to ship specific requirements.

management (collection, separation, processing, storage and disposal) of shipboard generated waste.

Annex V of the MARPOL Treaty is an International Law providing for a cleaner, safer marine environment. Under this law it is

illegal for any vessel to dump plastic garbage anywhere in the ocean or navigable waters. Violations of these requirements may
result in civil penalties being imposed upon offenders in the form of fines and/or imprisonment, as determined by current

national legislation. In some countries the fine can be as much as $ 25,000 for a small violation of Category 1 (plastics)

possible all boxes should be opened inside the vessel superstructure to prevent accidental release.

them of the specific requirements and procedures relating to garbage management on board the vessel including collection, processing, storage and
disposal. The training programmes and practical operation of this plan shall be reviewed at each monthly management meeting. If it is found that the

plan is not operating as intended then additional training and education shall be carried out involving the entire ships complement.

The Garbage Management Personnel’s attention is drawn to the special rules on incineration that may exist in some special areas. Incineration

materials (e.g. scraped paint, impregnated wood) and certain types of plastics (e.g. PVC-based plastics). Batteries, expired medicine, Aerosol

Comminuters - When operating inside a special area, all food wastes must be comminuted or ground prior to discharge in to the sea. All

discharges are to be as far as practicable and not less than 12 nautical miles from the nearest land or ice-shelf. Outside special areas, ships operating
primarily beyond three nautical miles from the nearest land are encouraged to install and use comminuters to grind food wastes to a particle size

capable of passing through a screen with openings no larger than 25 millimeters. Such a process is recommended even beyond 12 nautical miles

because the particle size hastens assimilation into the marine environment.

only be loaded under the supervision of the Garbage Management Personnel , in all cases other than galley generated food waste. It is not permitted

for individual crew members to empty their individual collection receptacles into the storage receptacles in an unsupervised way.

1.3.6 All collected garbage shall be properly separated into the different containers as defined in Table 1 during the storage process. A special check
shall be made at this stage that plastics are properly separated from all other garbage including even small pieces such as plastic cigarette packet
wrappers and internal packaging.

1.4 Disposal of Garbage

without the authority of the Garbage Management Personnel.

All disposal of garbage must be done in a manner consistent with MARPOL 73/78 regulations summarised in Table 1. The description of

and signed for on the date of the discharge or incineration by the officer in charge. Each completed page of the Garbage Record Book shall be signed

an official language of the State whose flag the ship is entitled to fly, these entries shall prevail in case of a dispute or discrepancy.
