddtek.jdbc.licensetool.LicenseTool -k productkey

-d sybase -i /home/users/jdbc/install
6 Run the License Tool for evaluation licensing by specifying
switches on the command line. You must specify values for all
the switches. Use the following syntax:

java -cp LicenseTool.jar com.ddtek.jdbc.licensetool.LicenseTool -k EVAL -d

EVAL -i installation_directory
where installation_directory is the full path, including the
drive letter on Windows machines, to the driver installation
directory.

NOTE: If the directory path contains spaces, you must use

double quotation marks around the path name, for example:

-i "c:\jdbc drivers\install"
For example, to complete evaluation licensing for drivers
located in c:\jdbc drivers\install, you would enter the
following command:

java -cp LicenseTool.jar com.ddtek.jdbc.licensetool.LicenseTool -k EVAL -d

EVAL -i "c:\jdbc drivers\install"
NOTE: Evaluation licensing automatically licenses all of the
drivers for evaluation. If you later want to use standard
licensing for one or more components, simply run the License
Tool again.

7 The installation is complete after running the License Tool.

Creating JCA Resource Adapters

1 Before creating resource adapters, verify that the Connect
JDBC drivers have been installed and licensed correctly. See
“Command-Line Installation” on page 21 for this procedure.

Connect JDBC Installation Guide

24 Chapter 2 Installation of Connect JDBC

2 Change to the installer directory, where the original installer

components are located.

3 Run the Resource Adapter Builder by using the following

syntax:

java –cp BuildAdapters.jar com.ddtek.jdbc.buildadapters.BuildAdapters

–i installation_directory
where:

installation_directory is the full path, including the drive

letter on Windows machines, to the driver installation
directory.

NOTE: If the directory path contains spaces, you must use

double quotation marks around the path name, for example:

-i "/home/users/jdbc drivers/install"

NOTE: If the Connect JDBC drivers were originally licensed for

evaluation, and you create resource adapters from them, the
resource adapters are also licensed for evaluation and will expire
at the end of the evalution period. If you later create drivers with
a standard license, you must also re-create the resource adapters
if you want them to have a standard license. To do this, run the
Resource Adapter Builder again and specify the directory where
the standard license drivers are located.

Configuring jXTransformer after Installation

After completing the installation, jXTransformer requires
additional configuration before it can be used.

Builder.bat and Builder.sh

Before you can use the jXTransformer Builder tool, you must
configure the startup script: builder.bat (Windows) or builder.sh
(UNIX). To configure the startup script, complete the following
steps:

1 Using a text editor, open the appropriate file, located in the

Connect JDBC installation directory under /jxtr.

2 Remove the comment marker from the line for the PATH
variable.

■ On Windows: change "rem set PATH=..." to "set

PATH=..."

■ On UNIX: change "# PATH=..." to "PATH=..."

26 Chapter 2 Installation of Connect JDBC

3 Set the PATH variable so that it allows access to the Java

Virtual Machine.

■ For Windows: change "PATH=<uncomment this line and

fill in the path to your JDK installation>;%PATH%" to the
installation path for your JDK or JRE. For example,

PATH=C:\JDK1_4\bin;%PATH%
■ For UNIX: change "PATH=<uncomment this line and fill in
the path to your JDK installation>;$PATH" to the
installation path for your JDK or JRE. For example,

PATH=/home/user1/JDK1_4/bin;$PATH
4 Save the file and use it to start the jXTransformer Builder.

3 Installing and Viewing Online

Books

The DataDirect CD and the DataDirect Technologies Web site

provide online books for the DataDirect Product Series. In
addition, they provide Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is required
to view the online books.

The Connect JDBC installer automatically installs the online

books beneath the Connect JDBC installation directory in a
directory named books.

This chapter explains how to:

■ Install the online books without using a product installer

■ View the online books
■ Customize the online books
■ Install Acrobat Reader from the CD

NOTE: Instructions for downloading the online books and

Acrobat Reader from the Web are provided on the DataDirect
Technologies Web site.

