LESSON 5

Elements
of a Computer
System
OBJECTIVES

After successful completion of this module, the student can be

able to:
⮚Describe how the computer works;
⮚Identify the different components of the computer that enable
it to perform its task;
⮚Discuss the different computer components;
⮚Understand the difference between application software and
system software; and
⮚Explain the role of people/human in the existence of
computer.
How computer
units are being
formed?
Computer units are being formed by the
powerful combination of hardware and
software which initially requires
compatibility before being merged.
However, the computer will not work
without the interaction coming from the
so-called peopleware.
Elements of a Computer System:

• Hardware
• Software
• Peopleware
Hardware is consists of all
the tangible parts and
physical components of a
computer.
Types of hardware devices:

• Input Device
• Output Device
• Input/output Device
An input device is any
hardware device that sends
data to a computer,
allowing you to interact with
and control it.
The keyboard and mouse
are the most commonly
used or primary input
devices on a computer.
An output device is a piece of
computer hardware that receives
data from a computer and then
translates that data into another
form. That form may be audio,
visual, textual, or hard copy such as
a printed document.
Examples of output devices:
• Monitor
• Printer
• Headphones
• Computer Speakers
Some devices, however, can do
both. These devices are called
input/output (I/O) devices.
Examples of input/output devices:
• Flash drive
• Printer w/ scanner
• Headset
Software is defined as
programs that run, manage
and operate the entire
computer system.
Types of software:

• Application Software
• System Software
Application Software is
program that has been
developed to perform specific
task, to solve a particular
problem or simply give
entertainment.
System Software is the main
reason why application software
can interact with the computer.
Types of System software:

• Operating System
• Utility Programs
• Language Translators
Operating System manage the
computer's resources, such as the
CPU, memory, hardware
components and etc.; establish a
user interface; and execute and
provide services for applications
software.
Utility Programs helps users
configure, analyze, optimize and
maintain a computer. They are
usually accessed through the
computer's control panel, control
center, settings or system
preferences.
Language Translator is a computer
program that translates program
written in a given programming
language into a functionally
equivalent program in a different
language.
Peopleware is considered
as a computer component
and its role as the
commander to make the
computer works.
Peopleware includes the following
but not limited to:
Technical Support IT Security
Programmers Network Engineer
Web Developers Database Administrators
Computer System Analyst
Technical Support mostly people
working in any business outsourcing
company to be technical support
staff that assist and resolve
hardware and software issues.
Programmers. Computer
Programmers are the brains behind
software functions –they write and
test the code that makes up software
programs.
Web Developers. They’re the ones
who are responsible for building
websites and the infrastructures
behind them.
Computer Systems Analyst are
the multitaskers of information
technology; they have to understand
computer hardware, software, and
networks – and how they all come to
work together.
IT Security are in charge of keeping
organizations safe from malicious
attacks.
Network Engineer are in charge of
setting up, administering, and
maintaining and upgrading local and
wide area networks for an
organization.
Database Administrators. These
people administer, manage and
maintain the integrity of data that
comes into the database.
