Occasion of Vijay Diwas (India)

Vijay Diwas is celebrated on the 16th of December every year to “pay homage to the
martyrs and commemorate the extreme sacrifice made by the Indian Armed Forces in
various operations” (Ministry of Defence, Government of India). It was on this day in
1971 that the Pakistan Army in the then East Bengal surrendered to Lt. Gen. J. S.
Aurora, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command of the Indian
Army.
