First Voyage Around the World

On 10 August 1519, five ships departed from Seville for what was to become the first
circumnavigation of the globe. Linked by fame to the name of its captain, Magellan, much of the
expedition is known through the travelogue of one of the few crew members who returned to
Spain, Antonio Pigafetta. A narrative and cartographic record of the journey (including 23 hand-
drawn watercolour charts) from Patagonia to Indonesia, from the Philippines to the Cape of
Good Hope, Pigafetta's The First Voyage around the World is a classic of discovery and
exploration literature.

Content Analysis
The content of this book is about Magellan and his men's expidition. It is from the
travelogue of Antonio Pigafetta. It talks about of the discovery of few places including the
Philippines. It also contains some events that happened when Magellan and his men arrived in
what Antonio Pigafetta called the Landrones Island or "Islands of the Thieves". Maybe the
highlight of this events is when Magellan had a fight or some sort of war against a chief named
Silalapulapu (Lapulapu) and how he died in that battle.

Contextual Analysis
Timely
It is timely because it happened when no other group of people are courageous enough to
have an expidition or to travel around the world. So, it just supports the content that it
discovered many places, islands, and courses.

Importance of it in the present

It is very important in the present especially for us as Pilipinos because it shows what was it
like in the Philippines before. We can know that Philippines before is not a united group of
islands. It has different leader or what they called "chiefs". Through this account, it gives us clear
understanding as Pilipinos of what really happened when Magellan got here in this islands, of
how ge really died and how they had a battle with Lapulapu and his people.
