LESSON 1
What’s New
Activity 1
1. Is this how one should write a reaction paper? Why?
-Yes, the reaction paper provided in the question is properly written. Because a
reaction paper includes an individual's personal opinion and reviews on a specific
piece of information
2. What is a GOOD reaction paper?
- A good reaction paper should include a brief summary of the incident as well as
an individual's thoughts and opinions. The reaction paper consists of a brief
summary of the topic. The majority of it should focus on one's opinions and points
of view. We should respond in the same way, including a brief summary of the
incident as well as your reactions and opinions. As a result, a good reaction paper
addresses all of the points raised above.
What’s More
A Reaction paper is a type of paper writing wherein the author expresses oneself
thoughts and feelings as to what is being read or seen. The writer's communication
skills are evaluated first, followed by the unique ideas and the originality of the
paper content.
To write a good reaction paper, you must read the material thoroughly, label
interesting places while reading/watching and write down your thoughts develop a
thesis statement, use your notes to construct a main idea that will be developed in
your subsequent work, compose an outline, and only then begin writing the paper
itself.
When you write your reaction paper, remember these important points: The first
section of your paper should include background information on the author and
the topic. You must write down and highlight the main ideas and points of the
paper. If necessary, use direct quotations. In this section, avoid expressing your
personal opinion. The second section should include your personal thoughts on the
topic. Concentrate on a single issue or address them all and explain your position.
Explain how the material relates to the modern world, society, or individual
people. If necessary, support your statements with sources and draw conclusions
whether you're the author or not.

What I Have Learned

GETTING DEEPER!
Lesson:
Writing the Reaction Paper/ Review / Critique, although they rely on the writer's
opinion, these types of papers, like all types of academic writing, require evidence
in the form of facts, statistics, examples, testimony, reviews of fellow writers,
pictures, and other pieces of evidence to support the writer's claim.
What I want to say about the lesson
Writing such reaction, review and critique paper are critical assessments, analyses,
or evaluations of various works and not simply a summaries. They are advanced
forms of writing that require critical thinking and the ability to recognize
arguments.
Of all the types of academic writing in this lesson, critiques are considered the
most academic.
What I found out
A good review paper can clarify the state of knowledge, explain apparent
contradictions, identify gaps in research, and even generate consensus where none
previously existed. A good review can also help you advance in your career.
Because reviews are frequently cited, they aid in recognition and promotion.
When writing reaction papers, you should describe your overall experience in
relation to an event or reading material. You write not only about the facts, but
also about your reaction to them; you can discuss whether the experience was
positive or negative for you.

What I Can Do

Digital Nation: Life of the Digital Frontier

Years have passed and many things were not the way it used to be. From
the physical books to electronic books that can be downloaded on the internet and
can be read on the gadgets; from the children playing traditional games outside to
children submerged on the screen of their computers, laptops, or cellphone; from
the primitive way of living to a world that’s consumed by technology; many
things had happened as the world evolved. One of the manifestations that the
world experienced drastic changes is the virtual transformation of the world that
people way back was accustomed to. Is technology really moving faster than
expected that we can’t catch up? Is the new formed world—the wired world—
causing us more gain than loss? It can be answered through Digital Nation: Life of
the Digital Frontier
Digital Nation: Life of the Digital Frontier is a documentary film by
Frontline producer, Rachel Dretzin, with a correspondent, Douglas Rushkoff, who
is the one of the leading thinkers and writer of the digital age—during that time. It
is a follow-up to the installment “Growing Up Online” in 2008, which was also by
Dretzin.
The documentary film explores how the digital world or the rising
technology affects the lives of the individuals. It is an in-depth exploration of how
it is to be human in the 21st century digital world. It focused on the effect of the
use of technology to education, personal interactions, multi-tasking, internet
addiction, business practices, advancement in military and even recruitment, and
post-traumatic stress.
With the interviews from different individuals such as professors,
instructors, parents, students, military, and others, the documentary unfolds the
beauty and the drawbacks of the technology that’s colonizing us. They hope to
show to the target audience that the rise of technology is like a coin that has two
sides—the positive and the negative. As I watched the film, I observed that most
of the effects sided on the darker side of the technology—effect on learning,
behavior, addiction, difficulty on distinguishing reality from virtual. If there were
a bright side, it was highlighted for a short time, as the bad effects were greater
during that time.
From Dretzin’s and Rushkoff’s journey to understand the implication of
living in the transformed and the effects on the present and future generations, I
can say that they’re not trying to be biased as they only want to share the stories of
other people. But as I view that film, the darker side was more given emphasis as
it was supported with conducted studies.
As I watched the documentary film, I was shocked with the new
knowledge I learned, I agreed, I frowned, and I was amazed. At first I thought it
wouldn’t be necessary to finish the film as I already know the possible impacts of
technology on the life of an individual, as I, myself, experienced such. I was
wrong. Watching the film made me realize things and made understand how those
individuals comes from. At some point of the filmi frowned as I was perplexed by
the transitions of the events and the overwhelming amount of individuals and their
experiences.
From the 1 hour and 25-minute documentary film, the words of Professor
James Paul Gee are the prominent ones in my mind. He mentioned about the gains
and losses. In order to gain something, we loss things that are also significant. Just
like the birth of technology and the use of it, we loss the way of how we lived
before, and we gain new things that are beneficial not only to the present
generation but to the future. If you were to ask me, is our generation better that the
ones before us, I would say I prefer not to compare. The past has a significant
importance of we have now and it is not comparable. The things done in the past
and know were different things, our world evolved and transitioned. We can’t say
that we did greater than them, instead, we can say that we became better because
of the past.

Additional Activities
After doing the activities:
I noticed
-I've noticed that writing a reaction paper and movie review is tricky and at the
same time challenging.
A question I have is
-Does a critique is purely about whether or not you liked the movie, book, etc...?
I wonder why
-A reaction paper, review and critique generally use the same organization of
ideas.
It seems like
-Writing these are not easy although I have some experienced
I’m not sure
-Why do we need to avoid retelling the whole movie in writing a movie review
I realized
-I needed to learn more about writing a reaction paper and movie review, and I
realized the importance to learn to write them since it can be used to generate
ideas for a research paper.
I discovered
-How essential learning to write these in my life as a student despite its
difficultness and complicatedness.