About DataDirect’s Online Books

You can view the online books from the CD or install them to a
local or network location. You must view the online books using
Acrobat Reader 3.x, or later, licensed from Adobe Systems. The
DataDirect CD includes Acrobat Reader 4.x with Search.

You can print the online books to create high-quality, hard-copy

books. While viewing an online book in the Acrobat Reader,

Connect JDBC Installation Guide

28 Chapter 3 Installing and Viewing Online Books

select File / Print to print the entire file (book), the current page,
or a range of pages.

Installing the Online Books

If you want to install the online books without using a product
installer, you must maintain the same directory structure that is
on the CD. You can install all the online books or specific ones:

■ To install all product books, copy the entire \books directory

to your local or network drive.

■ To install a specific set of books, copy that book’s directory

structure (beneath the \books directory) to your local or
network drive. For example, to install the Connect
ODBC books, you would copy the entire odbc directory
beneath the books directory (\books\odbc).

Viewing the Online Books

To help you navigate through a DataDirect product’s online
books, an Acrobat file, called books.pdf, is provided. This file lists
each online book provided for a product. We recommend that
you open this file first and, from this file, open the book you
want to view.

If you want to keep the books.pdf file open until you choose to
close it, go to the Reader menu bar and select File / Preferences /
General. Clear the check box for the Open Cross-Document Links
in Same Window option.

NOTE: If you do not already have Acrobat Reader installed, you

must install it before you can view the books. See “Installing
Acrobat Reader” on page 34 for details.

Connect JDBC Installation Guide

Viewing the Online Books 29

To view the online books:

1 Start Acrobat Reader in one of the following ways:

■ For Windows, click Start on the Taskbar and select

Programs. Select the Adobe Acrobat folder that was
created during the installation of the Acrobat Reader,
and click the Acrobat Reader icon.

■ For UNIX, you can start the Reader from the command
line by using its launch script:

• If the launch script directory is in the search path set by

the PATH environment variable, type the following to
start Acrobat Reader:
% acroread
• If the launch script directory is not set in the PATH
environment variable, type:
% /acrobatreaderinstalldir/bin/acroread
2 On the Reader menu bar, select File / Open, and choose the
path where the books.pdf file resides. For example, for
SequeLink:

D:\Program Files\DataDirect\slodbc51\books\slnk\books.pdf

or for Connect ODBC:

D:\Program Files\DataDirect\books\odbc\books.pdf

3 Click Open.

While viewing the online books, you can use hypertext links,
perform text searches, and use bookmarks.

Connect JDBC Installation Guide

30 Chapter 3 Installing and Viewing Online Books

Using Hypertext Links

Cross-reference links within online books allow you to jump to
related topics and other books within a product’s documentation
set. These links are displayed in blue and allow you to jump to a
cross reference with a single click of the mouse. Some links take
you to a URL on the DataDirect Technologies World Wide Web
site (if you have an HTML browser installed on your computer).
The page numbers in the table of contents and index are also
hypertext links.

Performing Text Searches

With Acrobat Reader with Search, you can perform full-text,
boolean searches across all of a product’s online books. You type
a query and Acrobat Reader displays the matching text.

NOTE: If you will be performing searches across online books on

the CD over a non-UNIX network, you must explicitly map to the
network drive that contains the CD to enable the Search tool.

The search indexes for DataDirect online books were created

with the word stemming search option. This option finds words
that share a stem with a search word. For example, if you search
for “programming,” the Reader will also find “program” and
“programs.” The search indexes were not created using the
Sounds Like and Case Sensitive options. Therefore, you cannot
use these options when searching online books. Finally, numbers
are not included in the search index and will not be found by a
search.

Using Bookmarks
All of the online books contain predefined bookmarks that make
it easy for you to quickly jump to a specific topic. By default, the
bookmarks are displayed to the left of each online book. For

Connect JDBC Installation Guide

Customizing the Online Books 31

more information about using Acrobat Reader, refer to the

online help for the product.

