ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to inform the consumers through this application on

what healthy food their body needs daily for them to have a healthy lifestyle. It was

developed to make it convenient for people to choose food they would consume. This

study is for the people who want to learn about different food recipes. Conveniently

sorted into categories and accessible via a quick, simple search, the user will login and

verify their personal information. After the registration, they will then be able to browse a

recipe which they can save after creating an account. The admin will manage the recipes

in the application, will verify the email of every consumer, and will be in charge for

backup and recovery. The researchers will evaluate the performance of the Healthy Food

Recipes and Benefits Application by means of IT expertise; these are User Experience,

Compatibility Testing, and Functionality Testing. The researchers used the web as a data

gathering tool with data derived from different studies. This study will help the people

browse for a wide-selection of food, view and save recipes they want, give them a

preview of the benefits of every food they will browse, and provide them a step-by-step

instruction on preparing the food. This study will help every user of the application to

become aware and pay attention to their diet and physical health.

1. INTRODUCTION

Food is part of everyone’s daily life. People are working hard to provide food for

their families, but a lot are not considering eating healthy food and often settles for junk

and fast food. With this, the researchers decided to create a mobile application which will

allow people to see a variety of healthy food with their corresponding benefits when

consumed. Most people today use their mobile devices to order from fast food chains, so

a mobile application that gives them option of what food to prepare and presenting them

its benefits would surely help people change their perspective about their choices on

food.

We have seen an unfathomably large increase in the number of people accessing

the internet globally in recent years. Billions of individuals have achieved thanks to

smartphones. Because more people are using smartphones, there is a huge market

opportunity for mobile applications. These apps are currently being used by people for a

variety of things, including shopping, reserving cinema tickets, daily planning, and

entertainment. People now rely heavily on mobile applications in their daily lives. The

creation of a mobile application has the exceptional ability to reach a wide range of

potential customers and is done for the convenience of the user. and balanced diet that

can provide enough nutritional value for their body. How The nourishing components of

food known as nutrients are necessary for the growth, development, and maintenance of

all bodily processes. If a vitamin is not present, some aspects of function and
consequently human health suffer. The metabolic processes slow down or even cease

when nutrient intake is irregular compared to the nutrient needs determined by cell

activity. ever, there are also people who don’t give much attention to their physical

health.

1.1PROJECT CONTEXT

Health is a state of physical, mental, and emotional well-being felt by persons of

any age in their personal and social life. According to Neacşu, “the right to health, just as

the right to good education, is one of the fundamental rights of any human being”

(Neacşu, 2010). The promotion of healthy lifestyles has been gaining popularity as a tool

for developing public health. Studies indicated that healthy lifestyles enhance lifelong

health, increase the quality of life, and decrease morbidity and mortality (Ebem, 2007).

Lifestyle choices and individuals’ behaviors have the potential to influence health and

improve the quality of life (Lyons & Langille, 2000). During the transition from

childhood to adulthood, adolescents establish patterns of behavior and make lifestyle

choices that affect both their current and future health (Nader et al., 2008; Telama, 2009).

This research protocol aims to examine consumers' attitudes and behaviors toward

sustainable and healthy eating through a multidisciplinary approach that considers fiscal,

marketing, public health, and environmental issues.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought almost everyone with no choice but to stay

at home as part of the safety protocols of the government. As a result, many people relied

on their mobile phones to get food from different food-delivery applications available.
This made the researchers thought of coming up with a mobile application which will

give people ideas on what food to prepare when they are running out of ideas to make

sure they are choosing healthy food options instead of ordering food from big fast-food

chains.

The researchers had proposed and planned this project, after careful observation

and analysis of the problem. As a result, the researchers had thought of a solution to this

problem which led to the development of this mobile application. This application aims

to make consumers have a go to app where they can see a wide selection of food, its

corresponding recipe, and its benefits for them to be guided on their choice for food.

