Typographical Conventions
This book uses the following typographical conventions:
Convention Explanation
italics Introduces new terms with which you may not be
familiar, and is used occasionally for emphasis.
bold Emphasizes important information. Also indicates
button, menu, and icon names on which you can act.
For example, click Next.
UPPERCASE Indicates the name of a file. For operating
environments that use case-sensitive file names, the
correct capitalization is used in information specific
to those environments.
Also indicates keys or key combinations that you can
use. For example, press the ENTER key.
monospace Indicates syntax examples, values that you specify, or
results that you receive.
monospaced Indicates names that are placeholders for values that
italics you specify. For example, filename.
Convention Explanation
forward slash / Separates menus and their associated commands. For
example, Select File / Copy means that you should
select Copy from the File menu.
The slash also separates directory levels when
specifying locations under UNIX.
vertical rule | Indicates an "OR" separator used to delineate items.
brackets [ ] Indicates optional items. For example, in the
following statement: SELECT [DISTINCT], DISTINCT is
an optional keyword.
Also indicates sections of the Windows Registry.
braces { } Indicates that you must select one item. For example,
{yes | no} means that you must specify either yes or
no.
ellipsis . . . Indicates that the immediately preceding item can
be repeated any number of times in succession. An
ellipsis following a closing bracket indicates that all
information in that unit can be repeated.

Before you install Connect JDBC, you need to verify that you
have a supported version of the database and that your system
meets certain requirements.
Installer
The installer requires JDK 1.2 or higher.
jXTransformer
JDK 1.3 or higher is required for using jXTransformer. If you want
to use JDBC data sources to connect with the jXTransformer
Builder, you must install the JDBC 2.0 Optional Package and the
Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI) Package.
Supported Databases
Table 1-2 shows the databases supported by each Connect JDBC
driver at the time of the release. For current information, refer to
the Connect JDBC matrix on the DataDirect Technologies Web
site:

Evaluation Installations
The installer allows you to install all of the Connect JDBC drivers
for a 15-day evaluation.
Before you start installation, verify that your system meets the
specified requirements. Refer to Chapter 1, “Before You Install,”
on page 13 for a list of these requirements.
Installation
NOTE: Be sure that the Java Virtual Machine is on your path. The
minimum requirement for installation is JDK version 1.2; JDK 1.4
is required for the drivers to use JDBC 3.0 features.
GUI Installation
1 From the installer directory, execute either installer.bat
(Windows) or installer.sh (UNIX). The Connect JDBC Installer
window appears.
(If you prefer to start the installer from the command line,
enter:
pack
db2
db2OS390
informix
oracle
sqlserver
sybase
Command-Line Installation
1 You must first decide whether you want to install the drivers
in the same directory as the installer (the installer directory),
or in a separate installation directory.
pack
db2
db2OS390
informix
oracle
sqlserver
sybase
-i "/home/users/jdbc drivers/install"
-i "c:\jdbc drivers\install"
For example, to complete evaluation licensing for drivers
located in c:\jdbc drivers\install, you would enter the
following command:
-i "/home/users/jdbc drivers/install"
2 Remove the comment marker from the line for the PATH
variable.
PATH=C:\JDK1_4\bin;%PATH%
■ For UNIX: change "PATH=<uncomment this line and fill in
the path to your JDK installation>;$PATH" to the
installation path for your JDK or JRE. For example,
PATH=/home/user1/JDK1_4/bin;$PATH
4 Save the file and use it to start the jXTransformer Builder.
Uninstalling
To uninstall, delete the entire installation directory.
select File / Print to print the entire file (book), the current page,
or a range of pages.
If you want to keep the books.pdf file open until you choose to
close it, go to the Reader menu bar and select File / Preferences /
General. Clear the check box for the Open Cross-Document Links
in Same Window option.
■ For UNIX, you can start the Reader from the command
line by using its launch script:
D:\Program Files\DataDirect\slodbc51\books\slnk\books.pdf
D:\Program Files\DataDirect\books\odbc\books.pdf
3 Click Open.
While viewing the online books, you can use hypertext links,
perform text searches, and use bookmarks.
Using Bookmarks
All of the online books contain predefined bookmarks that make
it easy for you to quickly jump to a specific topic. By default, the
bookmarks are displayed to the left of each online book. For

platforms supported do not automatically mount the CD
by default. If your workstation is not configured to
automatically mount a CD, you must enter the command
for mounting the drive.
# mount
You should see a list of mounted file systems, including the
CD-ROM drive you just mounted.