Customizing the Online Books

If you have Adobe Acrobat Exchange 3.0 or higher, you can
customize the online books to reflect information specific to
your work environment. For example:

■ Notes. You can embed notes within an online book to help

identify important procedures or helpful hints specific to
your organization. A note appears in the online books as a
note icon; double-click the icon to view the embedded note
text.

■ Bookmarks. You can also add customized bookmarks to an

online book to help you find topics even faster. Bookmarks
can be used to jump to topics within a book, or to other PDF
files.

For specific instructions on how to customize a book, refer to the

Acrobat documentation.

About Acrobat Reader

34 Chapter 3 Installing and Viewing Online Books

Installing Acrobat Reader

The CD contains Acrobat Reader 4.x. To view the online books,
you must have Acrobat Reader 3.x or later installed on a local or
network location. You cannot start the Reader directly from the
CD. If you already have a copy of the correct version of Acrobat
Reader with Search installed on your machine, you can skip the
procedure documented in this section.

Network Administrators: To allow users to install Acrobat Reader

from a network location, copy the entire \Readers\platform
directory and its contents from the CD into a directory on the
network server.

Windows Platforms
The instructions to install the Reader are the same whether you
install it locally or to the network.

To install Acrobat Reader:

1 Insert the DataDirect CD into the CD-ROM drive. If the
CD-ROM drive is on a network, you must mount the CD and
create a mapping to the CD-ROM drive.

2 Start the Setup program as follows, substituting the

appropriate CD-ROM drive letter if necessary.

From Windows Explorer, navigate to the drive and directory

containing the Reader; then, double-click the self-extracting
program:

drive:\Readers\Windows\rs405eng.exe
3 Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Connect JDBC Installation Guide

Installing Acrobat Reader 35

UNIX Platforms
To install Acrobat Reader on UNIX:
1 Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive.

2 Mount the drive on a local workstation as a file system.

NOTE: To mount a CD-ROM drive, you must know your

system’s root password. If you do not know the password,
contact your system administrator.

The following examples assume that the /cdrom mount point

is available on your UNIX system. If not, replace /cdrom with
a valid mount point.

a Open a UNIX shell.

b Change to the root user and type the root password:

# su - root
Password: root_password
c On Solaris, by default the CD-ROM drive mounts
automatically when you insert the CD. The other UNIX
platforms supported do not automatically mount the CD
by default. If your workstation is not configured to
automatically mount a CD, you must enter the command
for mounting the drive.

• For HP-UX, enter:

# mount -F cdfs -o cdcase device mount_point
where device is the device name assigned to your
CD-ROM drive. The device name can be found using
the HP-UX tool sam.
For example, if the device name for your CD-ROM
drive is /dev/dsk/c0t4d0 and you want to mount it over
the directory /cdrom, you would enter the following
command:
# mount -F cdfs -o cdcase /dev/dsk/c0t4d0 /cdrom

Connect JDBC Installation Guide

36 Chapter 3 Installing and Viewing Online Books

• For IBM-AIX, enter:

# mount -r -v cdrfs /dev/device /cdrom
where device is the device name assigned to your
CD-ROM drive. The device name can be found using
the AIX tool smit.
• For Linux, enter:
# mount -r -t iso9660 /dev/device /mnt/cdrom
where device is the device name assigned to your
CD-ROM drive.
3 Verify that the drive containing the CD is mounted by
entering:

# mount
You should see a list of mounted file systems, including the
CD-ROM drive you just mounted.

4 Copy the appropriate Acrobat Reader compressed file (.Z file)

from the CD to your UNIX machine:

■ For AIX, /readers/Aix/AIXRS.tar.Z

■ For HP-UX, /readers/Hpux/HPUXRS.tar.Z
■ For Linux, /readers/Linux/ILINXR.tar.Z
■ For Solaris, /readers/Solaris/SSOLR.tar.Z

5 Uncompress the file by entering:

uncompress compressed_filename
6 Untar the .tar file that was extracted from the compressed
file:

tar -xvf filename.tar

7 Use the instructions in the Instguid.txt file to complete the
Acrobat Reader installation. This file is one of the files that
was extracted from the .tar file.