This project sought to provide easily understandable nutritional information and

to support consumers in their efforts to make healthier food choices. To better deliver on

the second of these objectives, it was determined that it might be necessary to rate recipes

and develop a method of rating food recipes that were likely to be healthier. Fundamental

to this requirement was a mechanism for rating foods based on their healthiness, and a

review was undertaken to identify the different methods to achieve this. And to be an

easily accessible application the researchers planned to use Android operating system for

this application because Android is the most used and accessible mobile operating system

in Philippines. The researchers used the internet in gathering the data needed in the

development of this application, with blog post and article as most used gathering tool in

gathering the data we needed and knowing what are the types of healthy recipes. The

researchers are focusing on meat and vegetables recipes with nutrition facts to show the
key nutrients to the users that will impact their health and also to support the dietary

needs.

1.2PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION

Healthy food recipes and benefits application is about helping people make healthier

food choices. It also helps them to maintain a healthy lifestyle by doing what is right for

their body. The purpose is to inform the consumers through this application on what food

their body needs in their daily life to have a healthy lifestyle by providing food recipes

which has a nutrition information that will help the users maintain the needed nutrients for

their body. In this application, the consumers who will benefit from this, are those people

who are proactively seeking for healthy foods that will give their body a nutrient and have a

healthy lifestyle. These consumers will want to maximize their health in order to boost their

immunity and reduce vulnerability to disease and illness. [3]. The researchers got their

reference and data from blogposts and websites available online.

This study will mainly design and develop the Healthy Food Recipes and Benefits

Application and to evaluate the performance of The Healthy Food Recipes and Benefits

Application.

The target consumers of this study are those people who wants to learn a variety

of food recipes and who are looking for healthy recipes with benefits. Moreover, those

who have android devices such as mobile phone and tablets. The researchers aimed to

provide an application with user-friendly features for them to enjoy while learning about

food recipes and its benefits. Additionally, its accessibility would be one of its best

features, giving users a chance to use the app, and access the recipes whether they’re

online or offline. These consumers can utilize the application, can view the ingredients

and recipes posted in the application. Lastly, this application will mostly provide food

recipes which are proven to be containing healthy ingredients and have good benefits for

it to serve its purpose of helping the people make healthier food choice.

The Healthy Food Recipes and Benefits Application system is delimited not to

include direct messaging, comment, diet planner, calorie calculator weight calculator and

activity tracking. The Healthy Food Recipes and Benefits Application is a mobile app.
The user must have an android system to be able to access the system. It can be access by

the use of the devices such as smartphones, and tablets.

2 RELATED LITERATURE

The development of nutrition services applications can help people to take control

of their nutrition and health through better eating. There are a lot of benefits they can get

in nutrition services applications. Users can find all the healthy recipes in this mobile

application. This chapter is about the review of related literature that has relevance to our

topic.

2.1DISCUSSION OF MODEL

The existing mobile applications in the market are mainly related to diet and

nutrition, including the measurement of the energy expenditure, the calories intake, the

calories needed, and a food database.

Mobile health, referred to as mHealth, is defined as ‘mobile computing, medical

sensor, and communications technologies’ that can enhance chronic disease care beyond

the traditional outpatient physician-patient encounter. This includes applications that run

on mobile phones, sensors that track vital signs and health activities, and cloud-based

computing systems. There has been an explosion of medical apps over the last 5 yr. with

more than 13 000 apps on health care topics alone available to Apple iPhone users and

over 6000 medical apps available to Android users. Close to one in five individuals with

a smartphone have downloaded a health app resulting in 44 million health app downloads

in 2012 and it is predicted that there will be 142 million downloads by 2016.
This study will contribute to understanding children's perceptions of food choices

and the influence of these perceptions on healthy eating. Research on the promotion of

healthy eating among children by influencing attitudes and behaviors, stresses the need to

encourage repeated exposure to a wide variety of foods and to address children's self-

efficacy for choosing healthier foods. Studying healthy eating among children from their

own perspectives has become increasingly important, not only to inform effective

interventions to reduce childhood overweight and obesity, but also to influence children's

understanding of what, when, and how much to eat. In addition, a life-course approach

that examines dietary exposures across different phases of child development is essential

for nutrition-related population health research.

