5/24 Journal

This morning we learned more aspects of excel. In particular, we learned how to create a
treemap chart, a pivottable, and a pivotchart. When given a set of data, we also learned how to add
conditional formatting to the data spreadsheet, so that we will know which data needs further
investigation. The treemap chart is one of the infinite means for representing data. A treemap chart is
defined as an excel data visualization tool that arranges data in a hierarchy so the largest and smallest
components of a dataset can be easily identified. Next, the pivottable is defined as an excel analytics
tool that can group and aggregate date to show the data comparisons and trends. Data can also be
sorted, and specific data points can be studied by applying filters. Another means of representing data is
the pivotchart which can be used instead of a pivottable. A pivotchart is an excel analytics tool that uses
the same data processing features as a PivotTable. It can display trends and comparisons in any of the
chart types that are available in excel. In order to be able to view the column and row heading when
scrolling through data in an excel spreadsheet, we learned how to freeze panes. There are three options
to freeze panes in an excel workbook: 1) keep the columns and rows visible while the rest of the
worksheet scrolls, 2) freeze the top, or 3) freeze first column. While working in excel this morning we
learned some of the infinite basic statistics functions of average, count, max, and min. We also learned
when and how to incorporate the if function.
