Date 16th September, 2022.

Class SS 3A&B

Time 9:00am – 9:30 & 11:00 – 11:30am.

Subject Chemistry.

Unit topic Metals and their compound

Lesson topic Occurrences of metals and reactions

Specific At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to;
Objective
i. State the occurrences of metals.
ii. Describe the activity series.
iii. Explain the reaction of metals with air.
iv. Describe the reaction of metals and water.

Instructional Metals, trough, water, litmus paper, spatula, modern periodic table.
Resources

Step 1 Identification of prior ideas.

Mode Individual.

Teacher’s role The teacher asks the students to;

(i) Mention where we can obtain a metal.

(ii) Describe those metals that are naturally free in nature.
(iii) Describe the activity series of elements or metals.

Students role The students answered the teacher orally.

Step 2 Exploration.

Mode Individual.

Teacher’s role The teacher guides the students and gave them sodium metal, distilled water and trough and asked them
to;

(i) Fill the distilled water into a trough.

(ii) Cut a spatula\ small piece of sodium metal into the water.
(iii) Describe the observations and record it.

Students role The students answered by carrying out the experiments.

Step 3 Discussion.
Mode Entire class.

Teacher’s role The teacher guides the students to;

(i) State the occurrences of metal - Some metals like Gold and Silver, platinum are found free
in nature while others are found in combined state e.g. Sodium Chloride e.t.c. NaCl can be
obtained in sea salt or rock salt.
(ii) Describes the activity series of metals- are those elements that are metal which are
arranged according to their reactivity e.g. potassium is more reactive than Sodium and
sodium is more reactive than calcium.
(iii) Describe the reaction of metals with air- Most metals forms oxide with oxygen or air,
sodium form oxide in the air, magnesium will form magnesium oxide, calcium oxide e.t.c.
(iv) Explain the reaction of metals and water- is a very violent reaction between the most
reactive metals like sodium and potassium, while the most moderate reactive metals are
not vigorously and the least reactive metals may not react with water or reacts very slow..

Students role The students participates as the teacher explains

Step 4 Application.

Mode Individual.

Teacher’s role The teacher guides the students to write down the following

i. The reaction of metals and air

a. 2Na(s) +O2 (g) Na2O(s).
b. Mg (s) + O2 (g) MgO(s).
ii. . Write down the equation between metals and water.
a. Na2O(s) + H2O (l) 2NaOH (aq) + H2 (g).
b. CaO(s) + H2O (l) Ca (OH) 2(aq).
iii. Draws the activity series.
a. Potassium, Sodium Alkali metals.
b. Calcium, Magnesium Alkali earth metals.
c. Mercury, Silver, Gold Noble gas.
d. Tin, Iron, Zinc Heavy metals except Hydrogen.

Students role The students write as the teacher explains.

Step 5 Evaluation.

Mode Individual.

Teacher’s role The teacher guides the students to answer the following questions;

(i) State the occurrences of metals.

(ii) Describe the activity series.
(iii) Explain the reaction of metals with air.
(iv) Describe the reaction of metals and water.
Students role The students did as the teacher instructed.

Assignment i. State the principles used in the extraction of metals.

ii. Explain the treatment of ores before extraction.