To achieve this goal, the development of a mobile application for Android devices

is proposed. The development of this type of mobile application is related to the Ambient

Assisted Living (AAL) subject, assisting, and motivating young people to adopt healthy

diet habits and promote physical activity. [5] The development of smartphones has led to

a proliferation of smartphone software applications (“apps”), which are programs able to

run on these mobile devices. From a public health perspective, smartphone apps can

potentially enhance the delivery of health behavior change interventions to individuals

end masse and result in favorable cost-utility.

Despite this, researchers to date have largely developed apps to intervene in the

clinical care setting for patient self-management, whereby a patient monitors themselves

and receives therapeutic feedback, or for real-time therapy where no self-reported data is

required from the patient. The commercial sector has developed numerous apps for
weight loss that include information on nutrition and physical activity, although the

majority are based on calorie counting approaches and may not always reflect best

practice guidelines for weight management. [6] This project sought both to provide easily

understandable nutritional information and to support consumers in their efforts to make

healthier food choices. To better deliver on the second of these objectives, it was

determined that it might be necessary to rate products and develop a method of rating

food recipes that were likely to be healthier. Fundamental to this requirement was a

mechanism for rating foods based on their healthiness, and a review was undertaken to

identify the different methods to achieve this. Once again, a series of criteria were

considered in making the choice and these were based primarily on the quality of the

supportive evidence, the likely acceptance of the method by the nutrition community,

current methods being used around the world, and congruence with local Australian

standards and recommendations [7].

Mobile health (mHealth) tools are also particularly suitable when it comes to

supporting parental involvement in childhood weight management interventions, where

there is growing consensus among researchers and practitioners that novel approaches

using the internet and mHealth apps should be explored. For example, their zero-

geography feature means that access to apps is not restricted to locations and can be

delivered directly to families in the comfort and privacy of their own homes. This is

especially advantageous for a parent population that reports lack of time, scheduling

conflicts, and location difficulties as major barriers to attending childhood weight

management programs.
The transition to college or university is an important period for young people,

who are often facing their first opportunity to make their own food decisions. Young

adults can make choices that will have a negative or positive impact on their eating

behaviors. Obesity is a very serious problem in the United States, and college students are

no exception to the issues of health and healthy food choices that may be offered by the

foodservice industry. Therefore, we need to find useful information about healthy foods

and classify the characteristics of healthy foods especially for young adults such as

college students. [8]. Through the years the food insecure households have developed

among themselves various strategies or measures to cope up with food crises. However, it

is not clear whether household food security strategies and coping mechanisms will also

lead to better nutrition of vulnerable groups. It is on this question that a study on the

linkages between food and nutrition security of households in rural and coastal villages

was conducted. [9]. Food recipes are judged based on the taste and the ingredients of the

dish. The system developed in this project treats the ingredients as the primary source for

recommending a recipe to a user. If a user searches for chicken, the system will display

the recipes of chicken along with some recommendations. [10].

The researchers conducted a review of several applications to see all the features

they have. The researchers got seven categories in all applications upon comparing all the

applications to see what features they have or don’t have. After comparing, it turned out

that one application has a login feature, four applications have nutrition information, two

of those show a level of difficulty in preparing the food, all six applications have a

cooking method, four of those have a cooking time, five applications have a bookmark,

and two applications have a rating. All these observations helped the researchers in

coming up of an application with amazing features.

2.2Conceptual Framework
Researchers believe that a person’s healthy lifestyle can be improved based on

using an application that is easy to use and understand. To do this, we will depend on the

processes and concepts that will be used to enable this method. The researchers have

proposed a system application that would provide for the immediate use to look for

healthy food recipes focusing on distributing quality needs of a user where it can be

controlled.

Figure 1. Conceptual Framework of the Healthy Foods Recipes and Benefits Application

The researchers have observed the benefits of healthy food and recipes by

researching and brainstorming so that a list of food recipes will be categorized. As an

improvement, they managed to search all the healthy food recipes for the design of the

system so that all the healthy foods can be gathered. To support the system proposal, we

have gathered and researched for a few related literatures about system. It is fundamental

to know the strength and weaknesses of the system for it to be improved. The design and
implementation needed a process in defining the architecture of the system proposed to

be developed. The researchers used Rapid Application Development for the methodology

to emphasize the use of our proposal and the user feedback over strict planning and

requirements recording.

The plan to be developed is a solution for every user that is limited in resources.

The researchers designed the system application to be used by other users that are limited

on internet service or mobile data services. It is a solution for immediate research of food

benefits without the hassle of thinking about the internet. It is also functional for low-end

devices.

One of the targets of this proposal is to improve choosing of food to be consumed

by an individual. It can improve an individual’s healthy lifestyle. It is highly

recommended for those who wish to have a healthy diet as they will be provided here

with food recipes which is guaranteed to be healthy when consumed. This system will

benefit all, including health-conscious people, and can be a starter tool for a person who

plans to have a healthier lifestyle, which begins with his or her food choices.
3 TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

In this chapter, the researchers will be discussing the technical background of

software requirements and hardware specifications that is needed for the development of

the proposed application and the sources that were gathered for developing and testing of

the application.

4 METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the methods in data gathering, requirements analysis and

documentation, the source of data, the target user and the tools used in developing the

Healthy Food Recipes and Benefits Application.

4.1Methods in Data Gathering

The following are the methods used by researchers in gathering data:

4.1.1 Internet Method

Internet research is the methodical search for useful information on a specific

topic or issue. The purpose of a systematic study, investigation, or whatever else is to

answer the researcher's question.

The researchers made use of the internet as a data gathering tool to support the

ideas of this study. The researchers have gathered sufficient references and related studies

to form the backbone of our study and to use all the necessary information needed in the

development of this mobile application.

4.1.2 Observation Method

The researchers have observed that people are knowledgeable enough about

food industry. The researchers have observed some food stalls so we can gather data for

our study. Moreover, food blogs and vlog had helped us a lot on listing down the benefits

of a healthy food for our future consumers.

4.2.3 System Development Methodology

The Rapid Application Development is the software development process that the

researchers will use. Rapid Application Development (RAD) is a development

methodology that emphasizes rapid prototyping and feedback over lengthy development

and testing cycles. Rapid application development allows developers to make several

iterations and modifications to software without having to restart the development

process from the beginning each time. The developers can make quick changes during the

development process, allowing them more flexibility and agility. The researchers identify

the purpose and what is required or expected in the system development during the initial

phase of development, known as requirements planning. The researchers guarantee that

the requirements are met to meet the goals in the second phase, which is user design. The

third step is the building phase, during which the researchers began developing and

testing the system.

accessible, easy to understand and to utilize. In terms of its compatibility, the system is

very stable with the android devices we tested. Lastly in terms of its functionality, the

system is working properly and it has a complete and clear information.

6.2 Recommendations

The people who struggles to have a healthy lifestyle are encouraged to use the

application. They are encouraged to search a recipe which gives a nutrition to their body

and will help them to have a healthy lifestyle. In the advent of technologies this

application will give them the ability to keep track of their food choices and maintain a

healthy lifestyle.

1. Future researchers may consider conducting similar studies with additional

variables such as recipes that includes vegetables and their benefits and having teenager

as participants. Having participants from different place around Region 3 and with much

wider population.

2. For upgrading of the system, the future researchers can add more food recipes

to make the selection wider.

3. The future researchers can also include other multimedia such as videos to

demonstrate the process of preparing every food that is in the application.

4. The researchers can also include a section where users can comment to get

their feedback. Lastly, since this mobile application is only accessible for Android users,

the future researchers can also include the possibility of the app being available as well

on iOS devices such as the iPhone.
